You can restore a car, BUT IT IS ONLY ORIGINAL ONCE!! Welcome to my LIVE AUCTION for this original 1971 911E. THIS IS A NO RESERVE AUCTION THAT I WILL NOT END EARLY!! This car is Burgundy from the factory! A very unique color and one that really has depth to show off the lines of the vintage 911! Only nine hundred and some 911 'E' Targas were made in 1971. This is hands down one of the nicest car that I have come across in all of my years of being a Vw/Porsche restoration artist-mechanic. For over 20 years, I have been repairing friends cars, started worked in Vw/Porsche specific restoration shops in the 90's, owned and run a very successful Vw-Porsche repair and restoration shop in Sunny Tucson, Arizona for over 15 years. Of all of the cars that I have come across, this is of the finest example of a car to restore. I have been forced to put off my restoration of this car as I had a son born right about the time that I scheduled my start of the project. Little to say, I soon did not have the time to spend wrenching on my own cars! I purchased this car from a sports car collector years ago as a project for myself. He knew me and my previous 911 that I had fixed up over the years, understood my passions, and wanted this car to go to me. What you will see here has been my passion for years and as I have been having to consciously delay my start, and now with a plan to move to a new city, a sale for me is seeming like my smartest choice. I look forward to knowing that someone will have the enjoyment of this wonderful project, I pass it on!! I do have another project too (so, don't feel too bad for me :)), and I can see the sale of this car funding my other and moving me to San Francisco, where I will of course, continue restoring 911's (So, look me up there, @ The Stable, in Nob Hill). Some key points of this car; A few of the most important things to me concerning what makes the best of projects, is the original badges being in excellent condition, an obvious history of the car showing non-use and ultimate care. Particularly important to me as I just browse other's cars for sale are the i.d. plates, particularly the driver's door tag. I would have to say that 90% of these tags are hammered. Most of the time I wonder how they are so mistreated. I understand painting the jams and getting a spot of over spray, but so many look criminal. This is one of my favorite things about this car, hands down. This tag, as all of the others, is immaculate, and the door jams are still in the factory original paint. Nobody has been in there swinging sandpaper or thinner to clean up (destroying) the badges. The lack of rust, even when digging in to look for it. Take note of the easily over a hundred photos of this car, photos of me digging! I really anticipated these to be for me and my book of the car, but are yours to carry as proof of how nice and original this car was before restoration! This car is a treat for the eyeballs of any professional restorer or collector who knows what, 'is really involved', in replacing floors, sheet metal, rockers on a Targa (lol!),etc. If you cannot find a means to the end with your start, you many times end up with nothing to weld that new panel to, or lines and dimensions that must be kept that turn a wonderful project into a 'Freddy' movie. All doors on this car swing wonderfully! No sag! The driver and passenger door's shut with a light swing and a click. The hood needs new hydraulics (as 911's), but the latch and swing are excellent. The decklid is perfect. I SEE and have looked for, NO ACCIDENT DAMAGE!! This car, as 90% of 911 restorations, does require repair of the front suspension pan. Look closely at the photos, It has never been hit, tank surround is flawless. A look inside the rust hole that I pried open (underneath near the pickup point) shows original factory dip primer inside! This is one of the least rusted out pans that, that unfortunately, definitely needs replacement. Follow the tour of photos, She is being shown with her pants down! Get it??; Carpet pulled back, heck, pedal boards pulled back!! 99% of what looks like it may be rust on the floors in the photos is carpet glue. They are absolutely solid! This being an unrestored car, only has had one outside shoot ever (Leaving the door jams, and trunk original paint!!). Having searched the car over very well, the undercarriage is all original body shultz (undercoating). Where it has been chipped or scratched exposes original primer and if a scratch is in the primer, it is surface only. I have taken up close of what I am talking about, look in a second, wait, I have more to explain! Currently non-running; (because of the suspension crossover needing replacement), Goes like this; suspension support up front needs replaced, then you can install the fuel tank, then you can run the engine. I have prepared the car in many ways beyond this pan so the rest will be easy steps; The oil tank has been hot tanked and resprayed in 70% gloss black eurothane with an etching primer underneath. The tank, bare, looked great. It is clean inside and sealed off with tape. You can see in the photos of it loose, It HAS BEEN INSTALLED & with a new filter, ready to go! I can not find the tank to engine return hose that came off of this car when I got it. The feed hose will have to be modified or the cooler replaced with the threaded-feed cooler. Again, I can not find the original cooler. It is another thing that has slowed my roll in getting her up and running. The original MFI electric fuel pump looks to be the factory original. The lines to and from the pump are also definitely the original with the factory crimped ends! (This is one of the things that shows how well taken care of and little use this car has had). The original tank has been boiled out. It is within warrantee with the company that did it for me. I put the tank in a sealer that was tinted to the factory gray. This tank is ready for service and looks great! I have not final installed the tank because the front suspension pan needs replaced first. This is where I have gotten with this car. I haven't had the time to weld in pans, I don't want to rush and make any errors, I believe that a senior 911 owner would be more than willing to do or oversee the install himself rather than trust that it was done correctly, & thus, seeing the value in that. ********My thinking is this, anyone shopping 911E's is an experienced 911 owner. We are in the same league. When I say look at the photos, it needs this and that, BUT look at how awesome this car is, you understand. While the freshman just bought an E with a rusty smugglers box because he bought a shadow that looked great in the other guy's photo, or that same freshman isn't bidding, why?, my car is rusty because look at that suspension pan (That I pulled apart to show you!!), you my graduate, have bought what we both know is what YOU want to buy. Enough of that, the freshman is confused :)********* The engine is something special, so hang on!It is a 1972 2.4T engine. The car had a 2.2T carbureted engine when I bought it. The engine that came with was locked up because of rust in a cylinder (don't let your intake gaskets leak!). I still have it as a kit form, completely disassembled, nice condition throughout other than needing a single head & cylinder, available for the winning bidder, would he/she be interested in buying it.This INSTALLED 2.4 is a Mechanically fuel injected engine, just like original to this car, although a 2.4, not 2.2 (freshman). This particular 2.4 I bought from a friend who was in the circle with H&R Racing in N.Y. The story that I got from him as I remember it, H&R built and maintained Porsche's factory race cars in the 70's, 80's, etc. My friend is one of few on the team of developing the SUN engine analyzer. He worked with H&R on the diagnoses of their machines, combustion theories, etc, and was close with them. He had the idea of developing a supercharger kit to market specifically Mechanically fuel injected (MFI) Porsches, a rare breed, which is what made the 911E and 911S unique for this year! H&R worked up a 'space cam', & other bits (like a map sensor) to remap the mfi pump and he worked on developing a kit. This kit included this Paxton supercharger. Type in Cobra Paxton and you will see the same Paxton came on the first of the Cobras (& they are not cheap, look at the price of reproductions!)! So here is what he did.. Had H&R remap the Mechanical fuel injection pump, He designed and built the brackets to mount the blower to the 911 engine, made an air filter, custom, out of an earlier cleaner that was steel, not plastic, replaced the plastic stacks with magnesium stacks from an early 'S', as well as other things. I have not run this setup but he said that it blew the doors off of his 3.2 motor that he had installed in his RSR! He reports that the power from this engine simply scared his wife and that it was too much for the road for him (he's not 18 forever like us)! This is one of two kits that he ever completely developed. He said a friend had the other and doesn't know what ended up with it. So, needless to say, here it is, I bought it for this car, the one concoction known to exist. I would love to keep it and dyno it at my new shop in S.F, so I am very interested in keeping it. If the winning bidder does not want the engine as a whole, supercharger and mfi as a kit (I have another 2.4 car that I'd like to run it on), or would like a complete 2.7 'runner' engine that I have, I am flexible and willing to work that out with the buyer. Please contact me as we near the end of the auction and we can work out an idea if it is something that will work for both of us. This keeps the options open for the guys with fragile wives (or women w/ husbands), and for those of you who are looking for the perfect car to put that 3.0 in that you built as a youth and have had on the shelf. I was told at purchase of the car that the transmission was recently rebuilt, and it looks it. The shift shaft coming out of the front is nice and tight(a great tight) like it has not had much use to wear the nose cone bushings that it rides in. The clutch fork looks fat, the clutch very new. Within, we are rocking the Porsche aluminum pressure plate upgrade! Oh, the way she'll sound! The area above the transmission cleans up very well, as do the rear trailing arms, etc. There will be absolutely no replacement of any of the metal on this car other than the suspension pan. Interior; The dash is the typical desert dash. Faded gauges, cracked top, etc. I had the radio out to have a look-see, and Nope, no one has ever cut the dash for a radio!!The glove box is original, clean. The ashtray, same. Steering is very precise. The steering box is perfect. The tie rods look newer but with cracked boots that need replaced(my life as a wrench in the desert). The floors can be seen in the photos without the carpet installed. I also have shots of the floor and pedal box areas. They are absolutely dry. The pedals do show some water sat at some point but the bushings in the assembly are perfect, they move and swing perfectly, no worries there. The carpet has been re-dyed. It was originally a medium gray. I spray dyed them as I was preparing the car for myself with the intent of buying carpet later. The rear seats are both very nice. You can see the photo of the one swung up, they both are same nice condition. The rear package shelf is not shown in the car. I removed it to show the surrounding metal. It is very clean around the rear window seal and Targa bar support. The shelf however, did not make it back in one piece. It had shrunk from being a desert piece and I popped a nice hole through the vinyl trying to muscle it back in place. New from Stoddard are $330, wrapped in vinyl. Material around the windshield, Targa bar vinyl, etc are in nice driver conditions. The door tops are nicer than most, the arm rests are typical, lightly warped. The door panels are the original and are great. The pockets were missing when I bought the car. These are typically either missing or destroyed. I have the feeling they gave way when Mr. Pioneer installed the newest deck! At least he chose Blaupunkt speakers:) I left the deck unwired and pulled the speaker wires when I pulled the one out of the drivers door. I did this because that window has a spot in it as you roll it down that I thought may be it hitting the speaker. It is not. I will blame it on needing pulled apart and greased. This regulator is not skipping. It just hasn't been in use for a long time. A little tin can man action and you should be on your way to happiness when you roll down that sweet window! All glass is original, even the windshield! Trunk; The battery boxes are in excellent condition. You can see the edges of the metal clearly where the factory cut them all. There are no deteriorated back edges. They are very clean and would take a shultz coating and topcoat well. There was a bit of surface rust that I caught early on and preserved with an acid wash and a 'to black' coating. The fuel tank surround area can be seen, is so clean under the tank that it is unbelievable. The original shultz is in great shape, even on the edges. The suspension support, however, does need very specific spot replacement. There is no 'rot' anywhere else on this car such as you will find here. The battery vents originally dumped in this area and as far as searching old 911's, 9 out of 10 need replaced. This is just a standard. Of the 90% that have had it, I'm not sure I would trust the quality of repair of half, Of the 10% that don't need it, they soon will, it seems. Wiring looks very clean. It doesn't look like the cover had ever been off of the fuse block. No extra wires anywhere that I have seen. This car has been converted into a single battery car by someone simply adding a strap and eliminating the through cable, easily replaced, no damage done by this to bring it back to an unmolested, stock, 2 battery system. The trunk has all original shultz, primer and paint. I would not repaint this when restoring the car. I would simply do the suspension cross over pan and blend it in with shultz and top coat. The trunk vin stamping is clear and untouched. The front valance i.d. plate is the nicest that I have ever seen! Original paint still on the latch support! As stated before, the tank has been boiled and has been sprayed with factory color sealer. The front blower system and cables all appear to be in excellent shape. Gauges all appear to be factory original to the car.The trunk Fuchs wheel is in great condition. The anodization is original and I taped it off and resprayed in the same eurothane 70% black that I did the oil tank and tank support. Engine compartment; I just replaced the engine sound deadening with a Porsche replacement. The original fuel hose, (rubber hose), is cracked right where it mounts to the fuel filter. Fuel hoses should be replaced at this point even though they look to be factory original in good condition otherwise. The electronics, cdi, regulator, wiring, etc. looks to be in excellent shape on the engine wiring board. There were some melted wires on the fire wall that I wrapped with electrical tape as I did the sound deadening. There was no insulation melted through, just the outside wrap. I also sprayed the interior of the engine compartment with a 50% top coat just to touch up before installing the sound deadening. The engine compartment is very clean. The engine and transmission are mounted but no hoses or cables have been hooked up.The constant velocity joints have not yet been assembled but the axles, again, have been sprayed with 70% eurothane paint. The 4 joints have been hot bathed and cleaned. They are ready for assembly with new boots. I stopped here as I ordered boots from Pelican and accidentally got shipped the 65-68 small boots (things that have held this project up). The rear Koni's are another way of noting the care and dating the use of this car. They are very early date stamped 1973. Suspension arms, stainless braided brake hoses, etc. look to be in amazing shape. The e-brake works great. The master cylinder looks brand new.All of the lenses on the car look to be in amazing shape. The H4 lenses have no noted pitting, etc. The turn lenses look great. The only lens on the car that looks to be anything but fantastic are the rear reflectors are faded on the tops. Seals; The door to body seals were cracked and I pulled them. The trunk seals look very nice, as do the decklid seals. The car is missing the headlight to body seals, and the transmission nosecone to body(easily replaced). The windshield and rear window seals need replaced as they have shrunk and cracked. Paint; Wabi Sabi. The paint is imperfect in many ways. It appears to be a high quality, older paint job, that shows clear coat has gone away across the top of all fenders. It is really a beautiful look, patina! The base of the paint shows a very straight car. If you want a perfectly painted car, this one would do with very little, if no, body work. There are few dings, no damage. Respray would need to be outside only for most's taste. As described earlier, paint in the door jams, trunk, etc is original and in wonderful shape for the vintage. Tires and wheels; The tires are performance Toyo A20's and have solid, usable tread. The fronts have about half life left and the rear are a little between that and to the wear bars. The 6x15 fuchs are original Porsche that have been restored by infamous Al Reed. If you are looking for a project 911 E, you will not find a nicer example to work with! There are many shiny cars out there that have been built off of less than desirable cars to begin with. Here is a true project that will have huge rewards! I have tried my best to explain this car as I would want it explained to me as a buyer. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.PLEASE DO NOT CALL TO OFFER ME CASH, unless that is, you just have WAY too much. Please call me at 650-863-seven969This is a live auction with NO RESERVE!!
