Mechanically & Cosmetically Refurbished ___________________________________________ NOTE: Our listings sometimes get rather lengthy. However, we continually hear from out of state / out of country buyers (the majority of our clients) that they prefer the level of detail that we provide. However, if you are not prepared to read multiple pages of description, we ask that you review the "Specifications" on the car along with viewing the photos. Also, if you'd prefer, please call us at 925-846-1451 and we'll gladly discuss the Datsun Roadster 1600 and answer any questions over the telephone, including about our Buy it Now policies. Yes, the Datsun can be purchased prior to the end of the eBay auction. Again, give us a call for details. Finally, all our photos are taken in a completely natural setting with no artificial lighting or gimmicks. We take considerable pride in our presentation and absolutely NO retouching or "Photoshop" work is performed on any of the photos contained in our eBay listing or Website! THANK YOU! CLASSIC CARS LTD. DATSUN FAIRLADY / 1600 HISTORY When the Datsun Fairlady was first introduced at the Tokyo Auto Show in 1961 the slogan "The quality-minded sport car for the economy-minded people" was used for advertising / promotion of the car. Initially, the Fairlady was introduced to the public as a concept car (1961) but not as a production model until 1965. Production volume of the 1600 from 1965 to 67 was 10,400 cars. By automobile production standards, a very low volume of cars. In 1968 the cars received taller, less attractive windshields due to USA federal requirements. As a result, many regard the 1967 model and the most desirable of the Datsun Roadsters. The engine for the Datsun Roadster is a 96hp 1600cc (thus the name 1600) overhead valve straight 4. The engine was mated to a 4-speed transmission and the cars were fitted with disc brakes. In many markets including the USA, Datsun sports cars were known as Fairlady. These were a series of roadsters produced in the 1960's and a predecessor to the Z car. The series designation for the Fairlady's included S212, S213, SP310, SP311, and SRL311. In 1965 a 96 horsepower engine was introduced and continued in production until mid-1970. This 1.6 liter power-plant meant the name of the 1500 Roadster was changed to the 1600, SP311, to reflect the new engine displacement size. Datsun Roadsters proved to be competitive road racing cars and Datsun successfully created a sporty image for the reasonably priced 2-seater. Later Datsun Roadster's were raced in the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) D-Production class where it had very consistent strong finishes. Paul Newman was one of the more famous of the drivers to pilot the car. Production of the Datsun Roadster (2000 by that time) ceased in 1970 when Datsun introduced its successor, the Datsun 240-Z. Many Datsun Roadster enthusiasts missed the "open air" Datsun Roadsters and the cars have a strong following today. THIS PARTICULAR DATSUN - HISTORY This particular Datsun meets virtually all of the requirements that we look for in a classic sports car. Specifically, the car has had limited long term ownership (the most recent owner having owned the car for over ~24 years!), it was delivered and has spent its entire life in California, has had recent significant mechanical and cosmetic work and it is even finished in one of the best colors for a Roadster.red! The car runs and drives as it should and, perhaps most important, is a dry, rust free California car. The Datsun Roadster was restored by its mechanically competent owner (a high school shop teacher) with originality in mind and the car escaped any major modifications. It retains its original steering wheel, dash and the body has not been altered in any way. The only noticeable changes to the Datsun are "period" upgraded slotted alloy wheels that were so very popular in the 1960's / 1970's and a roll bar for safety (or course, the car was never raced or abused). Finally, the car comes with the highly sought after "porthole" hardtop and a new convertible top. The following supporting documents are important when it comes to the history of the Datsun: ? The Datsun engine number (R-16549) matches the Identification plate in the engine bay making this Datsun Roadster a "matching numbers" example ? The car retains the old California pink slip (small, square version) ? The title shows a purchase date by the most recent owner of 4/29/86 documenting its ownership for ~24 years ? The "1600" is fitted with its originally issued, correct black & gold license plate ? The original Owner's Manual is Included ? Includes the original factory jack and spare tire, lug wrench and tire iron CONDITION SUMMARY - EXTERIOR Cosmetically, the car is very attractive. Approximately 4 years ago the car received a complete re-paint in its original factory red color. The paint is excellent with no signs of orange peel, runs, damage or overspray. The trim was removed to prepare and re-paint the car and, as a result, there is no overspray. The trunk and engine bay retain their original paint as evidence to the original color of the car and both areas are in very nice original condition, free from rust and tidy. At the time of the re-spray, many of the exterior parts were re-chromed (including bumpers and other major parts) or replaced with NOS (New Old Stock) components. Bumpers, headlight trim rings, turn signal housings and virtually all of the other exterior parts are in beautiful condition. When it comes to the exterior of the Datsun Roadster the following represent some important considerations: * Original California car - No chassis / body rust (refer to photos of body and undercarriage) * Recent re-spray in factory (paint code sticker remains on underside of hood) original red Note: Entire trunk area and door jambs re-painted with trim, door seals removed / replaced * Beautiful exterior chrome & trim * New exterior "rubbers" / window trim * No damage to windshield / glass and windows roll up / down * Trim removed and replaced during quality repaint COSMETIC SUMMARY - INTERIOR & CONVERTIBLE TOP The photographs accurately reflect the beauty and originality of the car's interior. It is one of the more original, complete examples of the Fairlady that we have had the pleasure of owning. The Datsun retains its original factory steering wheel, radio, seats, door panels, instruments and many other factory original components. During the cars refurbishment, the dash was replaced and many of the interior items were upgraded. A roll bar was added for safety but the car has never been raced or abused by its mature owner of over 24 years. The carpeting is older but serviceable and free from signs of significant damage / wear. The rear cargo area of the Datsun has been "recovered" with material to improve its appearance but underneath the covering is the original vinyl padded material. One of the rear side panels is of the car (but included) and could stand to be recovered. The center console is in nice condition and free from any damage. The dash is also all original and has not been re-painted or changed with the exception of the new dash pad. The chrome factory rear view mirror was not re-installed on the dash but is included (it needs a mirror fitted). As an alternative, a rear view mirror could be affixed to the inside windshield or the "rod." The radio that came in the car when new is in place though it has not worked for some time. The Datsun Roadster comes with a brand new top and the original (old and ugly) top that is fitted to the top bows (that have been removed from the car). The top can easily be installed by any capable upholstery shop in your area but, here in California, as the saying goes. "We don't need no stinkin' top"!! The gauges are fully functional with the exception of the oil pressure gauge in the dash (original item). However, it has been replaced with a period style below dash oil pressure gauge that displays accurate and excellent oil pressure. On our most recent drive in the Datsun the oil pressure read 60 lbs, an excellent reading and supportive of the cars relatively recent engine / mechanical rebuild. All of the other gauges are functional with the exception of the odometer (speedometer has and continues to work fine) that is "stuck" at 60,099. However, the Datsun has, according to its long term owner, been used only for the occasional weekend drive since the major rebuild. Please refer to "Mechanical Condition" for additional specific information. MECHANICAL CONDITION - SUMMARY Mechanically, the Datsun is very strong, indeed. The owner reports that within 7,500~ miles, the Datsun has had a completely rebuilt engine, transmission and rear end (differential). This included replacement of related components like the clutch master cylinder and the clutch slave cylinder. Also, the brakes and tires have just been replaced (within about 4,000 miles). The steering is excellent and the recent repairs to the braking system stop the Datsun straight and sure. All of the electrical systems are fully functional including headlights, turn-signals, brake lights, high beams and even dash lights. Within the past 100 miles the car passed the required California safety inspection with no findings. The Datsun runs and drives extremely well. The car starts immediately with its manual choke and warms up almost immediately. The car has excellent oil pressure, does not leak significant fluids and runs cool under all operating conditions. The car has very good power, does not smoke and the engine is free from any unusual noises / issues. Frankly, driving the car is a pleasure. The major mechanical components are very strong and the clutch engages properly and without chatter or fuss. There is no slippage and the syncromesh gears are fully functional. There is no noise in the drive-line and it is apparent that the car has not only been well cared for but that it has received recent and regular maintenance. Having been recently re-done (including many new components for front & rear brakes), the car stops straight and sure. The emergency brake is fully functional. The following is a summary of the car from a mechanical perspective: * Original numbers correct / matching engine * Clean, original engine bay * Factory 4-speed transmission * Rebuilt engine, transmission & rear end * New clutch master & slave cylinder * Excellent oil pressure * Runs cool under all conditions * Recently rebuilt braking system * Recent tires SUMMARY We regularly see Datsun Fairlady's listed for sale but it is rare to find an example that is in this condition. The car is not only an unusually rust free example of an original, documented California car, it is also a car that has been owned by one owner for 24+ years and has received a complete refurbishment of its major components during the past few thousand miles. The Datsun 1600 (Fairlady) represents an excellent value and is sought after by many sports car enthusiasts, many of who believe that the 1967 "short window" is the car to have. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
