Vehicle Detail

With much regret we are selling our beautiful 1971 classic truck. It is an original California truck that has always been very well maintained. This numbers matching, original factory shortbed truck has been fully restored to mostly original condition, with a few performance and visual upgrades. This restoration has been carefully and expensively executed over a two year “nut and bolt” process, with safety and reliability the main objective. It is also loaded with tons of rare and valuable Factory options, all in like new working condition. Most of the truck is brand new, or the parts were too nice to justify replacement. Some of the many options include the 4 barrel 402 big block engine, Turbo 400 automatic transmission, 12 bolt rear end, power disc brakes, power steering, extra soft seat foam, special sound insulations, a beautiful headliner, walrus grain saddle interior, the factory gauge package with an original Tachometer, and even the very rare and desirable comfort- tilt steering wheel. The engine is a freshly rebuilt 1972 4 bolt main 402 big block Chevy motor, bored .030 over with high compression pistons, and a full Edelbrock internal and external performance package, including their 400 HP camshaft, aluminum intake, and the performance 1411 (750 cfm) electric choke, 4 barrel carburetor. The heads are fully rebuilt with new valves, guides, seals, and unleaded fuel seats. It has chrome valve covers, air cleaner, and timing cover for looks; with a new HEI GM distributor, wires, and plugs for reliable long lasting tuning. The engine starts right up in all weather conditions, and is very smooth, balanced, strong and powerful, and easily rockets the vehicle up to speed with or without any load. The truck idles very nicely at around 650 rpm, with just a hint of the classic muscle car “lope”. They went with the truck’s original stock, cast iron manifolds too, so you never have to worry about leaky headers. The transmission and driveline is also rebuilt. The rebuilt Automatic Turbo 400 3 speed Hydramatic shifts very quickly, but also is smooth, and does not have any harsh shift kits or other modifications. The torque converter is a stock unit, with the original stall speeds. Just a nice, perfectly adjusted automatic transmission. The brand new, custom made one- piece driveshaft is made of special high strength 3 ½”tubing, with racing yokes, and has all new Spicer U-joints, and is perfectly balanced. The bullet proof 12 bolt rear end is geared for comfortable cruising with 3.08 gears, and this drivetrain combination has no trouble melting tires, if you wish… The brakes are new all around from the made in USA Master Cylinder to the heavy duty booster, to the heavy steel vented rotors and Super Duty pads. They are incredibly strong, yet very progressive, and add a level of safety and security not often seen in an older vehicle. The parking brake is also strong and sure. The wheels are old school, period correct, American Racing “Centerline” style 15 X 9’s with high speed rated tires that offer great grip, low road noise, and a smooth controlled ride. No expense was spared on the carefully balanced 235/ 60/ R15 Grand Am Radial GT tires on these lightweight rims. The ride is very smooth, and is compliant and steady. Bumps are absorbed smoothly, and it handles great with a rebuilt steering system with new tie rods, steering arms, ball joints, idler arms, shocks, etc. The truck was recently performance aligned, and tracks straight and true. The chassis sits on new GM rubber body mounts, and the road motions are slow and controlled, and are completely absent of the high frequency jitters common to newer vehicles. The suspension was lowered 3” in the front and 5” in the rear to give it the classic “Muscletruck” look, and the stance is nicely leveled at just ½” higher in the rear than the front. The exhaust is custom made in 2 ½” Aluminized steel, mandrel bent tubing, fully tucked up within the frame rails, so nothing scrapes, or hangs too low. The side swept exhaust exits just in front of the rear wheels, with a “Nascar” inspired look and sound. The mufflers are large 24” free flowing glasspacks, for a mellow sound while cruising, and that perfect growl under acceleration. The interior is also fully restored to its original condition, and is all new. From the specially equipped “Saddle” soft seat foam and comfortable walrus grain vinyl seat cover, to the new dash trim and factory gauges with the very desirable engine Tachometer, the truck surrounds you in comfort and convenience. The original OEM Tilt Steering column was outfitted with a beautiful wood grained steering wheel, reminiscent of the prized corvette 3 spoke wheel. With the all new chrome trims and bezels, with the original style and very soft wood grained door panels, new headliner, high tech sound insulation, new carpet and seat belts, this truck let’s you safely ride in comfort. The heater and defroster are all new, and the system blows strong and lets you drive in cold or rainy weather safely. The AM/ FM stereo/ CD player is a relatively nice unit, and works well with good reception, but is wired to just the under- dash speaker, and could use some upgrading down the road. The cooling system is all new, with a new 4 core radiator, belts, water pump, thermostat, upper and lower hoses, heater hoses, and even a heavy duty fan clutch with the stock 19” 7 blade fan and shroud that is perfectly matched in the correct and original location. The truck operates perfectly in hot weather and/or traffic conditions, and has never even hinted at overheating. It starts right up with the new Interstate Mega Tron battery, new GM starter, and new battery cables. This is a good time to mention that all the wiring from the back of the cab forward is brand new from American Auto Wire in Sacramento, and was done in exactly the correct and original lengths and colors, with the original factory wire ends, shields, looms, etc. All the lights, lamps, gauges, switches, levers, etc work absolutely perfectly and as they did when new. Even the windshield washer pump is new and sprays strong and sure. The rare factory wood plank bed was completely restored with top shelf American Southern Red Oak, and polished stainless steel strips and bolts. The frame underneath was cleaned and painted in gloss black, and everything looks almost as good underneath as up top. The glass, too, is great, with a new windshield and sliding rear window, with the original tinted side and vent windows still in perfectly clear condition. The window beads and seals are original, and not replaced. The window hardware and door lock mechanisms are also original and not replaced. The custom double sealing door seals and sills are brand new though, and now the doors are kind of harder to shut, unfortunately. The body shop said they will break in and compress quickly, and they said it would be a mistake to loosen them up now, just to tighten them up in a month or so. The bumpers are new front and back, and the triple nickel plated chrome is beautiful and shiny. Now on to the body and paint, which are in outstanding condition. The exterior has just this month been repainted in the stock “Hugger Orange” color with high quality PPG base coat/ clear coat paint, and no sheet metal work was done or needed. It has all the original body steel and panels, including the rocker arms, cab supports, doors, fenders, bedsides, cowl supports, cab floors, etc, and these are very nice and straight. No body issues were found during this top quality re-paint. Only a very few trucks from this era are still truly this nice underneath, as it was kept away from the salty Eastern roads or corrosive Western ocean air. There are a few parking lot dings and such in the soft moldings and grille, however, and the tailgate has some inner dents, and the rear wheel housings are original and were not babied. We still felt this vehicle was best left with all original body panels, and it is still a truck of course, and can and should be used as a truck without worrying about a cheap Chinese tailgate bending if you sit on it. This classic muscletruck was built to be driven and enjoyed for another 40 years, and you can take pride in knowing it’s all original USA steel. Well, that’s all we can think of, and we’re hoping the truck makes it to another good home and that you will enjoy it as much as we have. The pictures you see were taken today on June 22, 2010.
