The car was designed by Battista Pininfarina, founder of the Turin based design house, and designer of a wide range of Italian exotic automobiles. Over the years, numerous changes were made to the car, and the styling remained very pleasing even in light of increased requirements for stronger bumpers, and safety equipment. The mid-1980's brought the square tailed cars with front chin spoilers, subtle rear trunk lip spoilers and larger side view mirrors. Unlike some of the other European sports cars, the lines of the Alfa matured very gracefully, until the end of the production of the Alfa Spider in 1993. Early Alfa Spider's were equipped with 1600 twin cam engines which were later increased in size to two-liter, fuel injected versions. The larger, current engines, proved to be very reliable, and offered excellent drivability, torque, and good overall performance for a small convertible. This particular 1993 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce is equipped with the considerably more desirable features including the following: * 2.0 Liter (1962cc) Twin Overhead Cam Engine * Fuel Injected Engine * 5-Speed, Fully Synchronized Transmission * Electronic Ignition * Independent Front Suspension * Front Anti Sway Bar * Power Assisted 4-Wheel Disc Brakes * Steel Belted Radial Tires * Air Conditioning * Power Windows * Beautiful Black Leather Interior * Adjustable Head Rests * Electronic Tachometer * Water Temperature, Oil Pressure & Voltmeter Gauges * Padded 4 Spoke Sport Steering Wheel * Driver's Side Air Bag * 2 Speed Electronic Washer/Wipers * Dual Side View Mirrors * 50 State Version - Catalyst System * Locking Vent Windows * Day/Night Rear View Mirror * Tinted Glass * Striking Factory Spider Alloy Wheels The last body style of the Alfa Spider Veloce is considered by many to be the "Best of the Best", in Alfa Romeo convertibles. They are comfortable, fun to drive, and offer very attractive styling, at an affordable price. Unlike many of the earlier British roadsters, the Alfa's offered increased refinement, performance, and reliability, as well. They also came with improved "creature comforts" including air conditioning, power windows, nice sound systems, power steering and beautiful interiors. "Opening up" the car to the sky above is simply a matter of undoing (from the driver's seat) the two latches from the windshield area, and pushing it back to the rear storage area. Instant convertible! Considering their size, the Alfa Spider even offered ample trunk space for those long weekends on the coast, or to your favorite holiday destination. By 1993 the Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce carried a sticker price of $25,473 and the delivered price to the cars new owner would have approached the $30,000 mark (Note: these cars carried a premium and many were delivered with pricing mark-ups over retail). Needless to say, this represented a very costly vehicle "in the day." MECHANICAL SUMMARY * Very Well Maintained by Two Mature Owners * Alfa Romeo Maintenance Booklet Stamped with Original California Owner and Maintenance * Extremely strong mechanical components/excellent driving Alfa * Excellent Oil Pressure, Water Temperature and Charging Readings * NO Issues with Engine Performance / Operation * Perfect Transmission with NO 2nd Gear Syncromesh Issues / Problems (Can be downshifted into second gear at higher speeds unlike many Alfa's) * Maintenance & Upgrade History Included IMPROVEMENTS / UPGRADES * High Quality Canvas Top Recently Replaced ($1,300.00~) * High Quality, Matching Dunlop Tires within a Few Hundred Miles * New Quality Ansa Exhaust (Center & Rear Sections) from mid-section back, not just exhaust tip) ($700.00~) * New Exhaust Gaskets * Frame Strengthening Added Making an Incredible Difference in the Drivability and Handling of the Car (Professionally installed at a cost of over $1,200.00~) * Replacement Driveshaft and other Bushings * Inner & Outer Wheel Bearings ($290.00~) * Replacement of Motor Mounts ($900.00~) * Complete Major Tune-Up Completed Within the Previous Few Thousand Miles ($780.00~) * New Hoses, Belts and K&N Air Cleaner (Smog legal) ($250.00~) This particular Alfa Romeo Spider is truly the best driving example of a late model Spider Veloce that we have owned. The engine is strong, does not smoke or exhibit any problems. The suspension is very tight, the brakes stop the car straight and sure and the additional chassis strengthening makes a noticeable difference in the tightness of the car and in eliminating the "cowl Shake" that can exist in the Spider. The upgraded Ansa exhaust emits a lovely, but not overly noisy / offensive note. The car is absolutely striking and is finished in what is arguably the most sought after color combination of red with tan leather / suede interior. The body is very straight and the paint is high gloss. The previous owner indicated that the front bumper has been re-painted but it matches very well. There are only a few minor stone chips on the front of the car that require a close, critical inspection to be noticed. The panel fit is excellent and the doors, hood and trunk close solidly and securely. The rubber seals are excellent as is the exterior trim. The engine bay is immaculate and the photos tell the story. The engine has received new hoses, tune-up and regular oil service to keep it in excellent running condition. The transmission is as good as any that we have had with no issues up shifting and down shifting and absolutely NO 2nd gear syncromesh problems up or down. The trunk is immaculate and 100% dry and free from signs of damage. The carpet is perfect and the original spare (with Pirelli tire) is in place in the totally rust free tire well. The jack and tools remain unused and properly stored. The car has brand new Dunlop tires (4 matching) fitted to factory alloy wheels that are in gorgeous condition and free from damage or fading / problems. We ask that you review the photographs and let us know if you have any specific questions regarding this rare, late model Alfa Spider. ENGINE & MECHANICAL COMPONENTS The Alfa Spider runs and drives beautifully. The car has always passed California strict smog tests. The Alfa carries a clear transferrable title that is free from liens or encumbrances. The Owner's Maintenance Booklet supports the cars original delivery in California including the original dealer delivery stamp when the car was delivered to Redondo Beach, CA and the initial service stamps. Since its delivery, the Alfa has only been driven just over 53,000 miles and the Car Fax independent report supports the accuracy of the mileage. This is a "no excuses example" with no "tales" relative to any speedometer / odometer history or questionable mileage. The mileage is chronologically documented. The first owner of the Alfa cherished the Spider for more than 16 years and then, it was sold to its most recent owner. It is important to note that while the Car Fax report shows that the car was in California during its most recent owner's possession and did not leave California. However, the owner had a residence and office in Chicago so a Chicago address was used for mailing documents, thus the reference to "Chicago" on the title. Again, the Car Fax shows the car was in California and it never went to Chicago with its owner but remained under cover in a garage in Northern California. During the previous several years the Alfa only accumulated approximately 5,000 miles and it received considerable upgrades (detailed above) to keep it in excellent condition. The oil services were performed based on time not mileage due to the limited use of the Alfa. While all receipts were not retained by the owner, the car reflects excellent care and runs and drives as an Alfa should. Specifically, the oil was changed every 1,000 miles and was last completed within approximately 300 miles. When we received the car, as part of its inspection we have had a complete oil service (oil, filter, fluid checks, etc.) performed. This service was completed within the previous 50 miles. So, the car will not require any service for some time. When it comes to drivability, this particular Alfa is as good as it gets. If you are interested in owning the last of the 1993 Alfa Romeo Spider's and want an excellent, high quality car to use and drive, this is definitely a car to consider. The car drives like a new Alfa and is truly a time warp. It is incredibly fun to drive and does not exhibit any problems. The car starts immediately when cold and hot, and runs cool, even in warm California temperatures. The battery is excellent and, as a result of the fuel injection, starts the car on the first attempt. The engine is very strong and does not smoke, leak fluids, or exhibit any drivability problems what so ever. The Alfa idles smoothly at just below 1000 rpm, does not hesitate, and pulls strongly through the gears and, in typical Alfa fashion, has a wonderful exhaust note. As a result of the 5-speed transmission, the car can be driven easily at highway speeds with absolutely no problem. The characteristically weak 2nd gear syncromesh shows absolutely NO weakness in this Alfa. The Alfa can easily be down shifted from 3rd gear to 2nd gear at speed, unlike other Alfa Romeo cars that demonstrate weak 2nd gear syncros when this is attempted. Reverse gear engages smoothly, unlike many of the Alfa's that we have driven/owned. Of course, the car absolutely never pops out of reverse or forward gear, and does not have any transmission, rear end noise. We attribute the strength of the transmission to the car having been under the ownership of an enthusiast that did not abuse the car and knew how to drive it. There is NO noise in the driveline and the clutch engages properly and without slippage, chattering or fuss. The car steers straight and sure, the brakes work well and stop the car without any pulling, squeaking or noise. The emergency brake is fully functional. The spare tire is the original and the spare tire well is 100% free from any signs of rust or moisture, only the normal accumulation of surface dirt. The trunk is extremely clean and the factory jack is in place. The spare wheel is free from the usual major "scuffing" that we see and only has signs of minor "rubbing" from the spare tire mat. It is fitted with the original Pirelli tire. The wheels on the car ("Phone Dial') are generally very good and virtually free from "curbing" or scratches. We have owned over 30+ Alfa's during the past 25 years and can say with confidence that is one of the best examples of a later model Alfa Spider Veloce that we have had the pleasure of owning. Remember.Alfa is returning to the USA and these cars are bound to increase in value. MISCELLANEOUS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) 1. Has it received a safety / light inspection? Yes, the car has been checked for turn signals, brake lights, and license plate lights. 2. What is the total mileage on the Alfa? The odometer currently shows 53,854 and based on the records, there appears to be chronological documentation that the miles are correct. Also, and perhaps most important, the Car Fax report supports the accuracy of the mileage. 3. Was the work completed by professionals? Yes, all of the mechanical work was done professionally, and to a high standard. No backyard or "Do it yourself" mechanic has worked on this Alfa Romeo Spider. 4. What were the results of the independent inspection? The Alfa passed with no problem and no safety issues were identified. 5. What are the cars needs (if any) at this time? The vehicle is in very nice cosmetic condition and, as we have indicated, runs and drives well. The car has been very well cared for over the years and it shows. Of course, as a 1993 the car shows the typical minor paint chips and imperfections consistent with its age. 6. The air-conditioning, a common problem with all older Alfa's has been checked and is fully functional. While the majority of Spider owner's do not find a use for the A/C, it is refreshing to find an example where it actually works! 7. Does the car have seat belts and air bags? Yes, factory shoulder harnesses (no belts in the rear area). The car is equipped with a driver's side airbag for safety. 8. What is the condition of the convertible top and does the frame work function well. The convertible is absolutely beautiful, free from any damage or flaws having been changed and upgraded to an even higher quality than stock, canvas top. The window is perfectly clear and the car was always stored with the top in the up position, covered with a car cover in the garage. 9. Can we have the vehicle inspected? Absolutely, we encourage inspections of this Alfa by serious, qualified individuals, or professional inspection companies. All we ask is that you call us at 925-846-1451 to arrange a convenient time since we are in and out of our offices quite a bit. We are unable to allow inspections 24 hours prior to the end of the auction as we are closed on Sunday. 10. Can you provide some "ballpark" costs of shipping costs around the United States? Yes, on a fully insured, ENCLOSED carrier (we do not recommend the more common "open" transporters for a car of this caliber) and delivered to your door, about $1500.00 for most of the East Coast, $1300.00 to some of the Southern States, and around $1000 to points in the Midwest. The cost to Los Angeles would be in the area of $500.00. PLEASE check with us as these are just estimates, NOT firm shipping costs, and rates are changing regularly due to fuel costs, exact locations, and other factors. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
