Vehicle Detail

You are viewing my 1966 Chevelle SS396 that came from the factory with a 4 speed and bucket seats. This is a beautiful and rare local barn find. This car was found just 30 miles from my house and is in good restorable condition. This car still retains most of its original sheet metal although it needs floors and a few other panels, the quarters, doors, fenders, etc seem to be in good shape. When I picked the car up, the previous owner told me that it was ordered to be a driver/weekend racer and was sold new up north. He said that a friend of his bought it in the 70s and brought it back here. According to him, its been in this part of Mississippi since then. He said that it came with a 375hp L-78 396, but, you know as well as I do, that with no proof, its just another SS thats undocumented. He did tell me as I was leaving with the car that the original intake manifold was in the trunk....well, sure enough, when I got it to my shop, I opened the trunk and there sat a 66 date coded winters aluminum intake. Still, its just an intake, but it does add a small amount of fact to the story that he told me about the car. Also another nice thing about it, is that it doesnt have power steering, power brakes, or a/c.....it is a very low optioned car, so it very well couldve been an L-78 car. He also told me that the mileage was supposed to be right, but I have no proof of that either. I have no documentation other than a clean Mississippi title. I love 66 Chevelles and when I ran across this one, I couldnt turn it down. I was in the market for a good restored Chevelle when I found this one. I knew that it wouldnt take just a ton of money or work to restore this one, but only 4 days after I bought it, I found an unrestored survivor 66 SS 4 speed and decided to buy it and sell this one. Please take the time to read this entire listing and please view all the extra picture links that I have posted. Just click the photobucket link and you will be taken to the picture of what I have described. Here are the details: 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 VIN: 138176G133567 (13817- SS Sport Coupe, 6- 1966 year model, G- Built in Framingham, MA, 133567- production number) Pictures of VIN: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08936.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08937.jpg Trim Tag: 06B (2nd week of June) ST 66 - 13817 FRA 4560 BDY (Year model 66, 13817 SS Hardtop Sport Coupe, FRA- Framingham, 4560- Fisher body number) TR 763-B N - N (763-B- Black Bucket Seats, N-N- Madiera Maroon with no vinyl top) 2LG (2- Second option group, L- 4 speed, G- Console) Picture of Trim Tag: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08900.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/MVC-006F2.jpg Now that we know what this car originally came with, I'll begin to describe its current condition. Below, I will details about this Chevelle's exterior body panels, under carriage, interior, and drivetrain: Exterior Starting with the front, this Chevelle retains is original grille that is still riveted in. It has never been removed from what I can tell. This car was drag raced at some point of its life, and the original engine was equiped with a blower. The original hood was cut to handle the blower. They cut out a square section which included the louvers. Later in its life, the original engine blew and the car was sold with the cut hood. The hood was replaced with a malibu hood, but was cut out to install the old original louvers. There is a square cut in the center of the hood that is noticable if you are looking for it. I would certainly replace the hood. The louvers are fine. I was also told that the car was once maroon with orange accents....I couldnt imagine an uglier color combo, but thats the way they raced it. You can see some traces of orange on the tail light extensions. The Fenders are in very good condition even at the bottom. They are original and you can tell by looking under the hood that they are original SS fenders because of the holes for the 396 badges on the inside. The doors are original and seem to be very good. The rockers are excellent. The quarters are original and seem fine and usable although they seem to have a bit of bondo in them near the bottom. The bottoms of the quarters are not rusty and factory metal can be seen on the bottom and bottom side underneath. There is an antenna installed on each quarter panel. The rear panel is fine and completely usable. The deck lid/trunk lid is usable too, just has a dime size rust bubble on it and some of it is primered. The roof is just about as nice as you can get. Around the back glass is not good. It shows signs of rust on the bottom of the back glass trim. I raised up the trim to take a picture of it. Here are some detailed exterior pictures: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08849.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08850.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08851.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08866.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08867.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08868.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08869.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08870.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08871.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08872.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08873.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08874.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08877.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08884.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08885.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08886.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08887.jpg Under Carriage The undercarriage is not perfect, but it is certainly better than some that Ive seen. The original crossmember is still intact for the 4 speed. When the car was raced, it had side pipes installed. Those plates are still on the frame (one small one on each side). The floors aren't perfect by any means, but they could be patched without a lot of effort. If someone were to make this into a driver, the floors would be fine if they were patched, but if someone were restoring this to be a Concours show car, they would certainly have to be replaced. The firewall bottom is in good shape. The trunk pan would most definitely have to be replaced. It has a few small holes and quiet a few large ones. The trunk was cut at some point to get to the fuel lines from the top side. You'll notice this in the pictures Im sure. I also think the speaker panel was cut to add speakers to the hat rack, but I dont know this for sure because I havent taken any of the interior out. The frame is in very good shape. The wheel wells are in good shape as far as I can tell. Here are a few pictures of this Chevelles under carriage: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08852.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08853.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08854.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08855.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08856.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08857.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08858.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08859.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08860.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08875.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08876.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08878.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08879.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08880.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08881.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08882.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08883.jpg Interior The interior is not in great shape as you can tell from the pictures. The carpet is original, it has the factory gauge package, so no idiot lights with this one :) The dash is all there, but the pad would need to be replaced. The dash metal is excellent even on the front under the windshield. There are a few aftermarket gauges installed and there is not a knee knocker tach in there. The seats, door panels, headliner, and speaker panel have been recovered at some point. The car has a 70s SS steering wheel and a hurst shifter that looks/feels terrible. I have never had the interior out of the car nor have I looked for a build sheet, so maybe someone will get lucky with this one and find that thing. Wouldnt it be nice if it showed an L-78 option code on there? Again, Im not saying that this car is an original L-78 375hp car, but I am saying that it is possible. Drivetrain This car is equiped with a 1966 396 engine, but it is not the original. It is actually a 325hp Impala engine. It is a correct "961" block which is a 66 2 bolt main block and it has an impala CON VIN stamped into the deck. All the date codes on the engine match the engine, not the car. The car was a late build car and all the engine date codes (heads, intake, etc) are early build parts. The Harrision radiator is even from an Impala. The 4 speed transmission is from a 68 I believe and it has a VIN on it as well. I didnt write it down because I wasnt worried about it since it wasnt its original one. The rearends date code falls right in line with the build of the car and it is coded "CF" which is a 3.31 posi. Now, this falls right in with what the previous owner said about it being a driver/weekend racer. Normally you wouldve received a 3.73+ with an L-78 car, but if he wanted a nice driver for the regular week days, he wouldve chose a 3.31 most likely. Currently, the car is geared REALLY low. It is not a streetable rearend. I have driven it a few times and I have to shift all the way to 4th before I get out of my driveway. It does run/drive/brake but I cant seem to find reverse. Im sure reverse is there, but the shifter is so tight, I cant get it into reverse. The rearend probably has 4.88s in there now. It also has headers on it now and I do NOT have the original manifolds. Here are a few pictures of the cars current engine, transmission, and rearend: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08861.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08862.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08863.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08864.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08865.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08897.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08898.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08899.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08901.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08902.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08903.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08904.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08905.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08906.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08907.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08908.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08909.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08915.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08916.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08917.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/DSC08919.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/MVC-002F2.jpg Here are a few pictures of the Winters intake that was found in the trunk: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/MVC-001F.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/MVC-002F.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/MVC-003F.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/MVC-004F.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/mattl38829/1966%20Chevelle%20NN/MVC-005F.jpg The car is being sold as is with no warranty or gaurantee.
