Vehicle Detail
This 1967 Deluxe Microbus is mostly original. I purchased it on January 11, 1985 from the Memorial Baptist Church in Denton, Texas. Memorial Baptist had purchased the bus on October 26, 1977 from the used car lot of Banner Chevrolet in Denton. The removal of Memorial Baptist's name from the bus revealed the address '3605 Ruskin St.' A little detective work soon confirmed that the bus had belonged to the Haynes Memorial Church of God In Christ, 3605 Ruskin Street, Dallas, Texas. Haynes Memorial sold the bus in 1977 upon the death of the bus owner, the Bishop F. L. Haynes. I assume that Bishop Haynes purchased the bus new from Clarence Talley Volkswagen, Dallas, Texas. I wrote to Volkswagenwerk in Germany and learned that this bus was manufactured on June 14, 1967 and shipped to the USA on June 15th. As stated earlier, this bus is mostly original with its original engine. I rebuilt the engine to 1600cc, added a doghouse cooler, alternator and centrifical advance distributor about 10 or 15 years ago. The interior is original including the upholstery, headliner and floor mats. I discarded the worn door panels, but I have the trim pieces and fasteners. I had the bus painted a few years ago, with new weather stripping on windows and doors. The pictures show that this bus is very solid with minimal rust for a 43 year old original. As with any original bus of this age, there are 'issues:' it pops-out of 4th gear unless held in place by hand or by handy bungee strap, the lower door hinge on driver's door has practically broken loose from the door and the side mirrors need replacing. I spun-out on an icy bridge about 10 years ago and bent in the front right corner near the headlight. The paint and body man did a nice job bringing her back. Overall, this could be the original you've been waiting for. I've got 2 kids in college and a daughter's wedding in October that forces this sale. Luckily, I've got other VW's to get me around. PS: Free tail-gunner with each purchase!
