Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is this beautiful, rare and really unusual 1970 Ford Mustang rumble-seat convertible. I'm selling this for a friend who has owned it for many years, and no longer has the space to garage it. Built in Dearborn, Michigan, it is one of only 7,673 convertible Mustangs produced in 1970. The car is in excellent shape and has only 57,700 actual miles. I've tried to research this rare option, and have only found a few mentions of it on the web... Barrett-Jackson sold one (lot 428.1) in 2007, and in part the description reads- An extremely rare and most unusual Mustang; a "rumble-seat convertible". This particular package was a joint effort by Ford and Autocraft of Dearborn, MI. The option was not shown on the build sheet or Ford window sticker because the conversion was done after assembly. It was a "Blossom-Time" sales promotion offered only during April 1969 to certain Michigan dealers. Documented by 2 different magazine articles, it is still un-certain exactly how many were done. This one is believed to be the only one in "Meadowlark Yellow". This one was built April 16, 1969 and delivered to Jack Dykstra Ford in Lansing, MI. It is V8, automatic, power steering, power disc brakes, power top, factory tach, and more. It has only 55,000 actual miles and original upholstery, mechanically refreshed and ready to go. I've also seen photographs of a "Playboy" rumble-seat Mustang... and both the Barrett-Jackson & "Playboy" Mustang have the same fittings and heavy-duty hardware as this vehicle. On the rear of the Mustang is the dealer plate "Ray Smith"... if anyone knows where that dealership was (or still is), please let me know. I've just ordered a Marti report today, and I'll post the info. as soon as I receive it. As for the details on this car- the exterior is finished in white with an extremely subtle blue pearl, white convertible top, with a medium blue interior, rumble-seat and boot. Options include 302 two-barrel V8 with chrome dress kit, automatic, power steering, power disc brakes, AM radio, and power convertible top. Front and rear seats have brand new reproduction covers, paint is at least 25 years old but is very nice condition (normal amount of small touched up chips/scratches) for it's age. The top is in usable condition, and the window is not cloudy or cracked. Original carb was rebuilt last year. No rust damage or repairs. Tires are in new condition. The car runs and drives like a dream! I drove it on the freeway and along Mulholland Drive with the rumble-seat open just for fun, and it felt as solid as it does with it closed. I'm happy to arrange a vehicle inspection/test drive for any serious bidder. Reserve is very fair & realistic. Please feel free to ask any questions that I haven't addressed, or if you have any information that would be helpful regarding this unique vehicle and the rumble-seat option- myself and many Mustang fans would love to hear it!On Jun-17-10 at 09:16:24 PDT, seller added the following information: Update... first off, thanks for all the interest in this really unique Mustang! Almost 2,000 views, hundreds of watchers, and some great questions & bits of info. on rumble-seat Mustangs. The reserve has been met, so top bidder will win it! I just received the Marti report (build info. on the vehicle) which will go with the car- and it shows that this '70 Mustang was built on October 16th, 1969 (two days behind schedule) and was purchased by dealer 53A006 of the Kansas City ordering district. A really helpful bidder informed me that there was (and still is!) a Ray Smith Ford dealership in Kansas City... so it may be possible to get some info/documentation on the rumble-seat from them. Again, thanks for the interest, feel free to ask any other questions... and good luck!
