Vehicle Detail
1981 Chevrolet Corvette L81 350 V8, Automatic Transmission I have a 1981 Chevrolet Corvette up for auction that has 45,604 original miles on the odometer. I have owned this Corvette since June 15, 2007 and it is always garage kept and never driven in inclement weather. I have only put 2,159 miles on the car since I purchased it in 2007. The previous owner also kept the car out of the weather and in a garage. The car has silver over charcoal two tone paint with the red and orange accent stripe. The paint is in very good condition and has a nice shine. There are no noticeable dings on the body, only small scratches here and there that you have to look for. The frame is solid with no rust issues. The car appears to be a “no hit” body and the CarFax that I received when I bought the car was clear. The car has power windows, power door locks, power mirrors and cruise control. The previous owner told me he had a Chevrolet dealership disconnect the alarm system and the power door locks. I do not know the reason why he would do this. The air conditioner has been upgraded to R4. The car has Monza style mufflers installed and they sound pretty good. The chrome exhaust tips are in great condition. The car gets looks everywhere I drive it! The interior of the car is dark red in color and is in fair to good condition with the following new equipment installed, (all items were purchased from Eckler’s by me on 9/4/2007): · Factory style steering wheel ($229.99) · Matching red floor mats ($99.99) · Console shift plate ($59.99) · Leather factory style shift boot ($25.99) · Emergency brake housing ($37.99) · Trim piece above the windshield ($54.99) · Passenger side sun visor ($42.99) · Cup holder ($29.99) · Interior door escutcheon for driver and passenger side ($32.99) I have the receipts for all of the above listed items. The carpet has a small tear in the middle located behind the seats but is otherwise in good condition. There are no rips or tears in the factory leather seats. The button for the battery compartment has a broken latch but still functions. The t-tops on this car are tinted glass and are in excellent condition. They also have excellent weather stripping. The tops come with two black leather/vinyl storage bags that are in like new condition. The car has an original style eight track am/fm stereo installed that works! I will give the new owner all of the eight track tapes that I have. This car originally came with an eight track am/fm stereo according to the build sheet. As previously stated, the paint on this car is exceptional. The wheels are factory polished aluminum with aftermarket center caps. I do have the original center caps that will go with the car. The wheels are in great condition. The tires are raised white letter Goodyear Eagle GT II’s, P225 70R15 with great tread wear left. The car has four wheel disc brakes. I have recently replaced the driver’s side rear caliper with a new one due to leakage. The brakes work fine but they probably could use a professional bleed to make the pedal a little more firm. I have driven the car without any problems since I replaced the caliper. Mechanical: This Corvette has the original drive train with the numbers matching 350 cubic inch engine and the 350 turbo automatic transmission. The car runs good and does not burn any oil (no smoke). The transmission shifts smoothly with no slippage. The vacuum controlled headlights work perfectly. They go up and down every time. I had began the process of removing some of the smog equipment from the car but everything that has been removed has been kept. My plans were to install side pipes and, I will do this if I keep the car. Known Problems: The windshield wipers do not work correctly. They will come on but sometimes they will stop working. I have not looked into this problem because I never drive the car in the rain. However, I have been caught by a spring shower and that is how I found out about the wipers not working. About a year ago the air conditioning system stopped working correctly. No air will blow out of the upper vents only the lower vents. It will also need to be recharged because it does not blow as cold as it should. The tilt steering column can be pushed down without the lever being pulled sometimes. I had this same problem on a Camaro I owned in the 80’s and took it to the dealership to be repaired. I may attempt to fix this myself if the car does not sell. By the way, I have only had the steering wheel move without the lever being pulled once since I have owned the car. I also have the following items that will be going with the car: Shop Manual $89.99 Owner’s Manual Reproduction of window sticker Reproduction of build sheet Die cast Eckler’s valve covers $209.99 (off the car) New spark plugs in the box New spark plug wires in the box New transmission filter kit in the box Windshield wiper compartment cover $49.99 (on the car) This is a nice car and will be a great starter Vette for someone who wants to buy their first one! I do not owe anything on this car and I have the title in hand so I am not hurting to let it go. I will not give the car away. Happy bidding!
