From its beautiful body (smooth metal, knock-out paint) to its like-new interior (nary a rip or tear to be found) this powerful roadster projects craftsmanship, care and superb maintenance to even the most critical observer. Tap the key and the SOHC V8 engine rumbles to life with authority and everything works, inside and out. With high polished chrome alloy wheels on a sleek, silver 2-seater Mercedes that has averaged a hard-to-believe 192 miles a month since new, it's easy to understand how it will be a no-brainer for the lucky winner of this topless fraulein. Viva Las Vegas Automotive Boot Camp: Our 130 point inspection was followed by a lengthy once-over at our Mercedes-Benz service center. The technicians found clean, topped off fluids, generous brake pads (see close-ups below) and plenty of tire tread. This 450SL is mechanically sound and functions as good as its bullet proof drive train suggests. For the nick-pickers out there; the signal lever is a little touchy to stay down sometimes when using the left blinker (all lights work perfectly) and there's an insignificant tiny crack in the dash (must be pointed out) next to the interior temperature sensor. The flaws on this Mercedes-Benz are few, the spectacular condition and quality is unmistakable. What was done to this powerful Mercedes-Benz 450SL before we got it: Other than averaging barely six miles a day over the past thirty three years, not much seems to have been done to this stunning car. At some point it acquired stainless fender lip moldings, window tint and a (killer sounding) CD stereo but other than that, it gives every indication of being parked indoors and rarely leaned on. What we've done this fine Mercedes-Benz 450SL: Full inspection/safety check, oil change, wiped off the undercarriage (might be the cleanest chassis we've ever seen on a Mercedes this vintage) and gave it a top level detail. We also unfolded the canvas top to the light of day for probably the first time. Like the rest of the car, it looks practically new. Low mileage and gentle ownership means we didn't have to do much of anything and neither will you. Just get in and enjoy the sun. (or moon) Research/background, what was said about the 450SL when new, what people are saying now: The SL-class Mercedes-Benz is really in a league of its own. When new this 450SL stickered roughly double the price of a loaded Corvette. Nothing says "I've arrived" quite like an SL roadster and the market on R107 series Mercedes-Benz has followed a steady uphill trend for years. The reason is simple; proportional good looks, old school German craftsmanship and a top-down Grand Touring driving experience that can be had in no other convertible. The myth about an old Mercedes being expensive to maintain is simply not true. The only time a Mercedes-Benz cost a lot is when it is purchased. As you can see, the front apron has not scraped over anything, like most other SLs. (all lights shine bright/work properly) Check out those high polished chrome alloy wheels. (not to mention those very tasteful wheel lip moldings and smooth metal) Body gaps are tight and consistent. Exterior soft trim is supple and black. (not hard and sun-bleached) Plenty of good rubber and beautiful chrome everywhere. Straight metal over here too and spectacular paint. This 1978 450SL certainly looks like it has averaged just 44 miles a week since new. Everything works in here and looks almost like a new car. MB-Tex looks awesome and stays looking new much longer than leather. (also, people will believe, if you tell them it's leather) Works out to about 2,300 miles a year. (wow!) ProAudio head unit (with rear Pioneer 6x9 speakers) sounds great. (left) Console wood condition is in superb condition. (right) We broke out the top for probably the first time to find it in outstanding original condition. (rear windows are crystal clear) Clarion CD changer in trunk (left) and working original power antenna. (right) 4.5 Liter SOHC V8: 180 horsepower @ 4,750/220 lb-ft torque @ 3,000 RPM (clean and dry) Another wow; exhaust shielding is still intact. We usually sell about a dozen of these gems a year and have never had one come in with an undercarriage looking this good. Unbelievable really, for everything down here to be this original and still look this new. Brake pads are good.
