Is the curator of a Delahaye Figoni et Falaschi on equal terms with the guy that puts a Continental kit on his lifted 4-wheel drive Corvette? Admit it; you love Pagoda SL's and feel this enlightened superiority places you among the select few connoisseurs of vintage European motor vehicles. When looking at this superb daily driven 230 SL Roadster you can be forgiven perhaps, for thinking your cultivated taste in premium classics exists on a higher plane. The 230 SL is really a piece of art, sculpted upon a substantial foundation. The W113 chassis was used from 1963 to '71 and the lighter, more nimble early 230 versions are probably closer to the original ideal. It can be argued that by the time this roadster was made in 1966, after three years development the car was a very well sorted out machine. It is a steel, unit-body design with doors, hood, trunk lid and tonneau cover made of aluminum. The silky 2.3 liter engine is an overhead cam, in-line 6 cylinder with Bosch fuel injection. Brakes were power assisted with Girling discs up front and finned aluminum drums at the rear. Fuel injection and disc brakes were rare items on US roads in 1966 and is further evidence of the high-end nature of this car, then and now. Suspension is fully independent with coil springs at each corner with power steering that is light and communicative without being over-assisted. All of the above described, on this particular 230 SL, functions as designed by Mercedes engineers. Legendary Daimler-Benz build quality can only partially explain why this car looks and drives so extraordinarily well. Superb maintenance and care is a big part of it certainly, but the general dedication to perfection that most Mercedes Benz owners strive to keep in their pride and joys is another. This great looking 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL is mechanically sound with a strong 2.3 liter in-line six and a 4-speed automatic transmission that shifts beautifully. The rebuilt steering and suspension system can be felt immediately once under way in the form of tight steering and confidence inspiring handling. The brakes stop straight with no pulling. The glass is all good, all lights inside and out shine bright and all door/hood/trunk and window hardware work properly. This is an outstanding classic Mercedes-Benz that will do any owner proud. It has a reliable drive train and impeccable highway manners that make this German roadster a rare treat, to see and to drive. You can pay big money for a museum piece or a trailer queen that you're afraid to leave anywhere or, finally purchase a beautiful classic Mercedes convertible sports car that is as fun as it is good looking. You will not be disappointed with this car. These artifacts occur particularly on edges with contrast and some full body shots. Should a serious high bidder need photos with better resolution, we are happy to provide these that will show the true paint condition on this car. Rear wheel lip chrome is slightly dented. That white line is a reflection of the parking line on the asphalt. Top stainless has some scrapes. Looks great from 20 feet. Interior hardtop upholstery pulling away but as you can see in the next photo . . . . . . does not look bad, even at 3 feet. Some small chipping around headlamp trim - can't see from 10 feet. Slight paint issue above right/rear tail lamp - can't see from 15 feet. Paint Crackling, chips, flaws and scratches in some areas more than others. But over all the paint looks great from 5-20 feet and from there on out, spectacular. If you're going to be picky about normal driver quality paint wear and tear, spend double your money and get your anxiety driving trailer queen that will look perfect but give you ulcers. Some chipping and paint aging in this area - hard to see at 20 feet. Also, this key insert appears to be an alarm from way back (haven't tested it and we don't care if it works, their worthless anyways - Good insurance is a great solution). Some dried/missing weather stripping - easily replaced. One of the nicest convertible wells we've seen. Note the rubber soft top seal, Easy replacement if you want. Obvious rust repair so common to these SLs An undercarriage that has seen rust through repairs and looks to be sealed very well. Over all looks very solid especially in the critical areas. We've seen some cars that putting them on a lift would be a safety issue let alone driving them down the road; that is not the case her. She's solid, road ready and sealed quite well. By the way, did we mention she doesn't leak anywhere we could inspect? Some bubbling behind passenger front wheel - can't see at 15 feet. Driver/Owner/photographer displaying multitasking skills. Overall assessment...I love the car, love it that it is not a trailer show piece and enjoy taking it anywhere. You will too. Happy Bidding!
