The question is going to come up as to why I am selling this bike. Here it is, one time only. This is not open for discussion or commentary. I bought this bike as a gift for my son. I had it restored and set it up for him using my years of experience as a guide. Shortly after completion my son was murdered. He never got to ride the bike though he shared in its progress from purchase to completion. Today, a day following the second anniversary of his death, I realize that my emotional burden associated with this bike is more than I can bear. The time has come to set it free.. That’s it! End of discussion. Please,,,be gracious, keep your thoughts to yourself. THE BIKE: “El Diablo” A most unique vintage 77 R100RS is offered. VIN# is 6180666 and hence the moniker I gave this bike. This is a NO RESERVE auction and has a buy it now option for those that may want to forego the auction and make sure this one does not get away. Benson: You should buy this for the lad and give it to him for his 21st birthday. I am going to describe this bike to the best of my ability (I am of course, not perfect) but I’m sure I’ll forget something. Please read everything carefully and ask any questions you have before the purchase is done. El Diablo has undergone cosmetic and mechanical restoration. The cosmetic work was done by Autobahn Craftwerks in the winter of 05 and the mechanicals were done incrementally by Miami Cycle Works Inc or a member of its staff. All work was performed in Cincinnati, Ohio. The bike has approximately 2,000 miles since cosmetic restoration was performed and as little as 500 miles on some of the mechanicals. This listing will contain a short list and a narrative followed by the legal, the terms, and the shipping options. Everything that says new was exactly that. If the buy it now option is used, the purchaser will receive the following items: A tall windshield, a complete Krauser bag setup (with rear rack, backrest, bag mounts, t/s re-locators, and a “Corbin Daylong” seat (I know I just made up the term, but it’s the best way to describe the seat). The Corbin seat is vintage and looks just like a Russell Daylong. All mounts are bead blasted and ready for whatever you wish to do with them. The original speedometer (with non working odometer) will also be included in the “buy it now” package deal. I’m sure I’ve forgotten something. NARRATIVE I bought this bike for my son as a “project” from a guy in New York City. As memory serves me I think he was second or third owner. The bike was cosmetically worn and mechanically in need of service; that said it was an unmolested 1977 R100RS with a cool VIN. This bike is one of 1472 built by BMW for the USA, Canada, & Australia markets with VIN’s beginning with 618xxxx. These bikes are very sought after. BMW made an additional 6136 inits for the European, Asia, & Africa markets with VIN’s beginning with 608xxxx. (source: BMW R100RS book by Bill Stermer) I got it running without much ado, but the first two years it basically sat with bi-weekly riding long enough for the bike to reach full operating temperature. I commissioned Autobahn Craftwerks to perform the cosmetic restoration. We replaced any body panels that had significant damage, replaced and upgraded all sorts of parts and hardware. Lenny and I agreed the best outcome for the frame finish was one where a flex agent (such as those used when finishing flexible bumpers) added to the paint would provide best overall appearance, performance and longevity. The paint was done in Galsurit and a Rocky Point Cycle stainless steel fastener kit was used for the re-assembly. The bike and rims were hand striped by Dauber. The mechanicals were done by some of the best BMW techs this side of the Mississippi. If you read the list above you understand that this motorcycle was readied for extended long distance touring. The engine has close to 100k and has lots and lots of miles left. At the time of re-seal, the results of the inspection of rings and cylinders were so good, I elected to break the glazing in the cylinders and reassemble with original rings. I am happy with that decision; it was the correct thing to do. The bike runs and rides great!!! All one has to do is figure out the cost of the parts & labor to restore the bike and one can see what a great deal this is. Legal & Warranty This bike is sold “as is where is” with no warranties implied. By bidding on this bike, you are entering a legal and binding contract. Terms The terms are: A non-refundable deposit for $1,000.00 is due within 24 hours of this auctions end. Deposit can be made via PayPal, Bank Draft, Cash, or USPS money order. The only forms of payment acceptable for the balance are either a Bank Draft, Cash, or USPS money orders. In either case the funds must clear before I will release the bike for shipment.SALE IS FINAL. Shipping/Delivery I am willing to deliver the bike for a fee of 50¢ per mile (each way) but payment must be made in advance. That is, if you want me to deliver it 200 miles away it will cost you $200.00. For you folks on the West coast that could get expensive, so for distances over 500 miles, I may be willing to deliver the bike for a negotiated flat fee. I am willing to assist in loading the bike on other forms of transportation but preparation, getting quotes, and making arrangements are not my responsibility. GOOD LUCK ON THIS AUCTION.
