THIS CAR WAS MADE IN THE TRADITION OF THE SLEEPER HOT ROD . THIS 1982 MERCEDES LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER SLOW 240d BUT UNDER THE HOOD , IT IS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT . A LOT OF ENGINEERING , WORK AND QUITE A BIT OF CASH HAS GONE INTO THIS CAR TO MAKE IT TO BE MORE THAN THE SUM OF IT's PARTS . THE ONLY OUTWARD CLUE THAT ANYTHING UNUSUAL IS GOING ON HERE IS THE TWIN TAILPIPES . EVERYTHING ELSE APPEARS TO BE TOTALLY STOCK , RIGHT DOWN TO THE DASH & SHIFT KNOB . THE ENGINE INSTALLED WAS A NEW CHEVY 350 CRATE ENGINE . THE HORSEPOWER IS SOMEWHERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 300 . THE MOTOR IS SET AS FAR BACK AS POSSIBLE TO MAINTAIN A GOOD WEIGHT BALANCE . A CUSTOM MADE OIL PAN WAS JUST THE START OF WHAT IT TOOK TO PULL THIS OFF . THERE ARE NO KITS FOR THIS . IT IS ALL CUSTOM WORK . IT IS MATED TO A BORG WARNER T-5 5 SPEED TRANSMISSION . ( THIS CAR WAS ORIGINALLY A 4 SPEED MANUAL ) THE MOTOR & TRANSMISSION MOUNTS WERE ALL CUSTOM MADE . TO KEEP WITH THE BENZOLET THEME WHILE MAKING SURE ALL EVERYTHING IN THE CAR WAS COMPARABLE , THE CAR USES MERCEDES ALTERNATOR , POWER STEERING PUMP AND AC COMPRESSOR . THESE ARE ALL MOUNTED ON CUSTOM FABRICATED BRACKETS . THE AIR CLEANER CAME FROM A V-8 MERCEDES . BUT THE BENZ GUYS DIDN'T OFFER ONE WITH TWIN INTAKE SNORKELS . THIS ONE IS ACTUALLY MADE FROM TWO MERCEDES AIR CLEANERS ! INSIDE IT THERE IS A LARGE K&N AIR FILTER AND UNDER THE BACK IS A GRAFTED IN INVERTED HUMP TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE DISTRIBUTOR . THERE ARE TWIN COLD AIR INTAKES FED THROUGH FUNNELS OVER THE HEADLIGHTS . THE AIR CLEANER IS MOUNTED TO A HOLLEY 540cfm CARBURETOR AND OFFENHAUSER DUAL PLANE INTAKE MANIFOLD . IT USES A MALLORY UNILITE DISTRIBUTOR AND A MSD 6A INNITION MODULE . THE IGNITION WIRING LOOMS WERE CUSTOM MADE FOR THIS ENGINE FROM STAINLESS STEEL . IT HAS POLISHED ALUMINUM VALVE COVERS WITH MERCEDES EMBLEMS MOUNTED ON THEM TO ADD TO THE RUSE . ALONG WITH THE GIANT AIR CLEANER , THIS HAS ACTUALLY FOOLED SOME PEOPLE INTO THINKING IT WAS BUILT THIS WAY ! IT USES A SOLID ALUMINUM GRIFFIN RACING RADIATOR .THESE ARE AMAZING & COULD PROBABLY COOL TWO ENGINES ! INSIDE THE CAR , THERE IS A ZEBRA WOOD MERCEDES SHIFT KNOB . IT IS MOUNTED TO THE GM 5-SPEED . THE GAUGE POD WAS REPLACED WITH ONE FROM A 300 TURBODIESEL . THIS WAS DONE TO GET RID OF THE GIANT CLOCK AND REPLACE IT WITH A TACHOMETER ( WITH A LITTLE CLOCK IN IT's FACE ) . THIS ALSO PROVIDED A 125mph SPEEDOMETER IN THE PLACE OF THE ORIGINAL 85mph SPEEDO . A GREAT DEAL OF WORK WAS DONE TO RETAIN A FUNCTIONING TACH WITH THE GAS CONVERSION . THE ORIGINAL DIESEL UNIT WAS REMOVED AND IT WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW VDO V-8 UNIT . ALL OF THE GAUGES IN THIS CAR WORK PERFECTLY . EVEN THE CLOCK KEEPS GOOD TIME . A HUGE WEBASTO POWER SLIDING SUNROOF WAS INSTALLED IN THE CAR . THIS TOO WORKS PERFECTLY AND COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE ANY COOLER . ( THESE COST OVER $1200 ) THIS IS A TRIED & PROVEN CONVERSION THAT HAS COVERED OVER 60,000 MILES AS A BENZOLET . IT IS A WILLING & ABLE PERFORMER . THE TOTAL MILES ON THIS CHASSIS IS ABOUT 210,000 . NOW FOR THE BAD . THE PAINT ON THIS CAR IS TIRED & REALLY STARTING TO SHOW IT's AGE . IT HIT A DEER LAST YEAR THAT DAMAGED THE GRILL & HOOD . IT WAS REPAIRED WITH A NEW RADIATOR & SUPPORT PANEL . THE HOOD WAS REPLACED WITH THE PUMPKIN ORANGE ONE YOU SEE IN THE PICTURES . THE AC WORKED FINE BEFORE THE ACCIDENT BUT THE CONDENSER WAS DAMAGED & REMOVED . THERE IS A NEW ALUMINUM CONDENSER TO GO WITH THE CAR . THE LINES WERE PLUGGED WHEN THE CONDENSER WAS REMOVED SO IT SHOULD NOT BE HARD TO GET THE AC WORKING AGAIN . THE SEATS AND DOOR PANELS ARE ALL NICE ON THIS CAR .
