Vehicle Detail
1991 BMW R100RT Top of the line BMW touring machine. I acquired this bike from a WA State resident who purchased it from an estate. With the help of all parties, we tracked down an engine rebuild completed by San Jose BMW in California at 108,770 miles costing $5277 in May 2005. Thus, the bike had only 5,000 miles on a completely rebuilt motor. Cylinder compressions were 148/150. Brand new BMW mufflers were installed with rear air suspension. On the basis of this information I bought the bike and brought it into Canada. Within the first 100 miles of touring with the bike, it was evident that something was wrong with the transmission. I drained the fluids to find metal particles. I'm a member of Airheads Beemer Club and I contacted their Technical Director, Oak Oklehshen who advised me of the dreaded "transmission circlip problem" for beemers of this vintage. Apparently, BMW replaced many a transmission around 50,000 miles under warranty as they litterly blew up on the highway. The transmission was finished in July 2010 - that cost me $775. I checked the clutch and it had lots of meat on it. The bike's starter had weird noises coming from it and Oak told me it was a cheap Taiwan import starter whose magnets probably fell off and recommended getting the best starter - a $375 Nippon Denso. The previous owner stated that he put in a new battery and brand new Metzler tires. I acquired a rear drive unit, which I am including in the sale, that has only 22,000 miles on it. Then I decided to replace the scratched up windscreen with a brand new one for $300. Essentially, this bike is nearly brand new. 5000 miles on the motor, 130 miles on its transmission, 500 miles on the tires and a final drive you can install whenever you want that has only 22,000 miles on it. I've rode BMWs all my life and I wouldn't hesitate going cross the USA with this bike in the shape it is right now. Its really comfortable with the Corbin Touring seat and the bags hold enough for two-up touring. I wanted to keep this RT but I'm selling another show bike, a mint 1973 Triumph Bonneville, that I don't think I'm going to get near what I was hoping to get. I have another project/show bike that I want to finish for this upcoming season to enter competition showings and plain just need the extra cash to finish it off right. The bike is located in Hope, BC but I am listing it as Sumas, WA 98295 as this is the point where I will deliver the bike to a freight broker called Ship Happens who can then ship the bike anywhere in continental USA via Buyer arrangements with DHS or Haul Bike. Ship Happens (360-988-8100) can store the bike until the truck arrives for $25/week. I am pricing the RT aggressively, yet very reasonable. Somebody is going to get a really great deal on a beemer thats going to run the next 50,000 miles free of any mechanical concerns.
