1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Absolutely Lovely Two Owner Example Northern California Car with 79,890 Documented Miles!! Absolutely Striking "Ferrari Red" (Rosso) / Tan Leather Interior _______________________ NOTE: Our listings sometimes get rather lengthy. However, we continually hear from out of state / out of country buyers (the majority of our clients) that they prefer the level of detail that we provide. However, if you are not prepared to read multiple pages of description, we recommend that you review the "Specifications" on the car along with viewing the photos. Also, if you'd prefer, please call us at 925-846-1451 and we'll gladly discuss the Alfa Romeo and answer any questions over the telephone, including about our Buy it Now policies. Yes, the Alfa can be purchased prior to the end of the eBay auction. Again, give us a call for details. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: EACH TIME WE LIST A VEHICLE ON EBAY WE RECEIVE COMMENTS THAT THERE ARE NO PHOTOS OF THE INTERIOR, ENGINE, UNDERCARRIAGE, ETC. OF THE CAR. THERE ARE 100 PHOTOS OF ALL AREAS OF THE CAR BUT, WHEN YOU REACH WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE LAST PHOTO, YOU WILL NEED TO SCROLL TO VIEW THE REMAINING PHOTOS. IF YOU ARE STILL UNABLE TO SEE THE PHOTOS, PLEASE CALL US AT 925-846-1451 AND WE WILL PROVIDE A LINK FOR THE PHOTOS (IT IS A VIOLATION OF EBAY POLICY TO LIST THE URL ON THE EBAY LISTING). THANK YOU! CLASSIC CARS LTD. ABOUT THE ALFA ROMEO SPIDER VELOCE The Alfa Romeo Spider was introduced at the 1966 Geneva Motor show, receiving rave reviews. The car was designed by Battista Pininfarina, founder of the Turin based design house, and designer of a wide range of Italian exotic automobiles. Over the years, numerous changes were made to the car, and the styling remained very pleasing even in light of increased requirements for stronger bumpers, and safety equipment. The mid-1980's brought the square tailed cars with front chin spoilers, subtle rear trunk lip spoilers and larger side view mirrors. Unlike some of the other European sports cars, the lines of the Alfa matured very gracefully, until the end of the production of the Alfa Spider in 1993. Early Alfa Spider's were equipped with 1600 twin cam engines which were later increased in size to two-liter, fuel injected versions. The larger, current engines, proved to be very reliable, and offered excellent drivability, torque, and good overall performance for a small convertible. This particular 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce is equipped with the considerably more desirable features including the following: * 2.0 Liter (1962cc) Twin Overhead Cam Engine * Fuel Injected Engine * 5-Speed, Fully Synchronized Transmission * Electronic Ignition * Independent Front Suspension * Front Anti Sway Bar * Power Assisted 4-Wheel Disc Brakes * Steel Belted Radial Tires * Air Conditioning * Power Windows * Beautiful Tan Leather Interior (Re-done in full, Ferrari style leather, not with the suede insets that wears so badly) * Adjustable Head Rests * Electronic Tachometer * Water Temperature, Oil Pressure & Voltmeter Gauges * Padded 4 Spoke Sport Steering Wheel * Driver's Side Air Bag * 2 Speed Electronic Washer/Wipers * Dual Side View Mirrors * 50 State Version - Catalyst System * Locking Vent Windows * Day/Night Rear View Mirror * Tinted Glass * Striking Factory Spider Alloy Wheels The last body style of the Alfa Spider Veloce is considered by many to be the "Best of the Best", in Alfa Romeo convertibles. They are comfortable, fun to drive, and offer very attractive styling, at an affordable price. Unlike many of the earlier British roadsters, the Alfa's offered increased refinement, performance, and reliability, as well. They also came with improved "creature comforts" including air conditioning, power windows, nice sound systems, power steering and beautiful interiors. "Opening up" the car to the sky above is simply a matter of undoing (from the driver's seat) the two latches from the windshield area, and pushing it back to the rear storage area..Instant convertible! Considering their size, the Alfa Spider even offered ample trunk space for those long weekends on the coast, or to your favorite holiday destination. By 1991 the Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce would have had a delivered price of over $24,000. Needless to say, this represented a very costly vehicle "in the day." HISTORY OF THIS LOCAL 1991 ALFA ROMEO VELOCE This car was purchased in the San Francisco Bay Area and has remained here since new. Today, as a result of Internet sales it can be difficult to determine if a particular car is a true, "always in California" example. In this case, both the Car Fax report and the original multi-color title support the cars history and limited ownership. Several years ago, this Alfa Veloce underwent a complete cosmetic restoration by a very particular owner. According to the car's owner, the exterior was completely disassembled to prepare it for a high quality re-paint in the factory correct color. We need to emphasize that the re-paint was not an inexpensive, mass production paint job. Great care was taken to ensure that the paint quality equaled or exceeded the original paint and much of the trim was replaced when the car was reassembled. There is no overspray, the paint is laid totally flat and there are no issues with the paint quality. It is very well done, indeed. At the same time, the entire interior was replaced with high quality leather material on the seating surfaces. The suede insets that always wore prematurely and became a weak point on pre-owned later model Veloce's was replaced with high quality, stitched leather that looks magnificent. The seating surfaces have a lovely patina but remain in very good condition and free from any damage, rips, tears or significant flaws. In this case, the old adage "A picture is worth a thousand words" is accurate. The carpet, sill plates and other interior trim items were also changed and remain in equally good condition. The dash is excellent with only one crack near the vent. Additional details regarding the cars cosmetic and mechanical condition can be found below. ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR ALFA ROMEO SPIDER VELOCE This 1991 Alfa Romeo Veloce is an extremely nice, well maintained example. We regularly seek out exceptional Alfa Romeo's, and it has been some time since we have been able to locate an example of this caliber. Frankly, this particular Alfa car stands out as being a special example for a number of reasons that will become apparent to the Alfa enthusiast. Often times, it is the details (both in terms of mechanical and cosmetic care) that separate a high quality Alfa Spider from an average, or below average car that will have significant, costly "needs" in future years. As they say, "The Devil is in the Details." Consider the following realities of this beautiful Alfa Romeo Spider: * Limited, long term ownership (2 owners, One for 20 years and one for 10~ years) * Northern California Car Supported by Car Fax & Records * NO rust or body damage * Very straight body with beautiful high gloss paint * No previous or current accident damage * One very high quality / trim removed re-paint * Totally Clean Car Fax with 2 Previous Owners * Includes maintenance history * Original delivery documents come with the Alfa, including: - The Owner's Manual - Original Warranty Booklet - The Audio System Owner's Manual - Authorized Dealer Directory - Original Equipment Tire Brochure - Rust Penetration Warranty Booklet - Maintenance Program Booklet - Spider * Serviced at Alfa Romeo dealership & an independent Alfa specialist * Original spare, & Jack * Original canvas convertible top (clear window) in serviceable condition * Upgraded AM/FM & CD sound system (removable faceplate) * High quality car cover (Used in garage.car never stored outside) * Original Spider Alloy Wheels in excellent condition * Well maintained & serviced by previous owners * Original / numbers matching engine & transmission Not only is this Alfa a rare find due to the extremely good condition, but also, it has been a California car and has not been exposed to the salt and inclement weather that is so prevalent in many parts of the United States. This has been strictly a weekend car that has seen very limited, but regular use over the course of the several years. It has been only hand washed and waxed, as needed, and professionally serviced and detailed. Of course, the Alfa has always been garaged. BODY /TRIM / TOP The body is finished in its original black color of "Rosso".RED. We believe that, when finished in red, the Alfa Spider is simply the most attractive Alfa of the 1980's and 1990's. As a Spider, the Alfa has the lovely beautiful interior that is unique to the upgraded Spider version (vs. the more basic "Graduate") of the Alfa Spider. The interior has absolutely lovely tan leather seats and black carpet, dash and door trim as accents. It is a striking combination. The paint is very high gloss with no peeling, fading, or signs of damage. As the photographs indicate, this is a very lovely car, indeed. The car's exterior is in superb condition and, perhaps most importantly, is totally free from rust, pitting or damage. Even a very close, critical inspection reveals only a few minor imperfections (side and front door/road chips, as an example) but not the typical, extensive door dings, dents, scratches or damage typical on an Alfa of this vintage. The hood is free from the usual parking dent/damage on the front of the car and the bumpers do not show the "rash" so often seen on big city Alfa's. The information obtained directly from the previous owner (and supported by a thorough inspection of the vehicle), suggests that the Alfa has never been involved in a serious accident, or had any major damage of any kind. There are, as one would expect, some very fine road chips on the front of the car that are unavoidable on a low sports car of this type. However, any minor imperfections do not in any way detracts from the overall appearance of the Alfa Spider. Any minor imperfections and require close, critical inspection to be identified. The convertible top on the Alfa is in nice condition and free from rips or tears on the top itself. The beading on the edge of the top shows some cracking that does not affect the functionality of the top nor does the faded underside of the convertible top. The top is manual (as was the case with all Alfa's) and the framework works perfectly and seals well. The rear window is clear and has always been protected (when in the down position) with a towel. Some of the stitching is loose on the window but it is in place and could easily be repaired by a capable upholstery shop. The car has been used largely as a weekend car and the top has been down more than up! The latches work well and even the small leather straps that hold the fasteners (typically missing, or ripped) are in place to prevent rattling of the top latches. As expected with an automobile of this quality that has been garaged, pampered by its owner, and rarely (if ever) exposed to the elements, the Alfa does not have the typical rust found on sports cars in most parts of the USA. Even the spare tire "well", and undercarriage reveals a dry, clean and rust free car (refer to photos). The doors, hood, and trunk line up well, with even gaps, and close easily and securely. The underside of the hood is clean for a vehicle of this age and free of significant dirt, oil and grease (see photos on the Website). The original factory stickers are in place on the underside of the hood, inner side door, trunk and all of the labels remain undamaged and legible. The trunk is finished in the original factory red color and is clean and dry. The Alfa logo is embedded on the most forward panel that, when lowered, exposes the tools and jack. The spare tire well is also clean and totally rust free and the spare is in very good condition with only minor marks from being stored. The door locks operate properly as does the lock on the glove box door. The trunk releases with the inside release, as per factory specifications, and has a working lock on the handle, located inside of the passenger compartment. There is also a gas cap release located inside the passenger compartment, which can be locked to secure the exterior gas cap. The exterior trim is also in very good condition. The bumpers are straight, free from accident damage, and do not have the appearance of have never been re-painted. The photos accurately reflect the beauty of the exterior of this Alfa. The exterior plastic trim and other exterior moldings have virtually no damage and are in excellent condition. The power side windows are functional and free from cracks and damage. It is in very good condition with no cracks, or noticeable stars/chips. The chrome surround strip around the windshield is in excellent condition. INTERIOR The interior is in really nice, original condition. Of course, as a Spider, the car has the upgraded leather interior. In fact, this car has been upgraded to an even higher level than a "normal" Alfa Spider. When the seats were recovered as a result of the characteristic prematurely wear of the "Suede" insets, the owner spent a considerable sum to have the seats re-done in leather that resembles the upholstery of a vehicle like the Ferrari Dino. The stitching is beautiful and the seats are much more practical than when the car was new. Unlike many of the Alfa cars that we see (we have owned over 25) that show significant wear on the dash, carpet and many other areas of the interior, this car is in remarkably good condition. Of course, no Alfa would be complete without some kind of dash crack but fortunately, this Alfa only has one crack near the vent. As the photos reflect, the condition of this Alfa's interior is extremely nice and it is unquestionably one of the nicer that we have seen in a long time. The driver's side seat does not show any rips, tear or significant wear but it has become slightly soft, especially on the vertical portion of the driver's side seat "bolster." The passenger side seat is excellent and free from any damage only showing the fine patina of aged leather. The Alfa's most recent owner has lovingly cared for the car, and it shows. The seats usually become very dirty and terribly worn, but this is not the case with this particular Alfa Spider. The interior is very clean including the rear storage area, carpeted front areas, and trunk. The dash is finished in black, and the door panels are tastefully finished in black and are also excellent. The center console is black, and in great condition, free from any cracks, damage or signs of wear. The trunk is finished in the original black carpet that is free from any rips, or damage of any kind. There are no stains on the carpet and the car has older, but good, carpet mats with the Alfa logo. The original spare is in place as are the original tools, jack and all of the instruction / owner's manuals. The door sills and door jambs are clean, and free from dirt and grease. The retracting seat belts are original and in good condition. All the gauges are functional and even the clock works, and keeps accurate time! The lenses are clean, and do not have any cracks or damage. The center console is also free from cracks and the shift boot is in excellent original condition. The shift knob is stock as is the steering wheel. The center horn button is also totally stock and has the Alfa insignia. Of course, the horn is fully functional. Unlike earlier Alfa's the car has a driver's side airbag for safety. The Spider has an updated sound system including the addition of speakers neatly mounted on the rear "package shelf" behind the front seats. This is a great location since it does not result in cutting the door panels and provides excellent sound for the AM/FM / CD system. The glove box contains the original manuals, and the manual for the stereo, along with the other factory documents. ENGINE & MECHANICAL COMPONENTS The Alfa Spider runs and drives beautifully. Within the past 14 days, the Alfa passed California's strict new dynamometer smog test, with absolutely no problems. The car is currently registered in California and, of course, carries a clear California title. Since the beginning of its life in the USA (1991) the car has been registered in California. A review of the records and discussions with the car's most recent long term owner suggests a true concern for ensuring that the car received frequent maintenance and a "cost no object" approach to the care of Alfa. In fact, the only reason for the sale of the Alfa is his relocation to England and the impracticality of having the car shipped back to his new home across the "Pond." In addition to the car receiving dealer servicing (documented) in its early life, the car was serviced by a local Bay Area Italian specialty repair facility and the records document the service work. The Alfa Spider received maintenance including the following repairs that are documented in the repair folder on the car: - Passed Smog with No problem on 7/12/10 - R & R clutch assembly (prior to the current owner's acquisition at an estimated 60,000 miles) - Major Service completed at 60,000 miles (Spark plugs, tune-up, fluids, filters, etc.) - Replace brake light switch & miscellaneous hardware - Starter replaced - Regular oil services including lubrication, filters and adjustments - Cooling system / new coolant - Tires replaced and alignment (Rear tires are excellent Dunlop's with Pirelli's in front) - Brake replacement (Recently checked and have 70+% remaining on the front with 60%+ on the rear pads). - Functional E-Brake (pads replaced) - Inner & outer wheel bearings & seals - Repair of power windows and replacement of power window motors During the 10~ years that he current owner has enjoyed the Alfa; he accumulated just over 10,000 miles on the car. This is documented by the California Certificate of Title that shows his purchase date of 10/23/00 and mileage at that time of 69,503 (current mileage is 79,886). Much of the repair work listed above was completed during that time in addition to regularly scheduled oil services that were performed based on time vs. mileage due to the limited use of the Alfa. While all receipts were not retained by the owner, the car reflects excellent care and runs and drives as an Alfa should. In fact, for the next few weeks, we will be enjoying the Alfa for our short, 3 mile commute to work so it will have up to 100 miles more than currently reported on the listing. Specifically, the oil was changed every 3,000 miles and was last completed in March 2010 when the car had 79,200 miles. It will be due for its next oil change in August or at approximately 82,200 miles. The car was just inspected and the independent California test resulted in a 100% "Pass" of the required items. The Alfa also has a history of successfully passing smog and just passed California strict new dynamometer check. When it comes to drivability, this particular Alfa is absolutely great, and it drives like an Alfa that is only a few years old. The car is great fun to drive and does not exhibit any problems. The car starts immediately when cold and hot, and runs cool, even in warm California temperatures. The battery is excellent and, as a result of the fuel injection, starts the car on the first attempt. The Alfa is currently registered in California and has and always has had a clean title. The engine is very strong and does not smoke, leak fluids, or exhibit any drivability problems what so ever. The Alfa idles smoothly at just below 1000 rpm, does not hesitate, and pulls strongly through the gears and, in typical Alfa fashion, has a wonderful exhaust note. As a result of the 5-speed transmission, the car can be driven easily at highway speeds with absolutely no problem. The characteristically weak 2nd gear syncromesh shows absolutely no weakness in this Alfa as a result of the transmission rebuilt that was completed within the past few hundred miles. The Alfa can easily be down shifted from 3rd gear to 2nd gear at speed, unlike other Alfa Romeo cars that demonstrate weak 2nd gear syncros when this is attempted. Reverse gear engages smoothly, unlike many of the Alfa's that we have driven/owned. Of course, the car absolutely never pops out of reverse or forward gear, and does not have any transmission, rear end noise. We attribute the strength of the transmission to the car having been under the ownership of an enthusiast that did not abuse the car and knew how to drive it. There is no noise in the driveline and the clutch engages properly and without slippage, chattering or fuss. The car steers straight and sure, the brakes work well and stop the car without any pulling, squeaking or noise. The emergency brake is fully functional. While the odometer is fully functional and accurately records mileage, the speedometer can display erratic ("Bounce") especially at speeds in excess of 40 MPH. It is somewhat unpredictable and may be an issue that will require attention in the future. Also, the tachometer just stopped working on our short drive to take photographs but we are attempting to have it repaired at this time. It is electronic and we suspect that the cause may be as straightforward as a blown fuse. However, we cannot guarantee that the tach will be working when the car is sold / delvier but we will try our best to get it fixed. The spare tire is the original and the spare tire well is 100% free from any signs of rust or moisture, only the normal accumulation of surface dirt. The trunk is extremely clean and the factory jack is in place. The spare wheel has the normal scuffs from being stored. The wheels on the car ("Phone Dial') are generally very good with several being totally free from damage a few having the usual scuffs from normal use. Close up photos of each of the 4 wheels are shown on the listing. We have owned over 25+ Alfa's during the past 25 years and can say with confidence that is an absolutely great example of an Alfa Spider Veloce that we have had the pleasure of owning. Thank You, Classic Cars Ltd. 925-846-1451 MISCELLANEOUS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) 1. Has it received a safety / light inspection? Yes, the car has been checked for turn signals, brake lights, and license plate lights. 2. What is the total mileage on the Alfa? The odometer currently shows 79,980 and based on the records, there appears to be chronological documentation that the miles are correct. Also, and perhaps most important, the Car Fax report supports the accuracy of the mileage. 3. Was the work completed by professionals? Yes, all of the mechanical work was done professionally, and to a high standard. No backyard or "Do it yourself" mechanic has worked on this Alfa Romeo Spider. 4. What were the results of the independent inspection? The Alfa passed with no problem and no safety issues were identified. 5. What are the cars needs (if any) at this time? The vehicle is in very nice cosmetic condition and, as we have indicated, runs and drives well. The car has been very well cared for over the years and it shows. The previous owner reported that the air-conditioning worked but hadn't been used in long, long time. The A/C equipment is in place and while the air conditioning is working. However, we must admit that, our experience with the previous sale of Alfa Spider Veloce's is that most owners are not at all interested in the A/C on these cars and realize that the quality of the air conditioning system, even when the car was new, was not especially effective. 6. Does the car have seat belts? Yes, factory shoulder harnesses (no belts in the rear area). 7. What is the condition of the convertible top and does the frame work function well. The convertible is in good, totally serviceable condition with a see through window. It shows only minimal fading and no rips, or tears. The stitching is coming loose on parts of the window but it is held in place. The frame is raised and lowered easily and all of the latches (even the fasteners that hold the front clasps!) are in place. 8. Can we have the vehicle inspected? Absolutely, we encourage inspections of this Alfa by serious, qualified individuals, or professional inspection companies. All we ask is that you call us at 925-846-1451 to arrange a convenient time since we are in and out of our offices quite a bit. We are unable to allow inspections 24 hours prior to the end of the auction as we are closed on Sunday. 9. Can you provide some "ballpark" costs of shipping costs around the United States? Yes, on a fully insured, ENCLOSED carrier (we do not recommend the more common "open" transporters for a car of this caliber) and delivered to your door, about $1500.00 for most of the East Coast, $1300.00 to some of the Southern States, and around $1000 to points in the Midwest. The cost to Los Angeles would be in the area of $500.00. PLEASE check with us as these are just estimates, NOT firm shipping costs, and rates are changing regularly due to fuel costs, exact locations, and other factors. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales? On Aug-04-10 at 16:50:34 PDT, seller added the following information: IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to ensure improved and completely cold air conditioning, we have had the A/C system converted to R134A, charged and inspected. It is fully functional and cold. Also, the guages have been professionally inspected (by Speedo Tach) and repaired and re-installed. Everything is fully functional at this time. Finally, we have recently had discussions with prospective buyers that mentioned seeing "the same" cars on eBay for lower prices. As an example, one of the Alfa's that is listed has some similarieites (mostly that it's also red!) but is, in fact, VERY different. Some of the items that stand out relative to the other Alfa include: The car has a history of being in both Wisconsin and New York (Rust, rust, rust) There are no close-up photos or photos of the underside or trunk area The car has a "No Guarantee" Auto Check as a result of "Inconsistent Mileage The Auto Check score is 18 (Our Alfa rates a 51 out of a high of 55) The car listed / compared is a Graduate (no A/C, no leather..basic car) Ours is a high end Spider Veloce Our Alfa Spider Veloce has undergone a restoration of high quality including paint (original color), replacemetn interior and much, much more) So, is there a difference?? We'll let you be the judge based on the above information. Please let us know if we can answer any questions regarding the Alfa, a Buy it Now, shipping, etc. Thank You, Paul, Classic Cars Ltd. 925-846-1451
