Vehicle Detail

I purchased this truck new from a dealer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It has served as a daily driver, a working truck and even a grocery getter through the 29 1/2 years I've owned it. Everything works, including the R-12 air conditioning. The truck moved to New York State with the family in 1981. It was repainted in 1985, and has been "semi-retired" since then. It has a solid 5 speed manual transmission with two speed transfer case and locking hubs. The clutch is fine, with a recent slave cylinder replacement. The power brakes are fine. This truck represents the first generation of the 720 truck line, and is equipped with the bulletproof L-20B engine. It's mildly underpowered with a heavy flywheel, and coupled with the manual steering the truck has a "big rig" feel when turning, accelerating and shifting. Subsequent versions of the 720 added power steering and the multi-valve NAPS-Z engine, but this one is the original design, closely derived from its 620 truck predecessor. The engine is a direct copy of the Mercedes-Benz engines of the late 50's, and a similar engine powered my long-gone 710 station wagon and a 6 cylinder version (L28) is in my 1977 280Z. It has a progressive two barrel carburetor, mechanical fuel pump on the head and it just starts and runs every time. This can be a great collector truck for special needs, cruise nights, or just getting something home from Lowe's or the Home Depot that doesn't fit in a down-sized SUV and yet it fits in the smallest garage. I've hauled a genuine half ton of firewood home on the New York State Thruway in prior years and the truck never complained. The truck has Ziebart undercoating which has been kept up to date, and in addition the insides of the doors, tailgate and hood have been coated with linseed oil to help seal them from the forces of corrosion. Although I'm reluctant to part with it, I have some other pickups in the collection at this point and this one is a neat truck that isn't truly necessary any more and should go to a good home.
