Vehicle Detail

1973 Mazda RX-2 Sedan Here we go again... Description: This 1973 Mazda RX-2 has been in my family since new. My parents drove this car for a number of years, yet only amassed around 60k miles. The first engine in this car wore out, like they did in so many of these cars, back in the late '70s with about 40k miles. It was replaced with a used engine, which lasted until the early '90s...my mother didn't do a whole lot of driving. She had the engine overhauled around '91 or so. She passed away in '92, so didn't drive much after the engine was rebuilt. I inherited the car, drove it a few hundred miles, then parked it. When everything is working right on these cars, they are a lot of fun. Maybe not the quickest cars in today's world (0-60 around 10 or 11 seconds), but for what they sold for in '73, they were pretty fast. More than once I punished friends of mine who "thought" they were fast! And they are a lot of fun under overpasses or in tunnels...mash the pedal to the floor and quickly release... BANG! With good tires and shocks, handling is quite competent, and I found the car to be very comfortable on long drives, especially with the AC cranked up. Gas mileage? Surely you jest...about 18 on the highway, around 12 around town. Condition: The bad stuff first... This car will need a LOT of work to return it to its former glory. It has sat for years in the desert sun...a little (OK, a whole LOT) of faded paint, down to the primer (my brother painted the car and took out a couple little dings as a project for a body shop class he took about 1990 or so). The interior is deteriorated (then again, that's pretty normal for Japanese cars of the early '70s). The engine is not running, but it turns freely and has compression (I have moved it around the yard a few times in the last 15 years on the starter...it wants to start, but...). I believe the fuel pump is not working, and I am sure the carburetor will need to be rebuilt (don't drop any nuts or washers down the manifold! I did that once...not on this car...wasn't pretty...), and the emissions stuff will have to be checked...I parked the car after a smog check determined the car to be a "gross polluter". It's smog exempt now (and has disappeared off California DMV's computer), so that won't be a problem, but if the car gets used, I'd fix the emission problem. This is a California car, so there is virtually NO rust underneath, and only visible rust is a little surface rust on the body. The only serious rust is a spot on the floor of the trunk, where rain water came in past the dried-up weatherstrip on the trunk, seeped into the padding under the trunk floor mat, and stayed for a while. Not rusted through, should clean up, or someone could weld in a piece of metal into the floor. Also, a little rust around the windshield and rear window trim. Now, the good stuff... Like I said, the car is a California car, and is rust-free except for the above-mentioned spots. This car has never been in an accident, so it is straight. One small dent by the fuel filler door, and there is a little spot on the left front fender that was been folded up when the left-front tire blew on the freeway one night in 1981 (I actually remember that night...I was getting a ride to the Honda dealer to pick up my new '81 Gold Wing). This car is complete...it includes all the little emblems (the "RX-2 rear fender emblems and the little winged thingies that go on the roof behind the rear doors). The grille is in good shape, and includes the badge. It even has the original headlight bulbs (Hey...if you restore it, that might be worth a point or two to a judge...). It has all four original hubcaps, and comes with original keys. Even has a little tank under the hood and a push button on the dashboard for "sub-zero starting fluid" (90% antifreeze and 10% water). Terms and conditions and stuff...please read You place a bid, you are entering into a contract to purchase the car should your bid be the winning bid. Upon the end of the auction, the winning bidder will pay via PayPal within 4 days unless they have made a prior arrangement with me, e.g. the winning bidder lives close by and is picking up the car themselves, in which case they may pay cash at the time of pick-up if so desired. make all arrangements for transport of the car (it is not driveable at this time). If you reside outside the continental US, please email me before bidding with your plan to transport the car, and in what timeframe. If, after placing the winning bid, you email me and tell me that "your PayPal account has been hacked and you want my bank account information to transfer funds", your purchase will be immediately cancelled, eBay contacted, and the car will be offered "second chance". Disclaimer... All descriptions of this car are accurate to the best of my knowledge. However, the car has been sitting undriven for many years, and may have issues of which I am unaware. Caveat emptor. Thank you very much, and good luck to you!
