Because the current owner has spent over $40,000 making this Espirit right. When the cylinder liner seal failure happened, former race car driver and owner of Viking Motorsports, Harry Appleby and crew were enlisted to build this incredible engine to the tune of over $22,000. Forged pistons, a forged steel crank and the correct Hylomar 3400 cylinder liner sealant (among a host of other things) means the bottom end is strong. Period. Reworked heads including all new valves, a ball bearing turbo upgrade and a Red Race ECU (custom programmed per Harry's specs) creates an extreme and reliable power plant, not a flash-in-the-pan firecracker dialed in just below self-destruct. Unwisely increased boost could easily send this 3.5 liter V8 to well over 500 horse power, at the risk of flinging its expensive internals into a shrapnel flecked pile of pricey parts. This engine sends a consistent 377 rear wheel horsepower to a completely rebuilt transaxle (also by Viking) with the stronger one-piece shaft and synchro upgrade. Cost: $9,100. From its $260 Porterfield brake pads and $1,300 master cylinder rebuild to the $1,100 Eagle F1 rubber, it has all been done and not a single corner was cut. The spectacular Azure Blue result is a bullet-proof missile that can dish it out at the track all day long, without overheating and come home in one piece with everything still attached. It is perfect for you because it's $40,000 you will not have to spend. This carbon-fiber splitter replaces the forgettable stock (black) unit. Painted to match the Azure Blue (stunning) exterior, this piece adds much needed downforce for high speed stability. The Espirit rockets to 60 MPH in a spine-tingling 4.1 seconds and scorches the 1/4 mile in 12.7 seconds @112 MPH. 1999 Lotus Espirit Twin Turbo V8 I strap myself in feeling more than a little trepidation. This is an Espirit V8 after all and, like every Lotus ever built, this one does not belong to me. I try to relax while the boss nervously guides me as I back out past multiple obstacles in our yard. I don't need help being extra careful with this car as I start imagining a hundred horrible things that could happen. An old toilet tumbling off a truck directly in front of me certainly would not be my fault but, we all know how such events are remembered. The clutch feels light and although it has a short take-up, engagement is smooth and progressive. It's that rare type of forgiving drive train that builds confidence instantly and makes you look (and feel) much more experienced than you are. Inspiring also are the brakes; powerful without being grabby and the steering is easy but even at this low speed, every subtle change of road surface is communicated not to my hands or fingers, but directly to my brain. What's happening between car and tarmac actually becomes part of me with a seamless connection so intimate, by the time I'm ready to stand on the loud pedal in second gear, I'm already a highly functioning member of this thrilling machine. Except, "thrilling" hardly does it justice. This particular twin turbo Lotus doesn't violently explode with forward thrust, it swells. Enormously. Instantly. Acceleration is immediate and so unbelievably massive, I thought I could feel the skin on my cheeks flatten toward my ears. It doesn't feel necessarily fast here in the cockpit, but the surrounding landscape is suddenly an unrecognizable blur and a glance at the speedometer confirms; oh damn! When did THAT happen? It feels so secure so, free of drama, I have time to reflect that this is how a car built for the express purpose of swiftness, handles great speed. Behind the wheel at 150 MPH, this Lotus feels exactly like a Camry does at 60. Cornering? Well, that's when the Espirit shows its breeding. Initial turn-in is aggressive but not vicious. What is brutal is actual cornering; unrelenting, fierce and incomprehensible if I hadn't experienced it myself. So that's what 0.94g skidpad grip feels like. The Brembo calipers clamp enormous vented rotors with enough authority to threaten retina detachment and nearly yank off my glasses. But, don't start thinking this is an uncivilized ride. As seen in the video, the air conditioner can ice things down in a hurry and if the British know anything, it's how to indulge occupants in acres of decadent leather. Even the A-pillars are stitched Connolly hides and everything you touch feels expensive. For a car with handling limits this extreme, the ride is down right comfortable and the UN1 transmission is a gem from heaven. This one has all the strength and reliability a $9,000 rebuild could give it and the $22,000 engine investment explains why this drive train does not feel fragile. Reluctantly, I head back to the shop but I feel a lot less apprehension about this 1999 Lotus Espirit. It has been intelligently improved to combine otherworldly performance with daily driver reliability. Its faults have been corrected and it is ready, simply to be enjoyed. Ultra rare? When was the last time you saw a Lotus? Since 1976, total Espirit production was just 10,675. This car is one of only 121 imported to the United States for 1999. "ACBC" on the nose badge is for Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman - designer, builder and founder of Lotus. Rear diffuser is new and painted to match the car. provenance 9-99 compliance label build date 9-16-99 Cobra alarm installed 10-11-99 US Customs - vehicle exported from Mariana Islands and imported to Charleston, South Carolina 11-5-99 California DMV - Rancho Santa Fe 15 miles 11-23-99 Symbolic Motor Car Company - La Jolla, California - vehicle serviced 5-15-00 Symbolic Motor Car Company - vehicle serviced 140 7-10-00 Symbolic Motor Car Company - accelerator cable adjusted 346 1-9-01 Symbolic Motor Car Company - recommended maintenance performed 620 10-29-01 Scottsdale Lotus - Scottsdale, Arizona - vehicle purchased by current owner 702 11-2-01 LOF, inspection 11-5-01 LOF 1,047 12-5-01 Nevada emissions - Henderson 2,065 1-14-02 LOF, new driver's side rear axle 4-4-02 LOF, new passenger side rear axle 5,046 4-27-02 Nevada emissions - Henderson 7-9-02 LOF, timing belts checked, new K and N filters, fuel injectors flushed, bearings packed, rotors turned and Porterfield racing brake pads installed 7-26-02 LOF, flushed brake/coolant systems 7,457 10-15-02 LOF, tires balanced, front end aligned, coolant flush 8,888 1-11-03 Sears - Henderson, Nevada - Die Hard battery 1-12-03 LOF 9,400 3-22-03 LOF, inspection 10,354 5-17-03 LOF 10,968 5-31-03 MWAP auto parts - oil pressure switch 8-9-03 LOF 11,546 11-15-03 LOF 12,556 2-14-04 LOF 13,400 6-18-04 LOF, bearings packed, fixed transmission leak, installed battery tender 13,918 8-28-04 LOF 15,102 11-11-04 LOF 15,622 1-22-05 car not driven due to weather 15,622 3-17-05 LOF 15,904 7-11-05 engine broke - cylinder liner sealant failure - 18 months to save for new engine 16,147 11-3-06 Sears - Henderson, Nevada - Die Hard battery 12-5-06 Viking Motorsports - Costa Mesa, California - picked up car with new engine 16,147 12-12-06 LOF 17,286 1-2-07 LOF, small oil leak 18,102 1-12-07 LOF 18,911 1-21-07 LOF 20,011 6-22-07 Norm Baker Motor Company - Las Vegas, Nevada - rebuild master cylinder, new front/rear brake pads, turn rotors 9-14-07 Discount Tire - Henderson, Nevada - new Eagle F1 rubber 1-21-08 LOF 22,447 2-1-08 Mild to Wild Motorsports - Las Vegas, Nevada - 3 dyno pulls 2-25-08 LOF 23,106 5-12-08 LOF 24,169 7-12-08 LOF 24,200 8-8-08 LOF 24,661 9-14-08 LOF 24,954 11-25-08 LOF, new brake pads, rotors turned, new carbon front lip, painted front end to doors 25,200 3-3-09 LOF 25,469 6-12-09 Viking Motorsports - Costa Mesa, California - new clutch and related, adjust cam drive belts, refit EGR tubes, new rear main seal, plugs, fuel filter, air filters cleaned, install new parking light switch, replace both engine covers, fitted new stabilizing brackets, 1st check on new engine 6-24-09 new ABS sensors 7-18-09 broke transaxle in Oregon 11-12-09 Viking Motorsports - transmission rebuild 11-14-09 Nevada emissions - Henderson 12-16-09 Viking Motorsports - transmission shits poorly, R + R, replace synchros 25,483 6-12-10 LOF 26,606 8-28-10 LOF - trip to Oregon 28,780 11-22-10 Nevada emissions - Henderson 29,008 11-23-10 LOF, "good check up" 29,090 3-4-11 LOF 3-4-11 VLVA consignment 29,785 4-6-11 current 29,830 Current low mileage (left) and current owner showing Doug what a buck-eighty feels like.
