There are, in fact, cars with 10,000 miles that look older than this cream puff. The thing is, cream puff is hardly the right term for a car with the explosive, neurotic performance of this S2000. Within the usual 2,000 to 4,000 RPM range most normal people rev their cars to, this convertible goes to the mall about as drama-free as your daughter-in-law's Civic. Light the electronic tachometer past 6,000 RPM however and the reliable Honda we all know and love morphs instantly into a snarling, salivating predator looking for a mid-morning snack; say, a Miata before lunch or a cock-sure kid in a Mustang GT accustomed to having his way with tuner imports. Savvy Mustang owners with a clue (and even a few Camaros) know better than to tangle with an S2000, especially from a roll. That's because even bone stock, the 240 horsepower 2 liter VTEC engine gives the featherweight Honda a power-to-weight ratio on par with a Z28 and with handling that will put any Pony to shame. This is essentially a Formula One race car with good manners and an ice-cold air conditioner. But don't let the great stereo and power windows fool you; this is a race car, right down to its monocoque frame and double wishbone suspension. With cornering limits this high (.90g) there simply is nothing this side of a Lotus Elise that can hang with you in the twisties and as long as you keep it on the boil (remember, Mr. Hyde doesn't begin laughing maniacally until 6 grand) you're going to rocket out of the corners ala ICBM. Alright, already, so it's scary fast. Has it been treated like a stolen vehicle its whole life, you may be wondering. I've walked around this Honda a hundred times and it's been my daily driver for about a month now and I can tell you honestly that it is very, very close to a new car in appearance and function, inside and out, top to bottom. After about a week I finally noticed the only dimple the body has; a quarter BB sized poke just behind the passenger door and I dare you to find a single curb scrape on any wheel. The only curb rash to see if you jump down on the ground will be on the low chin up front; and it too is minor to the norm. It's just as incredible inside, too. Unbelievable, actually. Even a well cared for car shows some signs of use but this interior appears hardly sat in. There is not a rip, tear, fade or blemish to be found anywhere and now that you're convinced that a., this car is near flawless and b., you need to own it, there are a few things about this particular ride you need to know. In addition to its spectacular CarFax, showing a cult-like commitment to factory service, your "new" Silverstone Metallic bullet sports a new HKS Hi-Power cat-back dual exhaust system. This expensive mod looks almost as intimidating as it sounds and while we're back here let's acknowledge the Cusco lower frame brace and trunk brace too. There's another one upfront underneath as well and there is also an ARC titanium strut tower bar so, you know your Honda is going to stay stiff. And, part of the reason this screaming S2000 has such a vicious howl is courtesy a beautiful ARC Super Induction Box and Intake Chamber. This pricey plumbing will have you popping the hood to take in the superb view of this superb engine bay at every stop. This 2001 Honda S2000 roadster does indeed, give almost no hint of its 53,102 miles so it's going to be up to you to make sure this insanely fast convertible accumulates the proper mileage for a vehicle of this age.
