Vehicle Detail
General Information: Up for auction is one of the 444 1957 Continental Mark II's made. It has factory air conditioning (front and rear with vents in the headliner), power windows, power front seat and all leather interior. It is white with a blue and white interior. Car is complete and very straight, a great candidate for restoration, however, the engine is locked up and will have to be rebuilt. I do not know what is wrong with it, so please assume it will not run without a rebuild. The only rust I can find on the car is in the front fenders just behind the front wheel openings (See attached photos) The floor pans, frame and trunk pan are rust free (just surface rusted underneath). As you can see in the photos, the plug in the spare tire well has been removed at some time and it is rust free and in perfect condition. The floorpans have been undercoated and are nice. History of Car I don't know the entire history of the car, but it was supposedly owned new by Illinois Senator Treadwell, as evidenced by the sticker on the front right of the windshield (see picture), but I don't have any other documentation to prove this. I have a bill of sale from Arkansas in 1991 where the car was sold by Catherine Treadwell to G.R. Pike and then the car was traded to a man in Virginia in recent years, before I purchased it. I found gas receipts in the glove box from Arkansas in 1984 and there was an Illinois license plate from 1978 in the trunk, so I assume the car was in Illinois until at least1978 and in Arkansas up to 1991. There are also four very interesting badges in the front grill, each one is different and one has the name "Cote D Azur" which we know as the French Riviera and one has "Automobile Club Cannes" which is a French car club that is still active. Cannes is a city in southeastern France (French Riviera). I don't know whether the car ever spent time in France or whether a previous owner traveled there and brought back the badges, but they appear to be from the 1950's or 1960's. I can't make out what the other two say on them. Exterior Condition The passenger's side rear quarter panel and trunk lid have been stripped to bare metal and primed. The paint is cracked and chipped on the rest of the car, but there is no rust except in the front fenders as mentioned before. The car appears to have been painted one time before, but it has evidently been many years ago. There is a scrape along the passenger's side quarter panel down low, just behind the door, looks like somebody rubbed the car against something and creased it. The driver's side window is cracked, all other glass is good. The engine bay is in good shape as can be seen in the photos. I was told the back window had been busted out at one time and the owner duct taped a plastic tarp over the back half of the car, which caused the paint to flake off. A new back window has been installed recently, the stainless trim is all there and goes with the car, but hasn't been reinstalled yet. The bumpers will need to be rechromed, the back has some surface rust in the corners, the front bumper is in pretty good shape and shines up nicely. The exhaust that is supposed to come out through the back bumpers has been rerouted under the back bumper, which probably saved the ends from rusting out completely. The gas door which is behind the left tailight works good, but the gas cap is missing. The front grill is all there and not dented or cracked anywhere that I can see. All stainless trim is in place. The stainless around the windows is excellent, the rocker trim has a few small dents, especially along the passenger's side. Wipers are all there, but I don't know if they work or not. Interior Conditon The interior is not too bad, but the back seat has split at several of the seams and is worse than the front seat. The front seat has one seam that has split on the driver's side, otherwise it is intact and in average shape. The backs of the front seats are nice and the door panels are O.K. The headliner is intact and in good shape with no rips or tears or major staining. The leather covering over the top of the gauges has been removed. The dashpad is crack free, but faded. The carpet is not torn up or ripped anywhere and appears to be original, but is dirty in some areas. All panels under the dash are in place and the carpeted glove box opens. The interior lights work and headlights work, but something is wrong with the ignition switch and I haven't been able to test the turn signals or brake lights. There is no brake pedal, but the emergency brake works. The odometer reads 73,837 miles, I do not know if it has rolled over or whether that is the acutal mileage. The top mesh part of the package tray has cracked up, but the tray underneath is still intact. Other The car comes with a new brake kit from Mark II Enterprises, which includes new wheel cylinders, springs, front and rear brake hoses, brake shoes, etc. The cost was $429.00 plus a core charge for the shoes. Since I could not get the car to run, I did not take the time to get the brakes working. I also installed new plugs after taking out the old ones and putting Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders to try to free up the engine. I also have new upper and lower radiator hoses and a new battery I just installed last month. Please ask questions, I will try to answer them to the best of my knowledge. This is the first Mark II I have ever owned and I am not an expert on them, but I will try to answer specific questions about this car to the best of my ability. I have perfect ebay feedback and have tried to describe the car exactly. If I have forgotten something please ask. I will be glad to take additional photos of anything you want to see, so please email requests. Winning bidder is to make a $500 deposit through paypal within 24 hours of the end of the auction and pay the balance in full within 7 days (5 business days), whether the car has been picked up or not. The buyer is reponsible for all shipping costs and any potential buyer is welcome to come look at the car in person. I can store the car for up to 30 days after the end of the auction, but no longer.
