1966 Morris Minor Convertible NO RESERVE Wimbledon White / Red Interior & Top Rare Right Hand Drive Very Original with Recent Original Color repaint _________________________________________________ NOTE: Our listings sometimes get rather lengthy. However, we continually hear from out of state / out of country buyers (many of our clients) that they prefer the level of detail that we provide. However, if you are not prepared to read multiple pages of description, we ask that you review the "Specifications" on the car along with viewing the photos. Also, if you'd prefer, please call us at 925-846-1451 and we'll gladly discuss the MORRIS MINOR and answer any questions over the telephone, including about our Buy it Now policies. Yes, the Morris Minor can be purchased prior to the end of the eBay auction. Again, please give us a call for details. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: EACH TIME WE LIST A VEHICLE ON EBAY WE RECEIVE COMMENTS THAT THERE ARE NO PHOTOS OF THE INTERIOR, ENGINE, UNDERCARRIAGE, ETC. OF THE CAR. THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER OF PHOTOS, BUT WHEN YOU REACH WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE LAST PHOTO, YOU WILL NEED TO SCROLL TO VIEW THE REMAINING PHOTOS. IF YOU ARE STILL UNABLE TO SEE THE PHOTOGRAPHS, PLEASE CALL US AND WE WILL PROVIDE A LINK FOR THE PHOTOS (IT IS A VIOLATION OF EBAY POLICY TO LIST THE URL ON THE EBAY LISTING). All of our photos are taken in natural light and we do not "Photo-Shop" or touch-up the photos in any way. Our descriptions make every effort to point out the cars strengths and weaknesses and we encourage independent inspections of any of automobiles. Please keep in mind that, in the case of the Morris Minor, the car is 45 years old! The "madness" is underway in the various auction venues around the country. We often times see a wide range of collectible cars / special interest cars sell for inflated amounts in the "heat of the moment." This car is offered at NO RESERVE and, unlike bidding on cars in an auction environment, you will have the benefit of information & history on the car prior to making a buying decision. Equally as important is the fact that Classic Cars Ltd. has been in business for 18+ years and enjoys an excellent national / international relationship with 600~ positive eBay feedback items. We can provide references in addition to those left by customers at Yahoo Reviews, Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA. (Please enter this information in Google to read our reviews) THANK YOU! CLASSIC CARS LTD. 925-846-1451 HISTORY OF THE MORRIS MINOR The Morris Minor was launched at the 1948 Motor Show held at Earls Court, which was the first Motor show held for ten years. If it had not been for Jaguar's launch of its XK 120 sports car at the same show the Morris Minor would have been the car of the show. The new Morris was a completely new model which had been designed over the war years by a team led by Alec Issigonis who was to be even more famous in later years for designing the Morris. It was deemed a revolutionary design and indeed it was when compared with the pre-war designs still being offered by Ford, Austin and Standard. The Minor was a delight to drive having superb handling and steering but from its early days suffered from not having a suitably powerful engine. When a half decent engine/gearbox combination was provided (Minor 1000) it was almost too late because the Morris was just round the corner. The Morris Minor was potentially a world-beating car and if it had additional development, it could have been as successful as its contemporary the VW Beetle. The story of the Morris `Minor, its lack of development and poor management mirrors the overall poor performance of the British motor industry from after the war to the sale of Rover to BMW. Initially, although the Minor was a revolutionary design, well received by both the public and motoring press it was not liked by Morris Motors founder and owner Lord Nuffield (William Morris) who is alleged to have likened it to a poached egg. His lack of enthusiasm did not bode well for the future of the Minor and subsequent reorganizations in the Motor Industry sealed its fate as one of Britain's great missed opportunities. During its 23 year production run a total of 1,619,857 Morris Minors were produced including 326,627 vans and pickups. Arguably, the convertibles were the most sought after of all of the variants of the Minor. The series II suffered from the inadequacy of the 803cc engine that worked well in the smaller and lighter Austin A30 but was still underpowered for the larger Morris. As the performance figures suggest, the Minor was still not fulfilling the potential that its handling and steering offered. Salvation nearly arrived in the form of an almost new design "A" series engine, now 948cc, coupled to a new gearbox. The combined effect was to transform the performance of the Minor and created the best of all the Minor models. To go with the "New" Minor was a major facelift including the disappearance of the center windscreen pillar, increased glass area helped by a larger wrap around rear window and other subtle changes. Despite the new one-piece windscreen, the wipers still retained their sweep pattern leaving a large un-wiped area in the middle. As a result of the improvements made the Minor had now entered its most successful phase and during the 6 year spell of this model range. Minors appeared on roads all over the world, and with improved promotion and development, the Morris Minor 1000 was even more successful and lasted well into the 1960's. HISTORY OF THIS PARTICULAR 1966 MORRIS MINOR It is hard to imagine that this Morris Minor has been around for over 45 years. Perhaps even more difficult to imagine is that this particular car made the long journey "over the pond" close to 15 years ago. "Emily" as she was affectionately named by her one California owner saw the car during a trip to England and fell in love. She had the car shipped over and, well, the rest is history. Since the car has been California it has been maintained by the father of the owner, a British car aficionado with a number of British sports cars and cars of interest. With the exception of ongoing maintenance (oil services, brakes, new tires, etc), "Emily" has not been modified or altered and remains in stock configuration. The Morris is clearly in the category of a "Driver" but will provide hour of enjoyment for someone that seeking a unique, fun to drive convertible for occasional use. Undoubtedly we will receive questions about the right hand drive. As a 1966, the Morris Minor is legal in all 50 states with the steering wheel on the right, not left side. Most British car enthusiasts enjoy the uniqueness of a RHD (Right Hand Drive) car and enjoy having the car in this, its original British configuration. We constantly hear stories from our customers about the looks that they receive when people think their dog is driving while sitting on the "driver's side seat! Of course, the pedal arrangement is the same as a left hand drive car (clutch on the left, brake in the middle and gas on the right) and the shift lever in the center. The cars are easy to drive with virtually no practice or learning curve. Also, these Morris Minor's were manufactured with a center dash "pod" so that they could be produced for both left and right hand drive applications. Also, the steering wheel and pedal assemblies can be moved to the left side of the car should the new owner so desire. While Emily's mileage cannot be confirmed due to her age and history, the owner felt that the mileage of 67,801 may well be original. Based on the cars appearance and the way it runs, it is certainly possible that the mileage is very low. However, since we do not have the history of the car since it was delivered new, we are unable to document the mileage. This Morris Minor is very stock both mechanically and cosmetically with very few exceptions and, as a result, will appeal to the purist that appreciates the value of originality. As the old saying goes "You can restore a car over and over again, but it is only original once." This adage certainly applies to this "Moggie" convertible. The Morris Minor has been repainted in its original, classic shade of Old English White. The interior appears to be largely original although some panels and carpeting have been changed over the years. Most interior trim items are original including; the speedometer (fully functional), glove boxes, glove box door, gauge and steering wheel. THIS 1966 MORRIS MINOR CONVERTIBLE We receive regular request for British "cars of interest" that are affordable, unique and while not in the major project category, requiring some tinkering or long term restoration. Many of our customers would like to purchase an inexpensive British car that they can use while they perform upgrades, improvements and even plan a long term, comprehensive restoration to meet their specific requirements. If this sounds interesting to you, the Morris Minor convertible may well be a car to consider. While this Morris Minor can be used and driven as it is, it certainly has room for improvement and could be brought to a higher level by its new owner. As the photos reflect, it is a complete example and has been licensed and registered in California for many years. While the car has been used minimally over the past several years and the car's owner has decided to pass "Emily" on to someone that will enjoy her and give her the attention that she deserves. Hopefully, that individual will address some of her cosmetic deficiencies and bring her back to her former glory. CONDITION - EXTERIOR / PAINT & CONVERTIBLE TOP Before making the car available for sale, the owner, a long time British car enthusiast and collector, prepared the car for a re-paint in its original factory color. Unfortunately, the quality of the body and preparation work was, well, not the best. The typically accumulated dents and imperfections were addressed but the repairs were not completed to a professional standard. As a result, while the car received a complete re-paint many areas that should have received better final sanding / were covered with a fresh paint of coat. Also, some of the filler that was used is showing signs of crazing / cracking. Some of these imperfections do not show in the photos but do exist. There are no signs of exterior rust or rust through in the rear of the trunk, exterior rocker panels, and inner door areas or under hood compartment where rust is commonly found on older Morris Minor cars. All of the windows roll up and there are no major cracks or chips in the glass. The exterior trim is in average condition for the age of the Morris Minor. The front and rear hood latches work and both close with gaps that aren't the best but the hood and trunk close properly and securely. Note: Manufacturing standards in the 50's / 60's when these cars were produced were significantly different than today as British car enthusiasts will tell you. Please review the photos closely to get a better idea of the exterior of the car. The paintwork was just completed within the past few months and is high gloss. The entire car was painted and there is some overspray on parts of the trim. The fenders were removed and new fender beading appears to have been installed so the beading was not painted over as is often times the case. The majority of the exterior and interior trim is original and retains considerable patina consistent with age of the car. The convertible top is in good condition and the rear window that while not perfectly clear, is definitely clear enough to see through. It has slight yellowing and the normal scratches from ageing. The top will hold out most of the weather but, as was the case when the cars were new, does not seal perfectly around the door and header panel. It has a few small tears (mostly confined to the sides here the doors hit the top, not the main part of the top) that will not be a concern to most Morris Minor buyer's who will use the car as a local "fair weather" car. Needless to say, this Morris Minor is more of a unique, specialty, limited purpose car than a daily driver or a commuter car. CONDITION - MECHANICAL As with the cars cosmetic condition, original is the best way to describe the cars mechanical condition. We are unable to provide history on the repairs and service that the Morris has received but it seems apparent that the car has been maintained over the years. The car starts immediately even after sitting for prolonged periods of time and warms up quickly. There is no offensive engine noise, significant leaking (of course it is British so some "seepage" is to be expected) or issue with overheating or drivability. The Morris has been 100% reliable and trouble free during our ownership. The Morris runs and drives just fine and accelerates through all 4 gears without any problems. It does not have any noise in the transmission and does not slip out of gear. The car retains what appears to be its original, non syncromesh first gear transmission but the other "syncros" in 2nd - 3rd operate as designed. The car can be driven at posted speed limits without any problem but is more at home around town where it admires considerable attention wherever we go. The brakes are also fully functional and stop the car straight and without any problems. The emergency brake is also functional. The Morris steers straight and stops straight. The tires are new, difficult to find 14" in close to the factory correct size. When it comes to the electrical system, the majority of the items are functional. Specifically, the lights, wipers, turn signals, tail lights and horn are functional. The speedometer is working but is very erratic (bouncing). LICENSE / REGISTRATION / INSPECTION ? We ask that prospective buyers consider our eBay history/feedback, standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd. ? Please keep in mind that minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present on every vehicle (regardless of cost) including small chips, nicks, scratches, and other imperfections that exist on virtually every used car. Also, ownership of a collectible / specialty vehicle is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles, these cars require regular, ongoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge, patience, and understanding can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said, collector / "specialty" car owners will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!! ? The information contained in this description is believed to be accurate but, in some instances, has been provided by the car's previous owner or other sources. As a result, we are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information. We encourage verification of "numbers" and significant data contained in this listing prior to the purchase of any collector vehicle that you are considering. We also encourage inspections prior to the end of the auction. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive eBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
