NO RESERVE!! I bought this 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer in February of 2006. I had been looking for a good example of a final year GW to do a full restoration on and this was the 2nd one I actually bought (the first turned out to have a little rust - as most of these do – so I got rid of it). With 1991 as the final year for the fabulous Grand Wagoneer, and BY FAR the rarest – only 1560 were produced. I chose this one because it had a perfectly straight and rust free body. It also ran great, and the interior was in fantastic shape. The truck has 129,040 miles on the odometer, but I’ve replaced virtually every part that would be affected by miles. I basically put the truck in my home shop and started tearing it apart. Over 4 years and well over $17,000 later (and that’s just what I have receipts for), I have lost the space, time, and desire to finish what I started. I know I’m going to take a beating on this one, but I’m getting married this fall and it’s time to grow up (I guess). MECHANICAL As I mentioned, the truck ran well when I bought it, but since I was planning to do a ground up anyway I went ahead and replaced just about everything mechanical on it. All of the reassembly work was done by Space Center Automotive - they had the truck for about 8 months working on it. Since the truck has been back on the road (earlier this year) it has traveled less than 200 miles. Here is a list of the mechanical items that have been replaced on the truck: · Engine – New Long Block from I.C.T. Engines $1377 · Engine Mounts – New from Team GW $39 · Harmonic Balancer Dampener – New $80 · Water Pump – New $27 · Fuel Pump – New $24 · Heater Box – Used $60 · Smog Pump – New $57 · Fan Clutch – New $8 · Power Steering Pump – Remanufactured $98 · Power Steering Pressure Hose – New $53 · AC Compressor – New $425 · Water Pump & Heater Bypass Hoses – New $42 · Engine Dipstick Tube – New from Team GW $14 · Vacuum Renewal Kit – Every hose & connection $60 · Oil Pan & Gasket – New from Grandwagoneers.com $130 · Heat Riser Valve – New from Grandwagoneers.com $65 · Oil Pressure Sending Unit – New $16 · Oil Pressure Switch – New $8 · Water Outlet Housing – New $26 · Temperature Sending Unit – New $28 · PCV Valve – New $4 · Ignition Coil – New $28 · Radiator – New $270 · Thermostat – New $4 · Vacuum Port 1 – New $16 · Vacuum Port 2 – New $45 · Air Injection Pipe Set – New from Team GW $65 · Spark Plugs and Wires & Rotor – New from Team GW $58 · Air Intake Hose Adaptor – New from Team GW $4 · Timing Chain Cover & Kit – New from Team GW $230 · Exhaust Manifolds – New from Team GW $395 · Air Intake Hose – New from Team GW $33 · Air Cleaner Pre-Heater Tube – New from Team GW $8 · Air Cleaner Thermal Vacuum Switch – New, Team GW $20 · Air Canister Filter – New from Team GW $7 · EGR-CTO Switch – New from Team GW $59 · Spark-CTO Switch – New from Team GW $49 · Dual Function Switch – New from Team GW $47 · Delay Valve – New from Team GW $25 · Air Pump Hose Clamps – New from Team GW $3 · Air Cleaner Check Valve – New from Team GW $8 · Emission Vacuum Tee – New from Team GW $8 · Fuel Solenoid Valve – New from Team GW $60 · Air Injection Hose Clamps – New from Team GW $13 · Reverse Delay Valve – New from Team GW $19 · Air Cleaner Flap Valve – New from Team GW $27 · Intake Manifold Gasket Set – New from Team GW $17 · Air Injection Pipe Bolt – New from Team GW $7 · PCV Hose – New from Team GW $17 · Fan & Power Steering Belts – New $27 · Transmission Cooler Hose – New $10 · AC Belt – New $51 · AP Belt – New $20 · Distributor – New $56 · Fuel Filter – New $12 · Radiator Cap – New $8 · Drier / Accumulator – New $56 · Unicoil – New $32 · Carburetor – New $379 · Battery – New $100 · Fuel Sending Unit – New $110 · Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses – New $30 Additionally, virtually every single hose, screw, cable, filter, etc. was replaced – I just don’t have an itemized breakdown of the costs. We used the original intake manifold but had it cleaned and ‘Steelabrated’ at Houston Engine and Balancing. The labor alone to install all my parts and get it running was over $6000! After a great deal of inspection and discussion, it was determined that the transmission and transfer case were in perfect condition so they were flushed and serviced, but not replaced. INTERIOR The Interior of the truck was actually in great shape when I bought it. I was thinking about replacing the carpet since an entire kit is only a few hundred bucks, but the current burgundy carpet has no worn spots and looks great. The leather and inserts on the seats are in outstanding condition. The back seat looks like new (as most do) and even the fronts are pretty close, with the driver’s seat showing the wear you would expect, but no rips or tears or holes. Here are some of the notables regarding the interior: · I had a NEW HEADLINER from Auto Facelifts ($340) installed including the overhead console and sun visors. The old one was sagging, as they all do in Wagoneers. I also had them put a layer of reflective duct insulation between the roof and headliner when they did the job. It’s a little trick I read about that helps with both noise and heat – kind of like radiant barrier for your vehicle! · I installed NEW DOOR LOCK SOLENOID ACTUATORS IN ALL 4 DOORS. A common problem with Wagoneers is that the power door locks stop working. Two of the doors on this truck weren’t working so I ordered 4 new solenoids from Team GW ($150) along with a set of new door actuator rivets and all new door panel fasteners and door panel clips ($47). Since I was going to have to take the door panels off anyway, I figured I might as well replace all the clips. When I started doing the job I realized that all 4 of my old solenoids were working perfectly, but all the mechanisms needed to be cleaned and lubricated. I went ahead and put in the new solenoids and cleaned and lubed everything. I will include the old working solenoids with the truck. I also replaced every door screw with new ones since I had them out anyway. · I installed a NEW KEYLESS ENTRY MODULE KIT. This Wagoneer came with a keyless entry system in ’91, but they never work and I didn’t have the remote anyway. I ordered a new module with remote from Team GW ($175) and installed it in the overhead console. The range isn’t as good as your newer vehicles, but it works. · The steering wheel has the standard worn patch at 12:00 o’clock, but I ordered a new matched (size & color) steering wheel cover from Team GW ($54) and will include it with the truck. I haven’t gotten around to installing it yet because, quite frankly, I’ve never done one before and it seems tricky – sewing is involved. · DASH – The dash is in great shape. No cracks or fading of any kind. All of the lights and gauges work perfectly – even the fuel gauge (common problem) because I had the FUEL TANK SENDING UNIT replaced. While they were doing that, I had them flush and clean the fuel tank. · Another common problem with Grand Wagoneers is the power windows. All of the power windows on this truck work, even the rear glass. The passenger side rear window only works from the driver’s switch, so I’m guessing the rear door switch is bad, but the motor works fine. A used switch is a cheap and readily available part on eBay. The rear glass works from both the switch inside and by using the key in the rear. · Everything on the overhead console works (shocking). The time, temp, and lights. These things cost a fortune to replace, if you can find one, so this is a very good thing. · Power front seats work perfectly. This is also a common and expensive problem so this is also a very good thing. · I bought a used but perfect CARGO COVER ($92) and it’s in the truck. · The power side mirrors worked perfectly until I took the driver’s door panel off to replace the lock solenoid. I had to unplug the switch to get the door panel off and I’m guessing I got something wrong when I put it back on – although it just plugs in so I’m not sure what I could have missed. That said, it’s at worst a switch (very cheap) but more than likely just needs to be plugged back in. · AC is ICE COLD – I basically replaced every part of the AC system. The heater works perfectly as well. All of the controls work as they should. · The Radio is original and works like it’s supposed to. · I purchased NEW STAINLESS DIAMOND PLATE KICK PANELS ($55) that I thought would be cool but never installed them. I’ll include them, but I think I had decided to just stick with the original burgundy ones to keep the originality. EXTERIOR I’ve spent some money on the outside of the truck, but it needs a paint job. It was always my plan to paint it when everything else was done, but I will have to leave that to someone else. Here are the exterior details: · The body is perfectly straight and I can find no indication of any previous body work (that’s why I bought this particular truck). There is no rust (other than the inconsequential surface spots that you can see in the pictures due to the lack of paint – when you paint it they will simply be sanded away in the prep work for primer). The lines and panel fit are as perfect as you will find for a GW. · The paint is old. The truck is 20 years old and the paint is faded on all of the sun exposed surfaces. It needs a paint job to look like a new truck. The wood grain is actually in pretty good condition so you COULD just paint around the existing wood grain (which is what basically EVERYBODY does), but I was going to go ahead and replace it anyway – since I was planning to spend the money for paint I figured I would spend the extra $300 - $700 for the wood grain. · I have basically replaced everything on the front end (see below). The truck has the brackets for the fog lights and the wires are there, but I do not have the original lights (they’re hard to find). I have installed the following: o New Bumper - $270 o New Bumper Guards & Strips - $170 o New Front Bumper Bracket - $40 o New Grill Frame - $220 o New Headlight Bezels - $31 o Headlight Bezel Screw Kit - $16 – why replace something and use old screws? J o Used Grill Insert & Clips - $27 (great condition) o New Hood Ornament - $100 o New License Plate Bracket - $20 o New Front Side Marker Light Housings and Lenses - $40 · The rear bumper is slightly bent. I have kept a passive eye open for a replacement, but don’t have one yet. It’s an easy thing to find, but I was holding out that I could find a new OEM one somewhere. The one on there now is fine, but I was going for perfect. · This truck does have the factory towing package on it – I have never towed anything with it. · This truck was equipped with the dreaded rear wiper. I say dreaded because they never worked right. This one doesn’t work either. Most people just take them off (which was done on this one). Another option is when you have the truck painted, just have them remove the arm nut and fill the half inch hole. I was planning to make it work so I purchased a NEW REAR WIPER ARM ($42) and blade ($5) and a NEW REAR WIPER SWITCH ($14). All are included. There was a web site called grandwagoneers.com that sold a complete kit to fix this problem including the motor. I fear he has gone out of business, however, so I’m not sure where you would look for the motor now. I don’t really know if the motor is the problem, but that’s my guess. It COULD just be the switch, but who knows. It’s VERY difficult to find rear wiper arms, but I’ve taken care of that already with the new OEM one. · The original wheels are all in great shape. I put on a NEW SET OF TIRES (Cooper Discoverer ATRs - $510) and also installed NEW CENTER CAPS ($225) using NEW CENTER CAP SCREWS ($6). · The glass is all perfect except the windshield – it has a large crack on the passenger side. They are cheap and it was going to be one of the last things I had done. · The roof rack is in great shape. I actually bought a NEW OEM GRAND WAGONEER SKI RACK that is still in the box that I’ll include. I never expected to hit the slopes in this thing (I live in Houston) but I have never seen one before or since so I had to buy it. ($355) I will also include every part I have purchased but not installed. Basically, if I have it and it has anything to do with this Jeep, it’s yours. That includes NEW UNDER HOOD INSULATION ($95) – NEW HOOD COWL SEAL ($15) – all the extra parts I mentioned in the text above and anything else I can find. I have two sets of keys but only one remote. I’m not crazy about selling this truck. When I bought it I had about 12 vehicles and plenty of garage space. We have moved into a home with only a 3 car garage and I’ve had to get rid of a number of vehicles. I’m down to 5 and really need to get it down to 3. This one and my ’75 INDY Pace Car are going to have to go. I probably have about $20,000 in the truck but that’s basically irrelevant. I was sparing no expense because I planned to keep this thing forever after it was done. It’s really very close to rivaling the Grand Wagoneers you can buy from Wagonmasters – it just needs paint and some final details and a little tweaking. Please keep in mind that it’s 20 years old and carbureted. It’s not perfect (yet) but I’ve gone a LONG WAY towards making it so. If I painted it, it would be worth A LOT more, but I just have too many other things going on right now. This would make a good truck as it is, and a GREAT truck if you want a really nice and rare Woody Wagon to drive or show with just a few things left to do. My loss, your gain. The truck is registered and emissions inspected in Texas. I have a clear title and will sign it over to the winning bidder after payment is received. Please ask any questions and I’ll get back to you ASAP. If you want to talk to me about the truck just e-mail me your number and I’ll be happy to call you. I’m listing it as a legitimate NO RESERVE auction because I need the space more than the money. I know someone is going to steal it, but I promise not to report you to the police! Good luck.
