Vehicle Detail

1992 Mercedes-Benz 300D 5-Cylinder 2.5L Turbo-Diesel We bought this car about 6 years ago from the previous owner who kept all of his maintenance records. There were about 235,000 miles on it at the time. My son drove it down to Arizona 4 years ago and it has been there ever since. My wife and I drive it when we come to Phoenix to vist family. It's given us good service and runs well. It is in reasonable condition for a car of this year. It's always started – even on cold Chicago winter days. This turbo-diesel engine has given me no problems except for a couple of drops of oil on the pavement when I shut it off. The fuel mileage is pretty good for a car as solidly built as it is…30+ mpg/hwy. Recently, I had a new alternator put in and also two new front tires, a front end alignment, an oil and filter change, a front headlight, and a new wiper blade. This is a non-smoker's car. I have the original owner’s manual for it. The car is in Phoenix, AZ right now. Here are some options/features on this car: Alloy Wheels; Good Rear Tires…Front Ones are NEW; Anti-lock Brake System; Driver Air Bag; Fog Lamps; Seats in overall good condition; Power Brakes; Power Central Locking System; Power Front Seats; Power Rear Head Restraints; Power Steering: Power Windows; Sliding Sun Roof with Rear Pop-up Feature; 3 Keys – Master, Valet, Flat Wallet Key; 4-Speed Automatic Transmission. I am not a mechanic but, so you can better decide on this car, I will now list all the things that I believe may need attention if you want to spend the money or can fix it yourself. Most are minor. The car will get you from here to there as is. The air conditioning was working last summer but it is not working now…not sure what is wrong. The cruise control does not work. The driver side mirror inside adjustment arm broke off. (I just adjust it externally. The passenger side power mirror adjustment works fine.) The car has some repairable rust spots on it, most notably on the top of the front passenger door frame, the right rear passenger door threshold, and by top left rear corner window molding (see photos) - this due to the car originally being from up north. There's a few other spots which I would consider minor. There are the usual minor dings on the outside for a car of this year - but no major damage. The rear power antenna broke off at the car wash. I have another one but never had it installed. Sometimes I have to push the console gear shifter a fraction more front-ways to put it in reverse. The transmission works fine. The pre-glow dash indicator lamp symbol does not work. The pre-glow buzzer indicator will tell you when to start the engine. The front and rear overhead passenger reading lamps are out…possibly new bulbs will correct that. (There is still a top/front inside light that works fine for reading.) The left instrument cluster light (there are 3) for some reason takes a few minutes of driving before coming on. There are small screw holes on inside of driver’s door where last owner had put a cup holder for his wife. There is an indicator lamp symbol that stays on for an exterior light being out but all exterior lights do work. The plastic visor end clips broke so I just replaced them with small metal “J” hooks from the hardware store. The fabric edge on the inside passenger side door jam needs to be glued back in place. There may be a few other minor things wrong but they don’t affect the overall driving condition. On a flat, open highway, this car will cruise beautifully at 75mph all day...a smooth and comfortable ride. It really hugs the road. It is not unusual for these diesel engines to keep on going for a long, long time. The previous owner told me he got 450,000 miles out of his last Mercedes diesel before trading it in for this one. I’ve also heard that this is one of the best diesels for converting to run on bio-diesel or straight vegetable oil (SVO). So if you’re looking for a solid, good riding car, with good fuel mileage and for what I believe is a reasonably low reserve…this may be for you. ******************************* The winning bidder is to pay a deposit of $500, via PayPal only, that is required within 24 hours of the auction’s end. The car must be picked up within one week of the auction’s end and, at that time, the rest of the balance is due in person - in cash. We’ll make exact arrangements at the auction’s end with the winning bidder. The car has clear title and it must be properly transferred to the new owner at a local notary before removing it. The buyer is then immediately responsible for removing the vehicle. Please ask questions about anything if you’re interested in bidding and I’ll do my best to answer. Thanks. Good Luck and Happy Bidding!
