Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 You are bidding on an opportunity to own a unique piece of automotive history and a very rare Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler. New in 1985, this Jeep came from the factory with the rare (due to the mid ‘80s gas crunch) inline 6 cylinder 4.2L engine with an automatic three speed transmission. AMC only sold a total of 2015 Scramblers in 1985 and this was the last year of Scrambler production. The factory automatic makes this one even rarer. This vehicle has undergone a complete frame-off restoration over the last three years and is now the cleanest CJ-8 you will find. Here is a detailed description of the work that was done: The vehicle was completely disassembled down to every last nut and bolt. The rear frame crossmember was ground off and a new crossmember was welded on. The whole frame was sand blasted and powder coated gloss black by an industrial paint stripping and painting company. The frame was baked in a 350 degree oven for four hours which removes 100% of all moisture from the frame. After the frame was done, new Skyjacker 2.5” lift springs were installed with urethane bushings on the original Dana 30 and AMC 20 axles. New draglink ends, Skyjacker shocks, steering stabilizer and bushings, stainless steel brake lines and all new fuel lines were added. NO pipe, line, hose, or wire was re-used during chassis assembly; everything is brand new and better than stock! 33x12.50x17 mud tires and aluminum wheels were installed. The tires are not new but have about 50% tread left. New tube bumpers were installed front and rear. The factory original 4.2L inline six cylinder engine was completely disassembled, the block and head were dipped in acid, the block was honed, and then the engine was reassembled using all new bearings, gaskets and seals. The ridiculous factory carb and intake were junked and an Clifford aluminum intake and Holley 390 CFM four barrel carb with electric choke were installed instead. A new radiator with built-in transmission cooler was installed with new lines and hoses. New double outlet Hedman headers feed a single 2.25” exhaust system with a new catalytic converter and new performance muffler. The engine was reinstalled on new engine mounts with the factory frame support having new gloss black powder coating as well. The 3 speed Torqueflight 999 automatic transmission and Dana 300 transfercase were not rebuilt because they are both working fine already. The center frame cross member was also powder coated to match the frame. Both the front and rear driveshafts were rebuilt with new Dana U-joints, painted flat black, and balanced by a pro driveshaft shop. The power steering motor was also rebuilt with new bearings and seals. Once the rolling chassis was complete, a Shell Valley fiberglass tub was installed on the frame. The inside of the tub was sprayed with a two-part truck bedliner system like Line-X to give it some texture and more strength. The original steel tailgate, front fenders, hood, and front grill were cleaned up and reinstalled on the tub. A new steel dash and windshield frame were installed. The whole vehicle was sanded, primed, and sprayed with two coats of copper metallic paint. The body is perfectly straight with no dents at all. One of the major upgrades over a stock Scrambler I did was to use a hydroboost power breaking system instead of the original vacuum booster. This system uses hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump and creates much more breaking pressure than the stock system. When you stand on the break pedal, it can lock up all four 33” tires on dry pavement. Try that on a normal CJ with oversize tires! All engine and chassis wiring is brand new high-temp automotive wire. The factory under-dash harness was reused because it was in good shape. All switches, sensors, sending units, lights, and the speedometer/fuel/temp gauge unit are brand new. New 6” Hella driving lights were installed on the front bumper and wired into the high-beam circuit with a defeat switch on the dash. A new battery, battery cables, starter and starter solenoid were installed. A new Sony CD sound system and Sony 6x9 speakers were installed in sealed speaker boxes in the bed of the vehicle. All electrical items work perfectly. All mirrors, windshield hardware, hood hardware, center console, glass and rubber items are also brand new. A new strapless bikini top is also included. In summary, this vehicle is basically brand new. There are hundreds of other new parts not mentioned above. Basically, the axles, transmission, engine block and head are the only not-new parts. There is no rust and it’s not likely to ever start rusting since the frame and chassis hardware has been powder coated and the tub is fiberglass. The mileage since rebuild is only 30 miles! It has never been off of pavement but is ready to go if you want to do it. Several of these pictures have glare and reflections that look like imperfections but none are really there. Metallic paint never seems to photograph well. Like every vehicle, there are always things that are not perfect so I’ll address the items I know about: The axle ratio in the factory axles is 2.73. This is not a good ratio for 33” tires and you can’t exactly smoke the tires on pavement. I planned to change this to 3.73 or 4.10 at some point but never got around to it. The plus side is that it will cruise down the road comfortably at 60 MPH.The rear diff cover is the only thing leaking on this whole Jeep. I planned to address this when I changed the ring and pinion but never did. It is not a bad leak but it is leaking.Like most carbureted vehicles, this Jeep doesn’t idle well or have great throttle response until it is warm. The engine always starts right up and maybe you are better at tuning carbs than I am.The paint on this Jeep was not sprayed in a professional paint booth and therefore does not look like a new car finish. It was a “garage spray job” so you can see imperfections when you examine it closely because the static caused by the paint leaving the gun attracts dust from the air. As you can see in the pictures, it looks pretty good for a garage job. There is a scratch in the paint on the dash under the driver side windshield to dash mounting tab. This happened when I towed the vehicle with the windshield up but not screwed in securely. The two seats in this Jeep don’t match exactly. They are both black buckets but one says “CJ” on it and the other does not. They are both in good shape. The steering column from my parts Scrambler had a damaged transmission gear display (the thing that says PRND21). The previous owner glued it back on but you can tell it was glued on.The roll bar is only bolted to the tub and not tied into the frame. Obviously, you would need to do this before going off road and risking a roll-over.There is no tailpipe after the muffler. I never saw the need. In recent years, the Scramblers have spiked in popularity as they become more any more difficult to find. You can find Scramblers for sale around the country for $20,000 or more in worse condition than this Jeep. Check this one out: http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/jeep/scrambler/1038670.html You can read all about the Scrambler’s history at http://www.cj-8.com or http://www.jeep-scrambler.com/ or join the Scrambler’s Owners Association at http://www.cj-8.org Here is what is included with this auction: One excellent condition and very rare Jeep Scrambler with a bikini top. Nothing else. No doors, no other tops, no other accessories that are not already bolted on and shown in these pictures. I have a clear Virginia Title in hand. Auction Terms: A $500 deposit is due via PayPal within 48 hours of the close of the auction. The remainder must be paid with a Cashier’s Check from a bank. The Jeep must be picked up within a week of the close of the auction unless you set up something with me BEFORE the end of the auction. Note my high feedback rating and several of these feedbacks are for buying and selling cars and boats on ebay. This Jeep is being sold as-is where-is. The winning bidder is responsible for picking up the vehicle. I can help load it on your trailer if you want to tow it. Why am I selling it? Because it is finished. It took me almost three years to build it in my spare time and now I’m ready for the next project and need the garage space. This is the third CJ I have built from the ground up. I sold the last one for $15,000. If you have questions, then please email me through ebay. Please don’t offer any trades unless you have a 22 through 26 foot bowrider ski boat you want to trade.
