Vehicle Detail

Beautiful Ambassador Super Petty Designed "Flying Lady" Very Nice Driver Quality Automobile! The 1951 Nash is a car ahead of its time. These cars were the first to incorporate wind tunnel testing as part of their design. So many of the features of these cars set the stage for many modern automobiles. Before the 1951 model line appeared, some styling cues had been decided. The squared-off, more conventional-looking "SkyFlow" rear fenders appeared on the Ambassador, complemented by vertically placed oval taillights. Up front, the sheetmetal was unchanged because the differences in length would have greatly increased the tooling costs. The grille was new though, with a toothy grin not unlike the 1951 Buick making the two look somewhat related from a front view. The 1951’s also received horizontal parking lights and new "Guard-rail" front bumpers, and the Ambassadors received a distinctive molding that swept rearward from the parking light down two-thirds of the front fender. The "Pilot Panel" dashboard is color matched to the exterior. All of the gauges are directly in front of the driver and is in a curved cowl. She retained the sliding Glove Drawer. The Ambassador boasted a larger 234.8-cid overhead-valve six that put out 112 horses at only 3400 rpm and featured a sturdy seven-main-bearing crank for longevity that was hard to beat. Nash boasted that a 1950 Ambassador had traveled 712 miles at 95.3 mph in the Pan American Road Race in Mexico, "Believed to be a class stock car record never equaled!" Another Ambassador won the Bell Timing Award Trophy as the fastest sedan tested at El Mirage Dry Lake, California; it did 99.4 mph in the flying mile. This car is in very good original condition. She has been repainted at some point in the past and she is showing her age a bit. The paint is becoming a little thin on the roof of the car. There are some chips on the hood and few minor ones on the sides. The interior has been redone and shows very well. The “Pullman Seats” function well and turn the interior into a large bed. The doors all have very good fitment and they open and close with an authoritative thump. It is nice to hear the quality of serious metal closing together! The engine has been rebuilt and runs and drives very smoothly. The Three Speed manual transmission shift very smoothly and the Overdrive works as she should. This is not a show car but would be an excellent candidate for a restoration. She is a good solid original that runs and drives very well. She can be totally enjoyed the way she is; she still attracts a lot of attention where ever she goes. These Nash’s have quite a following. The styling was sometimes called cartoon like but the appeal they have is broad. They are a styling Icon from the past, and they were far ahead of their time. The smooth flowing lines are augmented with the Petty designed Flying Lady Hood Ornament (a $9.00 option at the time!). For uniqueness, they are beyond peer. I have many more photographs of this car and more details of most areas that I can email to interested parties.
