Doesn't bust the budget. This blistering quick Porsche is everything the original Karmann 2-seater should have been and a whole lot more. Weekend racers and hot-rodders (of a very different stripe) have long recognized the type 47 Porsche as an ideal platform on which to build a fast car. In factory form, the 914 possessed superb handling and could carry speeds in a corner, almost beyond belief. Even with its lack of real muscle, the mid-engine, sub 2,000 pound Targa made the most of its as-delivered squirt but, there's only so much 100 horsepower (or less) can do and a car as good as the 914 deserves better. Temperamental V8-pendectomies, ugly body mods and complex backyard jiggery are at the extreme end of the 914 conversion universe and a mild Porsche six cylinder transplant seems hardly worth the expense. Perfect solution; one extremely reliable 3.0 liter Nissan V6 and the well engineered Kennedy conversion kit. This VG30 is a SOHC factory crate engine with a cast iron block and aluminum heads. It has a Weber 32/36 DGAV carburetor, MSD electronic ignition, headers and throaty sounding Flowmaster "Hushpower" mufflers. Along with the mounts and adapter plate, the kit also includes a high performance clutch and pressure plate assembly. What it also has is unbelievable acceleration, of the "holy crap" variety. It is a thoughtful transformation that includes a 12 x 24 inch radiator tucked away nicely in the front trunk with two 12-inch thermostatically controlled Toyota electric cooling fans. The original 914 heater (long a weakness in these cars) is here replaced with a traditional heater core, with hoses all plumbed and routed so that when you turn the black knob under the dash, actual warm air blows out. Everything awesome about the original 914 is still here. The MacPherson strut front suspension, (taken virtually intact from the 911) the durable 5-speed, 4-wheel disc brakes and flat cornering prowess can all now be fully appreciated with this large infusion of thrust. It works so well in fact, you'll wonder why people go to the trouble of stuffing a V8 in one of these. The fat torque curve, eagerness to spin up some real RPMs and bullet proof dependability has transformed this half-breed kraut can into a true thoroughbred. This V6 by the way, is the real deal. This exact engine, stock block, crank and same early SOHC heads, powered the GTP Nissan to three IMSA championships in a row. Parts and service will never be an issue because millions of VG30 engines were installed in everything from Hardbody pickups to twin-turbo ZXs, from the 80s right up to 2004. This car rips through the lower gears so blindingly fast, you'll almost feel sorry for the hapless Mustang driver in the next lane as he watches in stunned disbelief, a little silver Porsche disappear in front of him. A single breathtaking experience behind the wheel of this incredible 1974 Porsche 914-slash-Nissan V6-slash-GT-Z-or-whatever-you-wanna-call-it, and you will understand why it was Motor Trend's Car of the Year in 1970. Imagine how well it might have done with this engine behind the seats. Bottom line: This Porsche goes (real) fast without breaking the bank. Great rubber and the body is pretty nice too. Finally, a 914 that goes as fast as it looks. Halogen driving lights hide behind smoked lenses and 2 intakes feed air to the radiator. The hidden headlights work perfectly, by the way. When these were new, Porsche used to say, "if you don't have a back seat, at least get an engine in its place." (the engine is still there in this car, it's just bigger now) Pretty nice looking body and paint on this bad boy. This 914 is not quite 4-feet tall at its highest point. It's low, wide and perfectly balanced. Targa top comes off in seconds and stores securely in rear trunk. Both seats move fore and aft and are height adjustable. Momo Corse racing steering wheel, gauge set and Sony Drive-S CD stereo makes this a nice place for two people. VG30 Nissan 3.0 liter SOHC V6 crate engine with Weber carburetor, headers and Flowmaster exhaust. Engine installed with a Kennedy conversion kit that includes the adapter plate, mounts and high performance clutch/pressure plate. Cooling is handled with a 24 x 12 radiator and 2 Toyota 12-inch fans. (MSD electronic ignition can also be seen here) Plenty of room for your stuff back here - and it locks too. Uncluttered conversion has the radiator lines covered and protected. The Kennedy conversion kit makes it look almost like a factory installation.
