Vehicle Detail

1989 Porsche 928 GT. To my knowledge this is the 60th built of the 89GT's. See wwwdot928registrydotorg/1989-928GT-registry-listing-pagedothtm I've had for a few years and enjoyed immensely. Putting all my effort into a GT40 at the moment, so here is the 928GT for sale. Had one 914-6, two versions of the 911, and a 86.5 928 previously, fun machines but nothing at all like this 928. This car scoots right along and is easy to control for drivers of less than professional skills such as myself. Mechanically this machine is very sound. Water pump replaced, tensioner rebuilt, new timing belt as preventative maintenance when I got the machine (comes with the famous Jay Kempf timing belt tension tool). No wear seen on the water pump or belt, but the tensioner was leaking oil so new seals installed. Oil pan gasket and front crank seal replaced. Used Wally's technique for oil pan gaskets and for the first time ever I had a Porsche that didn't puddle the garage floor. 2/6 rod bearing Plastigaged out at 0.038mm, perfect. The left side seal of the steering rack is starting to get weepy, so this will need attention within the next few years. Four wheel alignment by Devek with new Kumho's and custom spacers on the wheels so that the suspension parts and wheel well don't ever rub the tire (with maybe a millimeter clearance all around - these are wide tires). Windows, sunroof, even the electric rear hatch release work. It's all good, sometimes even great. The only thing I never did that I had always intended to do was the fine adjustment on the camshaft timing. Valvoline synthetic in the engine. Redline mix in the transmission/rear differential to ensure the limited slip works properly (per Susan's advice at Devek). Rear muffler bypass. Has passed California smog every time so far, just drive the car like heck to get it really hot before you have the test done. As typical for Porsche 928's of this era, the 'soft' parts are weak. The dash pod is cracked (see photo). The driver seat left hand seat bolster pleather wore through, I swapped with the passenger side to prevent further damage (see photo). The seats are allegedly leather in the contact points, I guess the bolster was not considered a contact point. The paint is pock marked from rock hits, and there is a dent on the top of the LEFT front fender from where an air hose burst and slapped the car. See photo (it's worse than the photo shows, at least in my opinion). The paint is bubbled at the exhaust exit in the rear (see photo). This occurred on my watch, can only think it was on one of my 640 mile runs down to Arizona in August. And yes, the machine cruises very nicely at 140-150 on INT-5 south. The driver and passenger window tinting is unlawfully dark, I've never been stopped for it but you are duly warned. Zaino's only for the detail work. This stuff works, use it. This is a machine to drive, not to park on the grass for folks to look at and imagine what it could possibly do if the engine was running. Get in, punch it, hang on and pay attention. Some spares and other info to pass along. I'll post this for sale with the photos and add verbiage in the next few days. Definitely a few words to say about the sound system and the electric cooling fans and flaps on the radiator. Details: Sold as is, where is. No warranty given or implied. No returns. No reserve. Winning bidder to pay a $1000 non-refundable deposit by PayPal within 24 hours of auction close. Balance due by cashiers check within 5 business days. Once funds clear, the machine and title is yours. I can hold garaged for one month if that helps in transport arrangements. Available for inspection anytime (it's unfortunate Devek has closed, they were great for this as well as a whole bunch of other stuff). Thanks all. I hope whoever buys the machine can enjoy it as much as I have. Would I buy it again? ABSOLUTELY. Revised 14-NOV-2010:Ships with both original Owners Manual and original Warranty and Maintenance Manual. Originally sold October 11, 1989 at Porsche dealer #1223, Indianapolis. Engine number: M28/47 85K00461 Option codes for this machine: M28.47-85K (engine code) G2855 (transmission code) L700 NK CO2 018 046 158 220 340 383 387 393 418 474 481 570 639 650 639 denotes the GT option474 denotes sports suspension 220 denotes the locking diff 40% 481 denotes manual 5 speed 570 denotes rear AC CO2 denotes catalytic units See wwwdot928s4vrdotcom for some interesting option code reading.Revised 18-NOV-2010:Some questions have been asked, here are some answers: Tires/rims: Kumho Ecsta SPT 295/30 ZR18 rear, Kumho Ecsta SPT 225/40 ZR18 front. Tires in very good shape, less than 3K miles, excellent traction and so far wearing well. I purchased the machine with the BBS rims that are now on it, I do not have the original CS rims. Sound system: Head unit is an Alpine CDA-9847 MP3 CD receiver, removable face. Polk speakers with crossovers all fitted into the original speaker grills. Front door speakers driven by one MB Quart RAA2400 amp. Rear seat speakers driven by a second MB Quart RAA2400 amplifier. 15 inch MB Quart subwoofer (sits in spare tire well, no spare tire or air pump offered) driven by a single MB Quart RAA1000 amplifier. The amplifiers and the subwoofer may be removed without a trace left behind. The system is excellent and there is no sign of it to the outside world to minimize theft. New parts installed unless otherwise noted. Water pump, tensioner rebuilt with new tensioner pivot bolt, new tensioner bearings, timing belt, all accessory belts, ignition cap, ignition rotor, spark plugs, DieHard battery, sensors 1 and 2, thermostat, fuel filter, AC drier (system vacuum evacuated and recharged with R12), all heater hoses, heater line valve for cabin replaced with manual brass valve, radiator upper and lower hoses, radiator flushed cleaned pressure tested by Oakridge Radiator SJ (juiced with Dexcool), brake pads, brake (and clutch) fluids flushed (uses Motul 5.1). Ford motor mounts (engine lift tool available if you want it, Wally’s clever design). 55/65W H4 headlight bulbs. Support struts for front hood and rear hatch (4 in total), new rear hatch seal. Rear seat belt rose (L and R) and rear center HVAC louvers are new. New parts that go with the car and yet to be installed, all were purchased as spares and/or future maintenance items: spark plug wires (OEM), revised clutch throwout arm that will be necessary when the throwout bearing is replaced eventually (currently the clutch is fine), crankshaft lock tool, roughly 6 square yards of original Sliver knit linen colored interior carpet (two interior panels either side of center console have got new carpet). Non-stock not so far mentioned: Radiator flaps and both mini-computers that control the flaps and electric cooling fan speed have been removed. Cooling fan speed controlled by a simple toggle switch located above the driver’s right knee (the knick knack tray on the drivers side is removed). Fan speeds are: off, 50%, 100%. When the ignition key is out the fans are relayed off. The door chime relay has been removed, it comes with the car if you really like door chimes. Sundry stuff. Tool kit is complete except missing the sunroof manual close tool, includes jack. One of the rear quarter windows does not have the external black metal trim pieces installed. I have two of the corner pieces but not the longer strips of painted trim (pieces available from 928 Intl). Is stored covered by, and ships with, an indoor dust cover. Ships with the radio antenna, screws off by hand for placement of the car cover. The passenger side window tint is marred by the pad located in the door that guides the window as it moves up and down. The window tint is way too dark and should be replaced anyway, but be sure and replace the guide pad at the same time.
