Vehicle Detail

Overall 1972 Javelin Background History The 1972 model year Javelins featured a new "egg crate" front grille design with a similar pattern repeated on the chrome overlay over the full-width taillights. The AMX version continued with the flush grille. A total of 15 exterior colors were offered with optional side stripes. To consolidate the product offering, reduce production costs, and offer more value to consumers, the 1972 AMC Javelins came with more standard comfort and convenience items. Engine power ratings were downgraded to the more accurate Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) net hp figures. Automatic transmissions were now the TorqueFlite units sourced from Chrysler, called "Torque-Command" by AMC. American Motors achieved record sales in 1972 by focusing on quality and including an innovative Buyer Protection Plan to back its products. This was the first time an automaker promised to repair anything wrong with the car (except for tires) for one year or 12,000 miles. Owners were provided with a toll-free telephone to AMC, as well as a free loaner car if a repair to their car took overnight. The Javelins competed successfully in Trans Am racing and won the series with AMC sponsorship in 1971, 1972, and independently in 1975. The pony car market segment continued to decline in popularity. One commentator has said that “despite the Javelin's great lines and commendable road performance, it never quite matched the competition in the sales arena ... primarily because the small independent auto maker did not have the reputation and/or clout to compete with GM, Ford, and Chrysler.” This 1972 AMC Javelin SST Background History I purchased this vehicle recently because my Father had a 1974 Javelin when I was a child and I really wanted one (Bucket list type thing) but then two weeks ago I was hospitalized and now have a huge medical bill that needs to be paid. This car will hopefully be able to help me with this hospital bill. This car was purchased from an individual in the State of Washington; (Still titled in Washington but signed off and ready to be transferred) he purchased it from a person in California where it spent most of its life. I do know it has been sitting in a garage for a few years, driven regularly to keep fluids ok etc… I really do not know much other history about the vehicle other than to say the owners who have owned it in the past must have really cared for the car as it is in extremely nice condition for its age. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw the photos, the color combo with the interior is stunning to me. It really is a beautiful car. Mechanicals This 1972 Javelin came with the option 360 V8 engine, I have no history on the car like I stated earlier but the motor has been painted so I don’t know if it was just cleaned up and painted or if it was rebuilt at that time as well? It starts right up and runs well, seems to have an exhaust leak as you hear it when driving while inside the car but not when it is running and you are outside the car? The 2 barrel carb looks to be original as it has a AMC logo on a little tab installed on it. The mileage on the odometer shows 88,000 miles I cannot state that it is that but from looking at the car it is my opinion. But like I stated I cannot say for a fact it is the original miles. The transmission is the optional center console mounted automatic. I am assuming it is the original tranny as well. It has fluids in it and seems to function properly. But like I said I cannot promise that as I do not know the history of the car. All lights work and everything seems to be in fine working order. The car drives and stops well; it has not leaked anything on my garage floor that I have noticed so far. Seems to be a nice original running and driving 1972 Javelin! Body This car is basically rust and filler free as far as I can tell. It is the main reason why you should purchase this vehicle above others. It is amazing how clean this car is and if at all possible you should come see in person before auction ends (or send an inspector) as it is that extremely solid. You will not be disappointed. It does have one issue on the rear quarter panel (See pics) where looks like someone backed into something and it was that way when I purchased the vehicle, seems like the bumper is simply pushed in slightly and not bent at all. The quarter panel can be fixed easily. At the bottom of the rear window the paint is lifting, (See pics) there is no rust inside the trunk below/underneath this area, (I tried to take photos to prove this point but they don’t show up well) it truly seems to be that water can simply sit there so it lifted the paint after a while? (I would bet it is a common issue as it is an odd design). Again I feel it is an easy fix. The trunk has no issues and is amazingly clean. The vinyl roof is in excellent shape as is all of the chrome and trim pieces on this car, it is like a time capsule. Yes the trim tag is still on door as well as another sticker that was applied at the factory (?). Paint To make this car look very nice it should be re-painted. It has the dent on the rear quarter panel and the paint is thin in places. It has been repainted once in its life and seems to have been a fairly cheap job as the original paint shows up in numerous places. You may be able to notice it on passenger side rear quarter panel? Or on roof? It was not prepped at all, simply painted right over original paint. The door jams and such are all the original paint. Interior It sure all seems to me to be the original interior? I cannot promise anything as like I stated earlier I do not know the history of the car but it all matches up beautiful. The plastic is all in very nice shape, seats are amazing, and carpet is in good shape. There is a missing plastic piece the goes across the car, inside, below the rear window but above the package tray. (I have seen them listed for sale for $40.00 on ebay) I did buy the package tray so that is new but that’s the only thing I did to the whole car besides for clean it up a bit. MISSING ITEMS It needs an antenna The radio does not work but it is the original AM radio Plastic piece noted in interior section Overall Again I cannot stress enough how basically rust free this car is and I really recommend anyone to come see the car in person if at all possible. With the vehicle in its present state I would recommend a paint job but it definitely could just be driven the way it is right now and enjoyed for many years. If you would like to see any other photos please ask and I will try to get them for you. TERMS: This auction is in U.S. dollars. Bidders are welcome to inspect the vehicle anytime during auction.
