1980 Diesel Rabbit, 1.6, 2-Door, Sunroof This 1980 diesel Rabbit C is an early Westy 2-door hatchback with a sunroof. It runs and drives very well and has been inspected by our VW diesel mechanic. The timing belt/tensioner have been replaced and one of the motor mounts has been changed. Some of the wiring under the hood has been replaced but there is still some wires that need to be fixed. The engine is the 1.6 diesel and it runs nicely with no complaints. We have installed an analog temperature gauge to keep tabs on things. This Rabbit needs a paint job. It is currently registered California Non-Operational (see for details: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffvr01.htm ). Please see below for more details about this cool Rabbit: Body: The body is very straight. There are a couple spots that have surface rust (see pix). The shock towers are rust-free and the floorpan nice and solid. The car sports a rattle-can paint job. It definitely needs professional help with a decent paint job. The sunroof needs a new seal. The sunroof crank is very stiff and we have not cranked it for fear of breaking it. The windshield is cracked but does not leak. The Rabbit has been here in Southern California where it is in a low humidity desert environment. All lights and turn signals work properly. There is some silicon on the vent window seals. It has a rear wiper but it doesn't work. Interior: The bright red interior has fared pretty well over the years. The back seat is nice, there are some tears in the drivers seat, the carpet needs a deep shampoo. There is some sun fading on areas of the plastic interior parts. The dash has the typical cracks. The headliner needs to be replaced. The door cards look pretty good, although someone cut holes for speakers (see pic). Engine: This is the tried and true 1.6 diesel and it runs very well. It starts right up with no complaints and rattles along happily. The timing belt and tensioner have been replaced and one of the motor mounts as well. Some of the wiring under the hood has been repaired or replaced but there is still work to be done there. The alternator may be acting up and another will be included with the car. The odometer states 92,392 miles. We cannot guarantee the odometer reading to be accurate, as it has no sixth place. Transmission: This is a four-speed manual and it shifts fine with no clutch issues or weird noises. Axles are in good shape. Suspension/Brakes: The struts are sound and the power brakes work fine. Tires have minimal wear. The car handles and stops well. Documentation/Registration: This vehicle is on California Planned Non-Operational registration. What this amounts to is that in the state of California, if you decide to park your vehicle and not renew regular yearly registration, you are still taxed for the parked car. No DMV fees are owed on this car. In order to register the car for normal operation, the required DMV fees will have to be paid, plus sales tax. For out-of-state buyers, please consult your DMV for registration fees. All paperwork is in order, with the title in hand and clear. This is not a salvage vehicle. This is a great little classic VW with a very reasonable reserve. It's in nice enough shape to be a daily driver, getting 40-50 mpg.
