THIS IS A RARE AND MAGNIFICENT RESTORATION, WITH AN INTERESTING STORY BEHIND IT. I ACTUALLY OWNED THIS CAR BRAND NEW IN 1972, THIS WAS THE FIRST NEW CAR I HAD EVER PURCHASED. MY FATHER CO-SIGNED THE BALANCE OF THE LOAN ON THIS CAR FOR ME, AND I PAID HIM $100 A MONTH FOR THREE YEARS. AFTER ROGER PENSKE AND MARK DONAHUE WON THE TRANS-AM SERIES, I HAD TO HAVE THIS CAR. IT WAS RARELY SEEN THEN, AND EVEN MORE SO NOW, WITH APPROX. ONLY 300 OF THESE AMX 401 4-SPEEDS BEING BUILT IN 1972. I LOVED THIS CAR, HOWEVER; WHEN THE OIL EMBARGO STRUCK, AND FUEL COULD ONLY BE PURCHASED ON ODD AND EVEN DAYS, I RELUCTANTLY SOLD HER AS MANY GUYS DID BACK THEN. I HAD SINCE GONE THRU AND OWNED MANY MUSCLE CARS, BUT ALWAYS HAD A FONDNESS FOR THIS AMX. ABOUT 12 YEARS AGO, I SET ABOUT LOOKING FOR HER. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I FOUND IT LESS THAN 40 MILES FROM MY HOME IN VIRGINIA! THE MAN WHO OWNED HER WAS ALSO THE SECOND OWNER....IT WAS HIS "HIGH SCHOOL CAR", HE SOLD IT AND SUBSEQUENTLY BOUGHT IT BACK FROM A MAN IN MARYLAND YEARS LATER. THE CAR WAS IN NEED OF A COMPLETE RESTORATION, AND THIS MAN WOULD NOT SELL IT AT THE TIME, AS HE HAD INTENTIONS OF RESURRECTING HIS HIGH SCHOOL CAR. FIVE YEARS LATER...... I CALLED HIM AGAIN, HE HAD DONE NOTHING TO THE CAR AND AGREED TO SELL HER TO ME. THE OVERWHELMING PROJECT BEGAN, AND THEN GREW OUT OF CONTROL, PUTTING THE BEST OF AND BECOMING THE MOST EXTENSIVE RESTORATION I HAVE EVER UNDERTAKEN. KEEP IN MIND, I AM JUST A 57 YEAR OLD MUSCLE CAR ENTHUSIAST, WHO LOVES TO TURN WRENCHES AND HAVE RESTORED MANY CARS AND MOTORCYCLES OVER THE YEARS. MANY COMPONENTS OF THIS PROJECT WERE FARMED OUT AS I DO NOT CONSIDER MYSELF AN EXPERT RESTORER, THIS WAS A THREE YEAR PROJECT. BODY.......THE BODY WAS COMPLETELY STRIPPED TO A SHELL, ALL GLASS REMOVED AND SAND BLASTED. THERE WERE SEVERAL PROBLEM AREAS TYPICAL TO OLD CARS, THE FENDER TROUGHS WERE RUSTED AS WERE THE BASE OF THE "A" & "C" PILLARS AND BOTTOM OF THE REAR QUARTERS. THESE WERE REPLACED WITH 16 GAUGE STEEL AND FIT TO PERFECTION. THE CAR WHEN I FOUND IT WAS VOID OF ANY INTERIOR, AND SINCE IT WAS REMOVED, IT THEREFORE HELD NO MOISTURE, AND THERE WAS VERY LITTLE RUST, THE ROCKER PANELS, FLOORS AND TRUNK WERE ALMOST PERFECT, AS WAS THE ROOF, FENDERS AND DOORS. THE FRAME, ROCK SOLID. THE CAR WAS INVOLVED IN A MINOR ACCIDENT BY THE "HIGH SCHOOL GUY" AND HAD A DONOR DRIVERS DOOR AND LEFT FRONT FENDER. ALL OTHER PANELS ARE ORIGINAL. HAS FRONT AND REAR SPOILERS, AND COWL INDUCTION HOOD. THE GRILL AND TAILLIGHTS ARE PERFECT!! THE TAILLIGHTS WERE PURCHASED AS NEW OLD STOCK AT A RIDICULES COST.....I'M ALMOST EMBARRASSED TO SAY HOW MUCH. THIS IS A ONE YEAR ONLY TAILLIGHT, AND THEY ARE NEW!! THE GRILLS ARE FRAGILE, THIS ONE SHOWS AS NEW. STAINLESS AND GRADE 8 HARDWARE WERE USED THROUGHOUT. I HAVE PICTURES OF THE ENTIRE PROCESS, OVER 200 THAT WILL GO TO THE NEW OWNER. TITLE IS CLEAR VIRGINIA TITLE, AND IN HAND. ENGINE.....THIS IS THE ORIGINAL 401 ENGINE THAT CAME WITH THE CAR, AND HAD NEVER BEEN REBUILT. IT IS BORED .30 OVER AND I USED THE BEST OF EVERYTHING WHEN BUILT. I'M SORRY I DO NOT REMEMBER THE COMP CAM # WE USED, ALTHOUGH I'M SURE I HAVE RECEIPTS FOR IT, HOWEVER, IT IS A MILD CAM WITH FULL ROLLER ROCKERS. THIS WAS REBUILT BY A MACHINE SHOP WHO HAD VAST EXPERIENCE WITH AMC ENGINES, BUILDING THEM FOR MUD BOGGERS. THE MACHINE WORK WAS DONE BY BILL GWYNN, A SOMEWHAT FAMOUS AMC DRAG RACER, WHO TODAY STILL HOLDS SEVERAL NHRA RECORDS! THERE IS THE DEBATABLE OILING MODIFICATION IN THE VALLEY, NEW EVERYTHING!! OIL PUMP, WATER PUMP, PISTONS, RINGS, CAM, VALVES, ETC. THERE IS WELL OVER $5K IN THIS ENGINE. IT RUNS FLAWLESSLY AND HAS PLENTY OF GRUNT! NO.......THIS CAR IS FAST!!! TRANSMISSION....ORIGINAL T-10 AMC TRANSMISSION.....INTERESTING STORY HERE AS WELL. I MET THE SHOP FOREMAN FOR G-FORCE SOUTH AT AN EVENT AT CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY. WE TALKED ABOUT MY PROJECT, AND HE AGREED TO REBUILD MY TRANSMISSION. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT KNOW WHO G-FORCE SOUTH IS, WELL, THEY BUILD ALL THE 4-SPEEDS FOR NASCAR TRUCK AND NATIONWIDE SERIES. THIS IS A FIRST CLASS RACE OPERATION. HE LITERALLY BUILT ME A NASCAR TRANSMISSION AND REBUILT MY HURST SHIFTER WHERE THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PLAY IN IT. YOU REALLY ONLY NEED THE CLUTCH FOR FIRST GEAR, IT WILL SLIDE INTO THE OTHER THREE SMOOTH AS BUTTER. IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL, I HATED TO BUTTON IT UP! ELECTRICAL.....EVERYTHING NEW!! HAD A BRAND NEW WIRING HARNESS MADE AT CONSIDERABLE EXPENSE AS I DID NOT WANT TO BE CHASING DOWN ELECTRICAL GREMLINS ON THIS BUILD. NEW SINGLE WIRE GM ALTERNATOR, NEW AC DELCO BATERY, VOLTAGE REGULATORS, GM ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTOR, ETC........LIKE I STATED.....EVERYTHING NEW. CHASSIS.....AGAIN, EVERYTHING IS BRAND NEW, USING AC DELCO CHASSIS COMPONENTS. TO INCLUDE, ROTORS, BRAKE CALIPERS, ALL BRAND NEW STAINLESS BRAKE LINES, DRUMS, SHOES, STEERING COMPONENTS, SHOCKS, NEW REAR LEAF SPRINGS AND POWER STEERING PUMP. THE AMX HAD THE "GO PAK" OPTIONS, SO THE FRONT AND REAR SWAY BARS ARE ENORMOUS, MUCH LARGER THAN OEM. GLASS......NEW TINTED WINDSHIELD, WITH ALL OTHER GLASS BEING ORIGINAL IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, TO INCLUDE A RARE HEATED REAR GLASS, ALL REGULATORS HAVE BEEN REBUILT WITH NEW BUSHINGS AND WORK GREAT. ALL NEW WEATHER STRIPPING, DOORS, WINDOWS AND TRUNK. CHROME.....THE CHROME IS ALL AS NEW, WITH RECHROMED FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS, AND ALL STAINLESS STRAIGHT AND POLISHED. PAINT....PAINT IS STUNNING.......ORIGINALLY THIS CAR WAS ADMIRAL BLUE, THIS IS VERY SIMILAR PPG PAINT BASE/CLEAR WITH A LITTLE METALLIC IN HER....LOOKS AWESOME, WITH A PEARL WHITE "T" STRIPE, OUTLINED IN RED........TO GIVE THIS CAR THE AMC RED, WHITE AND BLUE THEME. BETWEEN THE STRIPPING, PRIMING AND PAINT, THIS WAS A $10K PAINT JOB, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED AND IS LITERALLY FLAWLESS. AS I HAD FULL INTENTIONS OF NEVER SELLING THIS CAR, I DID DO SEVERAL SMALL MODIFICATIONS TO THE CAR. THE CAR WILL STAY COOL ON THE HOTTEST OF DAYS, AND JUST LOOKS MENACING. INTERIOR......AGAIN.....EVERYTHING LOOKS PERFECT......INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY IS ORIGINAL REPRODUCTION BY "LEGENDARY INTERIORS", SEATS, SLIDERS AND UPHOLSTERY WERE PROFESSIONALLY DONE. NEW TOP GRADE PILE CARPET. ALL THE PANELS WERE PROFESSIONALLY DYED, NEW HEAD LINER. THE DASH **WAS NOT** REDYED, IT LOOKED TOO GOOD TO MESS WITH, AND WANTED TO KEEP IT ORIGINAL. A/C EQUIPPED DOES HOWEVER; MAKE THIS EVEN A MORE RARE CAR, 401, 4-SPEED, GO-PAK, A/C CAR........ THERE ARE SEVERAL SMALL THINGS I NEVER GOT AROUND TOO, I HAVEN'T DRIVEN THE CAR BUT ONCE THIS YEAR, TO A MAJOR CAR SHOW, WHICH IT TOOK FIRST IN ITS CLASS (PUT IN MOPAR)...AND IT GOT TOTAL ATTENTION FROM EVERYONE!! SPEEDO IS NOT HOOKED UP, CABLE IS IN BUT NOT HOOKED UP(I WOULD ESTIMATE ONLY 200 OR SO MILES ON THIS CAR SINCE COMPLETE) INTERIOR LIGHTS NOT HOOKED UP, AM RADIO NOT HOOKED UP ( I PLANNED ON PUTTING IN A SATELLITE RADIO) PARKING BRAKE IS NOT CONNECTED. THE CAR IS ROCK SOLID AND I WOULD LET MY WIFE DRIVE ACROSS COUNTRY IN IT WITH OUT WORRY. I WOULD ESTIMATE THAT I HAVE THE BETTER PART OF $40K IN THIS CAR, AND UNTOLD HOURS OF LABOR.
