Saying a Tacoma is reliable is akin to acknowledging the Pacific Ocean as being wet. Among first generation Tacomas (many with upwards of a quarter-million miles) this two owner, low mileage PreRunner is still wet behind the ears with its digital odometer showing 94,415. Most owners of these rugged pickups would call that "just broke-in." Indeed, any eleven year old truck that has averaged less than 9,000 miles a year since new can be called low mileage with little argument but that's not all this Xtra-Cab, TRD equipped "Taco" has going for it. Purchased new here in Las Vegas, extensive service records from Findlay Toyota and Fletcher Jones Toyota indicate a lot of attention to maintenance and a spotless CarFax confirms frequent visits to the dealer for oil changes. No accident history of any kind and in fact, you can walk around this cream-puff until long after dinner with the kids finally asleep and you still will not see any evidence that anything ever touched this truck. The paint is original and shiny, the glass looks brand new and the trim is not sun-bleached or damaged in any way. The interior is so spectacular you wonder how eleven years can pass without something looking old. Okay nit-pickers; you want something to crab about? There are two tiny threads hanging loose on the edge of the driver's seat. But, when you (and everybody else) see the engine bay and undercarriage, the gentlemanly competition to have this ride will likely descend into an ugly, white trash yard-brawl. It couldn't have been this clean and dry the day it was built which, incidentally, was May 10, 1999 at Toyota's NUMMI plant in Fremont, California. (if that kind of thing matters to you) There's no other way to describe it; the chassis and drive train on this gem look absolutely brand-spankin'-new. Fire it up. The 3.4 liter V6 starts instantly and has the kind of low end grunt a truck like this needs. As you probably already guessed, it tracks down the road like new, stops like new, turns like new and every functional accessory functions like . . . new, I guess you could say. You saw the tonneau cover right? It locks snug, looks cool and of course this Tacoma has power windows, locks, tilt, cruise, ice-cold air, sliding rear window, privacy glass, CD/stereo, dual airbags, pretensioners, storage bins and cup holders up the wazoo. What it also has is a pretty slick off-road package that's a whole lot more than just stickers on the side. This PreRunner has Toyota's well recognized TRD package and it's the closest a 2-wheel drive ever came to performing like a 4-wheel drive. First, the whole works is treated to a nice lift and shod with beefy 31 inch off-road radials. The stock rear leaf/front coils are swapped out for a set of progressive rate springs that include also, four Bilstein gas-charged shocks. Out back, the 3.91 axle can be electronically locked with the simple push of a button on the dash. The importance of this often overlooked feature in off-roading can't be overstated. In the dirt or snow, one wheel doing nothing on dry pavement while the other spins uselessly in the wet stuff gets old in a hurry. Enter Toyota's locking differential. Push the button on your left that says "RR DIF LOCK" wait a few blinks and suddenly, both wheels are doing their share to get you on your way. Believe me, once you experience it, you'll wonder why all trucks don't have this. So, after this slick dog-and-pony show proving this 1999 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Xtra-Cab V6 PreRunner TRD is the best thing since sliced bread, you have to ask yourself; is it reliable and will this be the smartest vehicle purchase of my lifetime? This PreRunner was purchased new locally and factory serviced locally with extensive records to prove it. Spotless CarFax is as clean and straight as the spectacularly straight view down the side. Toyota calls these headlamps "aero composite." Pretty fancy, hunh? 31 inch Michelin off-road radials have years of tread left. The front skid plate can be seen here that protects the radiator/engine/transmission. Also, check out the Bilstein gas charged shocks, part of the TRD suspension system. Go ahead; walk around it again, there won't be a single door ding or noticeable dent to be found on that trip around either. The black wheel lip moldings (Toyota calls them "overfenders") are part of the TRD deal as are those completely beautiful alloy wheels. You get mud flaps at both ends, chrome door handles/grille/bumpers and a really cool sticker on the back. Top Deck fiberglass tonneau cover locks on both sides and we bought brand new shocks so it'll stay open now. What you can't see here is the electronically locking 3.91 rear axle, stainless steel exhaust and two more Bilstein gas charged shocks to match the front. This truck has averaged less than 9,000 miles a year since new but it looks (and functions) like it is new. Straight under here too and you simply will not find a loaded Tacoma in this close to new condition, anywhere at any price. Fuel door locks and it has rear "privacy glass," in case you want to do something back there requiring privacy. 3.4 Liter DOHC Sequential Multi Point Fuel Injection 190hp @ 4,800 and 220 lb-ft torque @ 3,600 RPM (it's almost sterile in here, it's so clean) Cloth "Oak" interior is stupendous. (not stupid but very pendous) Both seats recline and you get power windows, locks, tilt, cruise, air and a bunch more really cool stuff there's not room enough here to mention. With only 94,415 documented miles, this "Taco is still a pup. (these bad boys commonly travel well past a quarter million miles) The newest looking undercarriage you will ever see on an 11 year old truck. (actually, a new truck might not look this good but it sure will cost more) Full size spare is brand new and has never touched the ground.
