1965 MG "B" 1965 MGB Convertible - Original California Car Primrose Yellow / Factory Wire Wheels / Striking Tan Interior 2 Previous Owners' - Excellent Repair History & Records _________________________________________________ NOTE: Our listings sometimes get rather lengthy. However, we continually hear from out of state / out of country buyers (many of our clients) that they prefer the level of detail that we provide. However, if you are not prepared to read multiple pages of description, we ask that you review the "Specifications" on the car along with viewing the photos. Also, if you'd prefer, please call us at 925-846-1451 and we'll gladly discuss the MGB and answer any questions over the telephone, including about our Buy it Now policies. Yes, the MGB can be purchased prior to the end of the eBay auction. Again, please give us a call for details. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: EACH TIME WE LIST A VEHICLE ON EBAY WE RECEIVE COMMENTS THAT THERE ARE NO PHOTOS OF THE INTERIOR, ENGINE, UNDERCARRIAGE, ETC. OF THE CAR. THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER OF PHOTOS, BUT WHEN YOU REACH WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE LAST PHOTO, YOU WILL NEED TO SCROLL TO VIEW THE REMAINING PHOTOS. IF YOU ARE STILL UNABLE TO SEE THE PHOTOGRAPHS, PLEASE CALL US AND WE WILL PROVIDE A LINK FOR THE PHOTOS (IT IS A VIOLATION OF EBAY POLICY TO LIST THE URL ON THE EBAY LISTING). All of our photos are taken in natural light and we do not "Photo-Shop" or touch-up the photos in any way. This is a really pretty original California "B" and the photos accurately reflect the condition of this spectacular & desirable early "pull handle" MGB. The "madness" is underway in the various auction venues around the country. We often times see a wide range of collectible cars / special interest cars sell for inflated amounts in the "heat of the moment." This car is offered at a VERY realistic price and, unlike bidding on cars in an auction environment, you will have the benefit of extensive information & history on the car prior to making a buying decision. Equally as important is the fact that Classic Cars Ltd. has been in business for 18+ years and enjoys an excellent national / international relationship with 600~ positive eBay feedback items. We can provide references in addition to those left by customers at Yahoo Reviews, Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA. (Please enter this information in Google to read our reviews) THANK YOU! CLASSIC CARS LTD. 925-846-1451 _________________________________________________ HISTORY OF THE MGB When the MGB was introduced in 1962, it was a two-seat open roadster with squared-off styling which was in the Midget mould, and was to endure. It had a pancake-style rear hinged bonnet, full width grille, scalloped recesses for the headlamps in the tops of the front wings, a separate boot with a hinged lid, and canted rear lights in the ends of the rear fenders. The windshield was a curved item, there was a removable soft-top, and the doors had roll up windows with hinged vent windows. The MGB was actually a bit shorter than the MGA, but the design was such that MG had managed to make the cockpit roomier that allowed larger, more comfortable seats to be added. In the passenger compartment, the driver and passenger had bucket seats, and full instrumentation was provided. A year later in 1963, among the options offered for the MGB were an overdrive for the transmission, center hub mounted wire wheels, and a folding soft-top that could be stowed behind the seats. And in 1964 a much stronger bottom-end for the engine, derived from the BMC 1800, was fitted. In the tradition of the earlier MG sports cars, the MGA had been built with a separate chassis to provide support and strength to the car, and to carry all the mechanical components and the body. By the end of the 1950's however, methods of car construction had moved on, and the days of the separate chassis were almost over. Unitary construction was now the name of the game, whereby a cleverly designed body shell constructed from a number of metal panels with a reinforced floor pan, provided mountings for all the mechanical components and absorbed all the loads from the suspension etc. The advantage of this type of construction was that it produced a much lighter car, which has obvious performance benefits for a sports car. Hence, the MGB was to be built of unitary construction. At the front, the inner wing panels, front panel, and engine compartment bulkhead formed one box; the scuttle, bulkhead, and front floor formed another; while the rear inner wings, boot floor, and rear panels formed another. Box section strengthening pieces were added to the floor to stiffen it and provide mountings for the rear suspension, while additional box sections ran along the bottoms of the front inner wings for the engine and suspension mountings. The front suspension and steering were much like the MGA, although there were minor differences. At the rear were the familiar semi-elliptic springs controlled by lever-arm dampers. The engine and transmission were also MGA sourced, but again in an improved state. Many sports car enthusiasts believe that MGB's epitomize the classic British sports car. By the mid-1960's the MGB had very nice performance, handling and was comfortable for longer journey's (unlike the earlier MGTD's, "TC'S", etc). Also, these cars are not only great fun to drive and economical to operate, they get great mileage. The MGB represents fuel efficient solution to a fun, affordable and practical and sports car. Listed below are additional details on this 1965 MGB along with extensive photographs of the cars exterior, interior and engine bay that support the MGB's lack of rust in the floors, rocker panels, etc. This MGB has had the benefit of very recent mechanical service and it runs and drives extremely well. Frankly, the significant investment in ongoing servicing and maintenance of the car shows and makes the car a reliable, fun to drive and striking example of an early MGB. ABOUT THIS 1965 MGB CONVERTIBLE We have personally owned a number of MGB's and, frankly, we really enjoy these cars in both convertible and coupe forms (the MGB GT). The cars represent a tremendous value, and are not only great fun to drive but truly epitomize the British sports car experience. Personally, we prefer the "topless" version of the MGB that is sought after by true MG enthusiasts. Additionally, many "hard core" MGB fans will consider nothing but the early chrome bumper cars with steel dash boards, wire wheels and "pull" door handles as are found on this 1965 MGB. What makes this particular MGB so very unique (and appealing) is a variety of factors. Consider the desirability of the combination of equipment on this early MGB: We purchased this MG from the original owner in 2004, sold the car to its second owner, and now, we're proud to have it back in our showroom for sale once again! * Original, one owner car for 39 years (all but the previous 5~ years) * Original California car * Finished in a lovely shade of Primrose yellow with tan interior * Beautiful color combination * Replacement carpet in great condition * New convertible top converted to later model "Frame attached" style * Factory original top bows * Beautiful 3-spoke steering wheel with functional horn (and center MG logo) * 4-Speed gearbox * Factory wire wheels in excellent condition * Roll Bar for added safety * Period style chrome latch lap belts for safety * Includes the "Driver's Handbook" / Owner's Manual * Haynes Repair Manual * Excellent mechanical service history / documentation within the previous 5~ years with a substantial amount invested to make the car an excellent, reliable example of an MGB (For details refer to "Mechanical Condition") THIS PARTIUCULAR MGB - HISTORY While this MGB is titled as a 1965, the various "Data Plates" are as follows: Car # GHN3L / 46346 & Engine # 18GA-U-H-15580 Based on data from the North American MGB Register, the car VIN # decodes as follows: GHN3L / 46346 G = MG H = Engine Type N = Body Type (2 Seat Tourer / convertible) 3 = Series Number (3rd Series) L = Drive (Right or Left) - Left in this case 46346 Car Production Number We originally acquired this lovely MGB form the cars original owner in 2004. He chose to sell the car at that time due to his relocation to "Snow Country" and concern about the weather having a negative effect on the cars condition. We then sold the MGB to a very particular owner who, after 5 years, asked if we had an interest in owning the "B" once again. The answer was a resounding YES! At the time of our purchase of the MGB in 2004 sales receipts reflects a total mileage on the car of 111,284. When we met with the car's owner (our previous owner), we were pleased to learn that the car had been exceptionally well maintained and was in even better mechanical condition than when we sold the car having received a number of recent improvements and upgrades. Since that time the cars most recent, "mature" owner (a very young "80 something"), and avid, long term sports car fan only added a few thousand miles to the car. Specifically, the car now reads 113,330. And, during the entire time the odometer / speedometer have been fully functional reporting an accurate accumulation of miles. Understandably, the owner has decided that his sports car days are behind him and he has decided to pass the car onto to a new "caregiver." The MGB has remained in dry Southern California, garaged at all times and on a battery tender. It was inspected regularly and ALL necessary maintenance was performed. Within the previous 100 miles the car was inspected by an independent repair facility and passed the required California safety inspection. ENGINE & MECHANICAL COMPONENTS During his ownership of the car, Mr. M. completed some significant upgrades and maintenance on the MGB bringing it to an even higher level that when he first received the car a few years ago. Specifically, some of the items that he completed include: ? Upgraded Weber 2bbl carburetor for improved performance & reliability ($600.00+) ? Conversion to 12 Volt negative ground and GM single wire alternator ? New 12 Volt engine mounted AGM dry battery ? New electric distributor ? New radiator with over flow tank ? Electric radiator fan ? Electric windshield washer pump ? Grote side mirrors on doors added ? New windshield ? Spin on oil adapter / filter ? 14 inch MGB racing steering wheel ? Pioneer stereo / CD radio ? Fold down top instead of original stowaway top ? Electric voltmeter and water temperature gauges (Very nicely installed in center console panel) Prior to the previous owner (our customer), the MGB was owned for close to 40 years by a very particular owner / driver. It is this individual that was responsible for the cars restoration 8-10 years ago including new paint, interior, mechanical rebuild and complete "freshening up." The prior repair history on the car is also impressive. A summary is as follows: Within 2,500 miles, the following work / upgrades were completed: ? Compression check with the following results: Cyl # 1: 165 lbs, Cyl # 2 165 lbs, Cyl # 3 155 lbs, Cyl # 4 165 lbs Note: These cylinder compression results support the engine rebuilt when the car was restored by the previous (original) owner. ? Fuel adjustments, new fuel filter ? Valve adjustment, new valve cover gasket & complete tune-up (New plugs, rotor, points, throttle return spring, etc.) ? New plug wires ? Adjust timing and check advance ? New distributor ? Major Service / tune-up A (oil &filter & gaskets), fuel filters, air filters ? Rebuild PCV valve ? Replace oil pressure / water temperature combination gauge ? Extensive Brake work including: ? New brakes ? All new brake hoses ? New brake master cylinder ? New front & rear brake hoses ? New brake fluid ? Bleed brakes ? Replace steering rack pinion seal to eliminate leaking ? R&R U-joints ? New clutch Master cylinder ? New clutch hose ? New clutch slave cylinder ? Replace rear differential seal ? Replace transmission seal to ensure no leaking ? Repair spare tire (install tube) There is additional work that was completed but invoices could not be located. However, the above volume of work demonstrates the level of care that the car received and clearly supports the owner's concern about it being in top condition. COSMETIC CONDITION - SUMMARY HIGHLIGHTS - BODY / INTERIOR / TOP ? Finished in a lovely shade of Primrose yellow ? Unique & beautiful tan interior ? Fantastic, desirable metal dash, early MGB ? New 3-spoke leather steering wheel ? New complete carpet (front & rear) ? Replacement door panels ? Roll bar added for safety ? Recently added (new) sunvisors ? New interior mirror ? New wiper blades ? New tool kit bag ? Newly installed Pioneer TSX150 speaker enclosures (mounted behind seats) ? New Pioneer AM/FM CD radio EXTERIOR The MGB received a total re-paint when it was restored years ago (including the front and back door jambs, door sill, and area behind the front seats that covers the battery). The paint is high gloss, and while not show quality, it has a very attractive appearance and there is no indication that there has been any partial re-painting since the car was restored / re-painted. There is no fading but the paint and body show the characteristic minor imperfections of a sports car that has been used and enjoyed. However, most of the flaws are minor and, as a result, do not show in the photographs. Additionally, they do not way detract from the MGB's overall attractiveness / appearance. The MGB has a great blend of authentic (original) patina and restoration of many of its original components to keep it looking fresh. Perhaps most important, the strength of this MGB is in its strong "bones" , especially when it comes to the lack of rust and rot in the "usual" places like the floor boards, rocker panels, lower fenders, under hood, chassis, jacking points, etc. Furthermore, we have no history that would suggest that the "B" has ever been involved in an accident and the body and chassis are as free from rust through as we have seen on any MGB in a long time. The history of this car from its long term owner reveals that it has been in California all of its life and never been the subject of any significant body damage or accidents and, frankly, it shows. Finally, to our taste, the combination of the exterior color, leather interior and beautiful wire wheels (authentic "knock off" mount, not bolt on) make this MGB a desirable example, indeed. An inspection of the underside of the MGB body reveals the same rust free nature and a solid, damage free chassis and floor pans. In fact, as the photographs suggest, there is no structural rust / rot in the car. The underside of the car has the normal patina of road grime and light discoloration but the floor pans, frame and other areas are as solid as a rock. Buyer's in other parts of the USA / World will appreciate these photos as those that only exist with a clean, California car that has had NO exposure to salt and minimal use in the wet. The battery boxes are as solid as we have ever seen and totally rust free. Any discoloration is from missing factory undercoating but there is NO damage or rust on either battery box. Photos show the underside of the boxes and the top side and MGB enthusiasts will note that the car was recently converted to one 12 volt battery to enable future owner's access to more readily available and less expensive batteries when replacements are needed. The trunk area is also totally solid with no rust through or rot / damage. The trunk contains a spare wire wheel/tire, along with the original jack. The doors and trunk close with a solid "thud" and show very good gaps. The same is true for the doors that show no signs of sagging and close very solidly and securely. The underside of the hood is clean as is the engine compartment and free of dirt, oil and grease. The engine shows many new components and the freshly rebuilt carburetors and other items are apparent. The trunk contains the original spare, jack and wheel hammer and is clean as well. The front hood latch works perfectly as does the safety latch. The exterior trim is in nice condition with rust free, bumpers (front & rear), front grill and exterior trim. The front and rear bumpers have none of the typical pitting, rust or damage found on cars that have had exposure to inclement weather climates. The exterior moldings are free from major damage and the stainless steel side moldings show the characteristic indentations / door dings from years of use but are not missing, or badly damaged. The side windows are free from cracks and damage. The front windshield is also free from any cracks or stars and was recently replaced by professional. There are some minor signs of rubbing from a previously defective wiper (now repaired). No attempt has been made to have these buffed out since these minor scratches do not significantly affect the outward vision form the driver's seat of the MGB. The chrome surrounding the windshield and other windows is good. The MGB has recently been converted to a newer style "frame attached" convertible top arrangement that eliminates the need to disassemble the top bows and store them in the trunk. There is no visual difference but the ease of use factor is considerable. A very nice touch, indeed. Also, the convertible top was replaced within the last year and has seen virtually no exposure to the elements since. The tires are in good condition and are a matched set of the proper size tires for the MGB. The wheels are the original wire wheel style. INTERIOR The interior has stock MGB seats, door panels and trim. The seats and door panels are free from rips, tears and signs of significant wear and tear. The interior reflects a high level of care and has been completely restored, including the beautiful new steering wheel. The seats and other panels are in excellent condition and the front seats and door panels (color coordinated) were replaced when the car received its cosmetic restoration. At that time, the cushions were replaced (back & bottom) along with the seats. The door panels are in beautiful condition, and do not have speakers cut in the panels. Upgraded, discreet speakers were installed in the areas behind the rear seats where they are virtually hidden but still produce great top down tunes! The rear side interior panels were replaced as was the rear carpet (that covers the battery boxes and surrounds the roll bar). This MGB has escaped the numerous modifications that we see on many older MGB's including: cut-up dash boards, incorrect instruments, etc. and remains largely stock with the exception of upgraded materials and the improved steering wheel. The MGB is fitted with an improved radio (in the stock dash opening) and a lovely, period style walnut shift knob emblazoned with the MG logo. The desirable metal dash remains in excellent condition and houses the stock gauges. The switches, toggles and metal dash are original style and in very nice, original condition. A 12 Volt connection (for a radar detector, GPS or other device) is nicely installed under the left side of the center console. The dash pad is excellent and, all of the gauges work. The lenses are clear and legible. The lights, wipers, turn signals and dash lights are fully functional. The temperature gauge is always within acceptable range and the oil pressure reads 60 lbs. when cold and only slightly lower when warm. The photographs accurately reflect the overall condition of the interior. The MGB is fitted with lap belts, also with the MG insignia. The radio / CD player is upgraded and sounds great playing through much improved speakers. No holes have been drilled to install the later upgraded modern stereo unit and speakers. As good as the radio sounds, frankly, we would much prefer to listen to the exhaust note of this MGB than the radio! The carpeting matches the interior (tan) and was re-done when the car was restored. It is in very good condition and is covered with high quality mats to protect the carpeting. The door sills and door jambs are clean and free from dirt and grease. Take a close look at the photos of the interior; it is really unique and absolutely brilliant! RUNNING / DRIVING CONDITION With ongoing maintenance like this, it will come as no surprise that the MGB runs and drives very well. The car starts immediately whether warm, or cold. The MGB runs very well and we cannot identify any issues with major components, including; the engine and transmission, rear end, brakes and suspension. All gauges read well within limits and oil pressure is excellent at 60+ lbs, even when warm. The MGB has always been garaged, and driven occasionally to ensure that all of the systems are fully operational / functional. This car is very solid and the mechanical components are confidence-inspiring. The engine is very strong and does not smoke, have any unusual noises, or exhibit any problems. There are no major leaks thanks to the care (and considerable investment) by the previous owner. We often see older MGB's with leaking rear ends, transmissions, steering rack, oil pans, etc. but virtually all of these areas have recently been addressed to eliminate these issues. Of course, as with any British car, it can be expected to "mark its territory" with minor oil/fluid leaks. However, we ask that you review the photographs that clearly show replacement of gaskets, seals and components underneath the car. The front suspension is very tidy, the brakes are all clean and recently re-done and while there is some residue from years past, there is no major leaking at this time. The MGB idles smoothly at approximately 1000 rpm, and does not hesitate, or have any drivability issues. The car runs cool, even in our 100+ degree California weather and has never over-heated or exhibited starting problems. The transmission shifts well and the synchromesh gears functions properly though all of the up-shifts. There is no noise in the transmission, rear end or engine. The clutch engages properly as a result of the recent clutch repairs, again within a few only a few hundred miles. The clutch engages without slippage, chattering, fuss or noise. The brakes work well and stop the car straight. The car passed the last safety inspection with major areas being within acceptable limits. The emergency brake holds but could stand adjustment (a minor service item) since on very major grades it will not hold the car if it is in neutral. The engine and engine bay are clean, and show the normal amount of accumulation of dirt, but there are no indications of significant oil leakage. We have owned/driven a large number of MGB cars over the years, and can say with confidence, that this is a really nice running/driving car that will provide years of future enjoyment with ongoing care similar to what the car has had since it was new. The MGB is exempt from California smog, one of the strictest states in the USA for smog requirements. While we imagine that it is exempt for virtually all States smog requirements, we ask that you check prior to bidding on the MGB (most states exempt everything 25+ years old and some states (from our experience) do not have any smog requirements. Of course, the MGB is being sold with a clear, transferable title. MISCELLANEOUS GENERAL INFORMATION ?
