It was built right (like all Mercedes from this period) and is still right twenty three years later. (like very few are today) Why we chose this car: Because it fits our unique criteria of being a very special car. This is one of the cleanest E-class sedans you will likely ever see. It wears its original (optional, extra cost) Smoke Silver paint on smooth, undamaged metal with just a hint of patina, indicating a lifetime of indoor storage. Indeed; the lengthy service documentation (see below) tell a story of consistent care and adherence to scheduled maintenance. This car has one of the most impeccable interiors we've ever seen. Where most Mercedes of this age show their wear inside, this 260E feels, looks and smells almost like new. If you are familiar with Mercedes Benz's seats, years of use will make them feel like they bottom out and foams start to break down; not on this car. I feel quite comfortable claiming these seats feel and look like seats from a car twenty three years younger, Like New! The result is a twenty three year old Mercedes-Benz that doesn't look a day over ten and that is part of what makes this rare gem of an E-class so unique. It is also why buyers are going to line up for a chance to own this rolling tribute to old school quality and reliability. Viva Las Vegas Automotive Boot Camp: Our 130 point inspection found a Mercedes that started and drove almost like new. Its few issues relate mostly to age, not neglect or abuse. A missing trim piece around the driver's interior door lever, some cracking on the center armrest piping and a BB size hole in the light cover by the passenger side headlamp are the only items worth mentioning. The sun roof will not open but everything else works and that includes the air conditioner. All chrome and soft trim is great, the lights shine bright, the glass is clear and the wheels are round. Clean oil, topped off fluids, great tires and new brakes means this 260E is ready for the road. In fact, the paint meters around the entire car at the factory original specifications. It may be possible that the bumpers were repaired or replaced but the original VIN tags are on those as well. Although Carfax likes to make themselves out like the Vehicle History Gurus, they consistently misreport issues and conditions. A professional hands on/eyes on appraisal from a veteran of 23 years is always better than Carfax. What we've done this car: Replaced the aforementioned door pull trim, the vacuum system serviced and a general maintenance refreshing. Sprayed off the undercarriage, gave it a good detail and here it is. This Mercedes Benz didn't need much of anything - that's why we got it. Research/background, what was said about the Mercedes E-class when new, what people are saying now: The extreme durability of W124 series Mercedes is well documented. The Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart has on display a 1988 E-class sedan that racked up over 1.6 million miles as a taxi in Portugal. Like all E-class Mercedes-Benz vehicles, this 260E goes about its business with quiet dignity and if taken care of (like this 260E has been) will last a lifetime. This car cost more than a Corvette when new and was highly regarded by the automotive press and happy owners alike. Today, E-class Mercedes-Benz vehicles in top condition are considered a rare find. Tires have years of life left and everything works, inside and out. Smooth body panels looking down the side, great original paint and superb trim. Seams are tight and consistent and the dark tint is nice too. Dash, door panels, headliner all are great and everything in here works. Carpet is superb and original MB-Tex upholstery looks absolutely stunning. Original mileage works out to about 4,600 miles a year since new, nearly a third of normal annual mileage.
