EARL WILL BE GOING TO ENGLAND IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS TO HAND PICK A BUNCH FOR THE COMING MONTHS, SO WITH THAT BEING SAID IT BRINGS US TO THIS 1968 OLDSMOBILE 442 OLD SCHOOL MUSCLE. THIS ONE WAS FOUND LANGUISHING IN STORAGE FOR A GOOD NUMBER OF YEARS. WHEN I FOUND IT I GAS IT UP PUT SOME AIR IN A COUPLE TIRES AND DROVE IT OVER 100 MILES. WITHOUT DOING A THING TO IT I DECIDED TO PUT IT UP HERE ON EBAY JUST THE WAY I FOUND IT. NOT EVEN WASHING IT MUD BEHIND THE WHEELS AND ALL. COULD USE A GOOD CLEANING AND A GOOD TUNE UP AND SOME LEADED GAS. SHIFTS GREAT WITH A GOOD CLUTCH. VERY GOOD DRIVER. ALL THE LIGHTS WORK AND THE WIPERS. TIRES ARE RAISED WHITE LETTER DATED BUT STILL DECENT. HAS THE ORIGINAL PAINT CODED RALLY WHEELS. IT RAN SUPER ON THE HIGHWAY. PRETTY MUCH ALL ORIGINAL. HAVE THE FACTORY RADIO AND SHIFTER. THE CARB WAS CHANGED BUT HAVE THE FACTORY ONE. 400 CUBIC INCH ENGINE WITH 325 HORSE POWER. THE ORIGINAL 442 STOOD FOR 4 SPEED 4 BARREL DUEL EXHAUST WHICH THIS ONE HAS MAKING IT IN REALITY A REAL ONE. IT DOES HAVE A 391 GEAR RATIO IN THE REAR END. TAKE A LOOK AT THE 60 PLUS PICTURES IN THE GALLERY BELOW AND THE VIDEO OF THE CAR AND REMEMBER IT IS JUST THE WAY I FOUND IT IN STORAGE NOTHING DONE TO IT AT ALL AND YOU CAN SEE THAT IT IS A SOLID FIND. All 1968 442s have 344878... VINs, but the body data plates for those years will carry a 3687... designation. This is well documented and nothing to worry about. Similarly, the sequence number on the body data plate will not match the last six digits of the VIN (except in the event of an extreme coincidence), since these were Fisher Body numbers, not VINs. To sum up, while the body data plates on the 68-69 cars carried Cutlass body numbers, the VIN for a 68 442 must start out 344878. Look for the casting number and letter on the horizontal shelf right behind the water pump, just to the [driver's] right of the oil pressure sensor. The casting numbers are usually about ¾" - 1" tall, and the ID/Code is usually a bit larger, a little over an inch, and covered with schmutz. The most common block will be the standard 455: "396021 F" or "396021 Fa". The "a", as in Fa, is actually an upper case A, but about ¼ as big as the F, and subscript to the F [set lower]. Also, on the 231788L block, the "L" is the same size as most of the rest of the digits, whereas the numberal "7" is noticeably smaller. THE MOST COMMON BLOCK 442'S USED IN 1968 WERE BUILT FROM 455 BLOCKS SEE ABOVE 400's were bronze in color, most 425's and early 455's (1968, 1969) were red, while Toronado 425's and later 455's were blue. However, since engine color may have been changed, use this as supporting evidence only you can see the bronze under the blue all over this engine THESE ARE ALL THE HEAD NUMBERS THAT APPEAR ON THE MOTOR The VIN derivative stamping or engine unit number on the left most side of the block, on the driver's side, just below the cylinder head, toward the front. The pad is part of the engine and will indicate the year of manufacture, but that is usually rusted beyond recognition, and it can be changed by restamping. If the engine was replaced under warranty, the pad may be blank. Rubbing alcohol and Q-tips help to remove the grime and grit from the stamping. The VIN derivative on 68-up blocks doesn't tie directly to the type of car it was installed in (unless you have some way to unambiguously trace the last six digits of the VIN), however it _can_ provide some indirect evidence. If the production plant (third place in the VIN derivative) was one at which no 442s were built (KC, for example), then it obviously isn't a 442 motor. Of couse, you have no way of knowing for sure that the heads were originally installed on that block or not.
