Why we chose this very rare Camaro: Big block Camaros are a rare breed and many you see today did not come that way from the factory. Nothing wrong with that but a 1st gen that was originally equipped with a 396 is truly a special car. This Camaro has everything an F-bod lover loves; it's an original SS with the RS package, it's a big block and it's a 4-speed. Not only that, this 396 build is a power addict's dream come true and it has easy starting reliability too. A bullet proof drive train, a buttoned down chassis with a stunning interior all wrapped in a spectacular body wearing the deepest rich blue you have ever seen . . . do we need to explain why we like this Camaro? Viva Las Vegas Automotive Boot Camp: Our 130 point inspection found clean oil, no leaks, new brakes and a functionally sound/safe car. Steering and suspension is tight with no pulling, shake or shimmy. The engine starts with the tap of the key, the 4-speed is a gem and road manners are poised, probably better than any new Camaro ever was. This car was fresh off a restoration when we got it and the headlight doors did not function so we fixed that. It's a complete, finished project - that's why we (and you will) like it. What was done to this Camaro before we got it: A full restoration, professional engine build, complete new interior and dazzling paint over an already straight body. It's all been done with a high attention to detail. This is how a Camaro is supposed to look and the performance of this thing is down right scary. What we did to this Camaro: As mentioned above, we fixed the headlight doors so they work perfectly. We relocated the battery to the trunk with a slick billet tray/hold-down kit made especially for Optima batteries. Other than a good steam cleaning and a lengthy detail, that's about it. We also cleaned up the traction bars and repainted them. As you can see in the videos, the boss enjoyed driving this car but if I may; I'd like to say that your humble scribe spent some time behind the wheel too. My description below comes close to describing my experience piloting this incredible Camaro. Power like this is a singular event you won't soon forget. No exaggeration, this Chevy is seriously fast. Settled behind the wheel, I tilt it down before pushing in the clutch and exhale with slight trepidation. When I twist the key, ignition is immediate and the seismic thunder unique to big block Chevys booms with a chaotic symphony announcing the presence of a very large and lumpy camshaft. People hear this 396 idle, they know what it is; the junior panty league need not apply. I remind myself, this is not a child's plaything. Taking the Hurst shifter in hand, I find first with a satisfying push forward and roll smoothly out of the clutch. To preserve cordial relations with the neighbors, I shift quickly to 2nd but I can't help leaning into the throttle a little to feel the fire hose of torque that even this light pedal pressure creates. The megalodon under the hood seems to remind: "there's a lot more my friend so don't even think about it on this street." I back off wisely before turning on to an empty thoroughfare and a polite visit to four grand in first gear. After catching 2nd, I stand hard on the loud pedal for the full Monty. The Mark IV monster responds with a savage howl accompanied by a shockwave of inertia so vast, the Camaro assumes a firm rearward squat as the rear swings slightly to the left before the posi regains control of the situation. I'm in full pucker now, straining my neck to bring the tarmac back into view while the urgent need to be in third gear happens in a blistering nanosecond. With a distinct chip, the front of the car lifts again as wind roar rises with the deafening crescendo of afterburner. Everything in the peripheral is a frightening blur and the instinct for survival brings an intensity of focus to what needs to be done to keep this land missile on the ground. Fourth gear hurls me and my driver's license toward triple digits so fast I have to laugh at how hopelessly inadequate a 120 MPH speedometer is. Acceleration is so fierce in fact, I become philosophical; when exactly does this damn thing run out of steam and at what terrifying velocity might that be? That's the magic of an engine like this; it makes the leaping of tall buildings and/or speeding along faster than a bullet seem quite possible - routine, even.
