Wankle President Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA 925-846-1451 ABOUT THIS 1990 ALFA ROMEO GRADUATE 2000cc We are frequently asked to locate original, California examples of the desirable earlier Alfa Romeo cars and, over the years we have been fortunate enough to have owned and sold beautiful examples to buyers all over the world. Within the past few years (due in part to the increasing strength of the Euro and the demand for rust free, California cars), many of these earlier Alfa's are being purchased by buyers to Europe for resale or private use. We also sell a large percentage of our sports cars to buyers in parts of the country where, unfortunately, the elements have taken on a heavy toll on these cars. As we know from having lived in the Chicago area for some 25 years, trying to locate a nice example in the Midwest/East Coast can be quite a challenge. The Series 3 Spider was previewed in North America for the 1982 model year with the introduction of 2.0 liter Bosch electronic fuel injection to replace the SPICA mechanical injection. Later in the production of the third generation Alfa Spider, the Graduate model was introduced as a more affordable, "Pure" Alfa sports car... While it had the same engine and transmission as the Graduate and Spider. The Alfa Spiders of this generation were powered by the durable, with a 1962 cc double overhead cam, four-cylinder engine with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection introduced for the 1982 model year except that the VVT mechanism was now L-Jet activated) and five-speed manual transmission. It lacked the alloy wheels and what many Alfa enthusiasts deemed as unnecessary luxury features of the other two models. The Graduate model had manual windows, durable vinyl seats, a vinyl top, and steel wheels as standard equipment. It first appeared in 1985 in North America and continued until 1990. Third generation Production 1982-1990 Engine(s) 1.6 L I4 2.0 L I4 Transmission(s) 5-speed manual Wheelbase 88.6 in (2,250 mm) Length 168.8 in (4,288 mm) Width 64.1 in (1,628 mm) Height 48.8 in (1,240 mm) ABOUT THE ALFA ROMEO SPIDER The Alfa Romeo Spider was introduced at the 1966 Geneva Motor show, receiving rave reviews. The car was designed by Battista Pininfarina, founder of the Turin based design house, and designer of a wide range of Italian exotic automobiles. The Alfa Spider has always had quite a following among collector's and enthusiasts, but gained considerable recognition as the car that was driven by Dustin Hoffman in the movie "The Graduate" in 1967. Over the years, numerous changes were made to the car, and the styling remained very pleasing even in light of increased requirements for stronger bumpers, and safety equipment. The mid-1980's brought the square tailed cars with front chin spoilers, subtle rear trunk lip spoilers and larger side view mirrors. Unlike some of the other European sports cars, the lines of the Alfa matured very gracefully, until the end of the production of the Alfa Spider in 1993. Early Alfa Spider's were equipped with 1600 twin cam engines which were later increased in size to two-liter, fuel injected versions. The larger, current engines, proved to be very reliable, and offered excellent drivability, torque, and good overall performance for a small convertible. This particular 1990 Alfa Romeo Graduate is equipped with the following: * 2.0 Liter (1962cc) Twin Overhead Cam Engine * Fuel Injected Engine * 5-Speed, Fully Synchronized Transmission * Electronic Ignition * Independent Front Suspension * Front Anti Sway Bar * Power Assisted 4-Wheel Disc Brakes * Steel Belted Radial Tires * Tan Bucket Seats with Brown Carpet * Adjustable Head Rests * Electronic Tachometer * Water Temperature, Oil Pressure & Voltmeter Gauges * Sport Steering Wheel * Driver's Side Air Bag * 2 Speed Electronic Washer/Wipers * Dual Side View Mirrors * 50 State Version - Catalyst System * Locking Vent Windows * Day/Night Rear View Mirror * Tinted Glass * Factory Graduate (Upgraded) Alloy Wheels The Alfa Spider Graduate is considered by many to be one of the all time classic Alfa Romeo convertibles of the 1980's. They are comfortable, fun to drive, and offer very attractive styling, at an affordable price. Unlike many of the earlier British roadsters, the Alfa's offered increased refinement, performance, and reliability, as well. They also were factory equipped with a variety of standard "creature comforts" not found in many of the more basic, earlier sports cars. Also, "Opening up" the car to the sky above is simply a matter of undoing (from the driver's seat) the two latches from the windshield area, and pushing it back to the rear storage area..Instant convertible! Considering their size, the Alfa Spider even offered ample trunk space for those long weekends on the coast, or to your favorite holiday destination. Consider the benefits of this example: * The Alfa is located in Rust Free, Central California Car (45 minutes from San Francisco & ½ Hour to local shipping Port for overseas shipping) * Stock 5 Speed transmission * One re-paint in its original color * Striking tan seats upholstery * Replacement factory style cloth (No inexpensive vinyl here!) convertible top * Original jack & spare * Upgraded AM/FM & CD with multiple speakers * Very tidy engine bay * Desirable color Combination - Red with Tan / Black & High Quality Canvas Top * Receipts for mechanical work / evaluation & complete cosmetic restoration * Upgraded Alfa Romeo Factory 5-spoke alloys (Sourced from an Alfa Spider Veloce) The Alfa's overall condition supports that the car has been well maintained in order to ensure reliability and great appearance at all times. The Alfa is, of course, exempt from California's smog requirements (and virtually all other states). If there is any question in your particular State, we ask that you confirm its status in your state, but as a 23+ year-old vehicle it is almost certain to qualify as smog exempt in your state, as well. The lack of any exterior rust is apparent on this Alfa Romeo. Close inspection of the trunk, under the hood, rocker panels, fenders and the usual areas of rust; reveal a totally clean, rust free example. As the photos indicate, the car is straight and clean and does not have the rust that is so common on most Midwest & East Coast cars of this vintage. It has the appearance that only California and similar well maintained West Coast cars enjoy. HISTORY OF THIS LOCAL 1990 ALFA ROMEO GRADUATE This car was purchased by its most recent Bay area owner in 2006. The Alfa was purchased from its original owner and the extensive file of receipts from both owners' documents the cars current mileage of 85,225 as being accurate. When the car was new, it carried a purchase price (including tax, license, etc) of just under $20,000. Needless to say, this represented a very costly vehicle "in the day." During the previous 5 years the car has only accumulated 10,000 miles and it has been used primarily as a weekend car in and around Marin Country, California. However, during this time, a considerable amount (receipts totaling $10,000 for this time period) was invested to ensure that the car was mechanically sound at all times. Details regarding the mechanical rebuild can be found later in this narrative on the Alfa Romeo. ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR ALFA ROMEO SPIDER GRADUATE This 1990 Alfa Romeo Graduate is a nice, well maintained example. We regularly seek out mechanically strong, reliable Alfa Romeo's, and this is a great example of such a car. This Alfa will appeal to the enthusiast that appreciates that, sometimes, "More is Less." Specifically, the addition of some of the Spider (or Quadrifoglio) added equipment (power windows, leather seats, A/C) can add to the complexity of the car (resulting in increased maintenance costs) and the weight of the car. The Graduate has the identical mechanical components as the others and the fun to drive factor is the same. It represents one of the last true Alfa sports cars. Consider the following realities of this beautiful Alfa Romeo Graduate: * Limited, long term ownership * Maintained / service in Northern California Car * No rust or body damage * Very straight body with beautiful high gloss paint * Clean Car Fax with 2 Previous Owners * Includes maintenance records & history dating back to 1994 when the Alfa was only a few years old * Includes original Owner's manual * Serviced at Alfa Romeo dealership & an independent Alfa specialist * Original spare & jack * Absolutely beautiful like new, high quality canvas convertible top (totally clear window) * Upgraded AM/FM & CD sound system (removable faceplate) * Used in garage.car never stored outside) * Upgraded Alfa Spider wheels and like new tires * Comprehensive maintenance & service history by previous owners (documented) * Original / numbers matching engine & transmission BODY /TRIM / TOP The body is finished in its original red color (Rosso). Personally, we believe that, this is the best color on the classic Alfa Graduate. After-all, who doesn't like an Italian sports car in red!! The car's body is very straight and free from any reported signs (supported by Car Fax) or indications of present or previous body damage. Perhaps most importantly, is totally free from rust, pitting or damage. A very close, critical inspection reveals the typical minor imperfections (slight door dings door chips, as an example) that are to be expected on a car of this vintage. However, the hood is totally free from the usual large parking dent/damage on the front of the car. The paint is high gloss and there are no signs of partial re-painting. However, when re-painted the car did not receive an extremely high level re-paint so there minor imperfections that most casual observers would not notice. Also, there are some water spots/stains that may come out with a thorough polishing/ clean-up. As the photographs indicate the Alfa shows very well and would make a terrific weekend "driver." The doors, hood, and trunk line up well, with even gaps, and close easily and securely. The underside of the hood is clean for a vehicle of this age and free of significant dirt, oil and grease (see photos on the Website). The original factory stickers are in place on the underside of the hood, inner side door, trunk and all of the labels remain undamaged and legible. The trunk is finished in the original factory red color and is clean and dry. The doors, hood, and trunk line up well, with even gaps, and close easily and securely. The underside of the hood is clean for a vehicle of this age and free of significant dirt, oil and grease (see photos on the Website). The original factory stickers are in place on the underside of the hood, inner side door, trunk and all of the labels remain undamaged and legible. When the convertible top was replaced, it was replaced with a high quality canvas top, not the less costly vinyl top typically found on the Graduate model. The convertible top on the Alfa is in absolutely beautiful condition with virtually no signs of wear & tear and is, of course, free from tears, rips, splitting or damage of any kind. The top works perfectly and seals tightly. The rear window is perfectly clear. The door locks operate properly as does the lock on the glove box door. The trunk releases with the inside release, as per factory specifications, and has a working lock on the handle, located inside of the passenger compartment. There is also a gas cap release located inside the passenger compartment, which can be locked to secure the exterior gas cap. The exterior trim is also in very good condition. The front and rear bumpers are free from the extensive, major damage found on other "Big City" Alfa's that are exposed to parallel parking, on a regular basis. The bumpers are straight, free from accident damage, and do not have the appearance of have never been re-painted. There is a very minor crack in the lower valance (below the rear bumper) at the far right side that is minor. The exterior plastic trim and other exterior moldings have virtually no damage and are in excellent condition. The power side windows are functional and free from cracks and damage. The front windshield is original to the car and carries the Alfa insignia to support this fact. There is a repaired "star" on the driver's side of the windshield that has not spread in years. The very outer edges of the windshield are showing some discoloration from age but this does not affect the usability/drivability of the car. The chrome surround strip around the windshield is in excellent condition. INTERIOR The interior is in completely original condition. In fact, the interior has held up well and we would rate the overall condition of the interior as good. Both the driver's and passenger seats do not show any rips, tears or significant signs of wear. The door panels are tastefully finished in a beautiful combination of tan and black and are in excellent condition. The dash is very solid with only one slight crack (near the vent) that is barely visible in the photographs. The center console is black, and is also in excellent condition, free from any cracks, damage or signs of wear. The carpet is in good condition with no major damage and some slight soiling. It is faded in parts, especially the rear section behind the driver's seats and has turned a cool shade of brown / orange that actually looks good and compliments the interior color of the Alfa. The trunk is finished in the original brown carpet and is in original condition. The spare and tools are stored in the trunk and the inside release for the trunk deck lid is functional (and locks). There is no rust in the trunk area nor are there signs of damage to the rear of the car. The door sills and door jambs are clean, and free from dirt and grease. The retracting seat belts are original, free of any fraying or damage, as are the receiving parts of the seat belt units. The gauges are all functional. The lenses are clean, and do not have any cracks or damage. The center console is also free from cracks and the shift boot is in excellent original condition. The shift knob is stock as is the steering wheel. The center horn button is also totally stock and has the Alfa insignia. The Alfa is equipped with an upgraded AM/FM / CD system with a removable faceplate (and storage container). The glove box contains the original Owner's manual, and the manual for the stereo, along with the other factory documents. ENGINE & MECHANICAL COMPONENTS The Alfa Graduate runs and drives really well. The car has passed California's smog checks and is currently registered in California until 9/2010. Of course the Graduate carries a clear California title. A review of the records and discussions with the car's most recent owner suggests a true concern for ensuring that the car received frequent maintenance and a "cost no object" approach to the care of the Alfa. The majority of the Alfa service work was performed by a local Alfa Romeo specialist who completed extensive work on the car during the past 5 years. The Alfa Graduate not only received ongoing maintenance but some major repairs including the following (documented in the repair folder on the car.included): Within approximately 10,000~ Miles: - Complete engine rebuild (lower end) including new pistons, rod bearings, re-machine crank, new timing chain, valve adjustment, all machine work ($6700.00!!) NOTE: Engine rebuilt due to mechanic finding main bearing cap in sump. - 60,000 mile major service - Replace front sway bar mount - New fuel hoses - New tires (4) - New muffler including resonator - Smog - Complete minor service (3 services) - New convertible top - New halogen headlights - New clutch hydraulics / bleed - Replace brake master cylinder - New brakes & rotors (front & rear) - Check other safety items - Replace brake fluid - Replace motor mounts - New catalytic converter The independent California inspection resulted in a 100% "Pass" of the required items. The file of receipts is not listed in detail but it also includes a number of receipts that document the cars history of passing smog, regular oil and minor services and other miscellaneous work over the course of many years. They also document the cars accurate mileage at 85,225. We often times see well maintained cars. However, it is refreshing to see a car that has received the care that it deserves. The frequent change of fluids, (often times exceeding manufacturer's recommended guidelines), tune ups are certain to contribute to a long engine life and continued reliability. Preventative care has made this a dependable, reliable Alfa that should go years without any significant investment in repairs. Of course, the fact that this car received a major overhaul just over 10,000 miles ago makes it a candidate for a very long life! It is also important to note that, unlike many of the Alfa's that are neglected after several years or ownership, this particular car continued to receive the care and attention that it deserved over the course of many years and up to the present time. When it comes to drivability, this particular Alfa is absolutely great, running and driving like an Alfa that is only a few years old. The car is great fun to drive and does not exhibit any problems. The car starts immediately when cold and hot, and runs cool, even in warm California temperatures. The battery is excellent and, as a result of the fuel injection, starts the car on the first attempt. The Alfa is currently registered in California and has and always has had a clean title. The engine is very strong and does not smoke, leak fluids, or exhibit any drivability problems what so ever. The Alfa idles smoothly at just below 1000 rpm, does not hesitate, and pulls strongly through the gears and, in typical Alfa fashion, has a wonderful exhaust note. As a result of the 5-speed transmission, the car can be driven easily at highway speeds with absolutely no problem. The characteristically weak 2nd gear syncromesh shows absolutely no weakness in this Alfa as a result of the transmission rebuilt that was completed within the past few hundred miles. The Alfa can easily be down shifted from 3rd gear to 2nd gear at speed, unlike other Alfa Romeo cars that demonstrate weak 2nd gear syncros when this is attempted. Reverse gear engages smoothly, unlike many of the Alfa's that we have driven/owned. Of course, the car absolutely never pops out of reverse or forward gear, and does not have any transmission, rear end noise. We attribute the strength of the transmission to the car having been under the ownership of an enthusiast that did not abuse the car and knew how to drive it. There is no noise in the driveline and the clutch engages properly and without slippage, chattering or fuss. The car steers straight and sure, the brakes work well and stop the car without any pulling, squeaking or noise. The emergency brake is fully functional. We have owned over 15+ Alfa's during the past 25 years and can say with confidence that it is an absolutely terrific example of an Alfa Spider Graduate that can be used and enjoyed. Thank You, Classic Cars Ltd. 925-846-1451 MISCELLANEOUS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) 1. Has it received a safety / light inspection? Yes, the car has been checked for turn signals, brake lights, and license plate lights. 2. What is the total mileage on the Alfa? The odometer currently shows 85,225 and based on the records, there is chronological documentation that the miles are correct. However, with a vehicle of age we are unable to accurately represent the original/actual mileage on the car even though every indication is that the mileage is accurate (refer to repair history/summary). Also, the Car Fax report supports the accuracy of the mileage. 3. Was the work completed by professionals? Yes, all of the mechanical work was done professionally, and to a high standard. No backyard or "Do it yourself" mechanic has worked on this Alfa Romeo Graduate. 4. What were the results of an independent inspection? The Alfa passed with no problem and no safety issues were identified. 5. What are the cars needs (if any) at this time? The vehicle is in good cosmetic condition and, as we have indicated, runs and drives well. The car has been well cared for over the years and it shows. There are no actual needs at this time (see below). 6. Does the car have seat belts? Yes, factory shoulder harnesses (no belts in the rear area). 7. What is the condition of the convertible top and does the frame work function well. The convertible is really excellent with a clear window. It shows no signs of fading and is not ripped, torn or damaged and seals well. The frame is raised and lowered easily and all of the latches are in place. 8. Can we have the vehicle inspected? Absolutely, we encourage inspections of this Alfa by serious, qualified individuals, or professional inspection companies. All we ask is that you call us at 925-846-1451 to arrange a convenient time since we are in and out of our offices quite a bit. We are unable to allow inspections 24 hours prior to the end of the auction as we are closed on Sunday. 9. Can you provide some "ballpark" costs of shipping costs around the United States? Yes, on a fully insured, ENCLOSED carrier (we do not recommend the more common "open" transporters for a car of this caliber) and delivered to your door, about $1500.00 for most of the East Coast, $1300.00 to some of the Southern States, and around $1000 to points in the Midwest. The cost to Los Angeles would be in the area of $500.00. PLEASE check with us as these are just estimates, NOT firm shipping costs, and rates are changing regularly due to fuel costs, exact locations, and other factors. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
