Vehicle Detail
2016 Jeep Wrangler JK Rubicon Hard Rock - Highly Modified - 37 inch Tires This is a heavily modified Wrangler JK Rubicon Hard Rock with a focus on excellent off-road and on-road performance. We didn’t just build this Jeep with a list of parts, we instead tested, adjusted and changed many parts until it rode and handled perfectly. My OCD cost me more than $20,000 on top of the purchase price of the Jeep, but it was a fun project. Those hundreds of hours spent researching and building are now on offer to you. Basics This is a Rubicon Hard Rock model in Billet Silver with about 22,500 miles. The Hard Rock upgrade includes many features, such as leather seats, upgraded stereo with subwoofer, all-weather mats, heated seats and mirrors, window tint and much more. In addition, this Jeep was custom-ordered with the following options: * Side airbags on front seats * 3-piece matte black hardtop * Hardtop headliner (reduced noise, increased insulation) * Trailer hitch tow group (replaced factory hitch with rear bumper hitch) See photos for window sticker, which includes all options. Suspension & Steering We wanted the Jeep to drive very well on the road because most trips in Colorado involve a lot of highway miles first. The key to this was maintaining as much of the factory suspension geometry as possible, while replacing most items with higher quality heavy-duty versions. For example, most aftermarket wheels affect the scrub radius of the front driveline, which negatively impacts handling, ride and reliability. We not only managed to fit 37” tires without any rubbing, but we did it while staying as close to the factory geometry as possible. The opposite applies to the caster angle on the front wheels. If you maintain the factory geometry, the handling at high-speeds becomes frightening. We adjusted the control arms, added drop brackets to the lower control arms, and re-tested the alignment until we got it just right. We also added a Tom Woods driveshaft to handle the higher degree of caster. This Jeep can now cruise at 90mph solid as a rock. We spent a similar amount of time on the front steering hardware, such as the draglink, tie rod, steering gearbox, steering knuckles, ball joints and more. We only used the best parts available. Too many people drill out the knuckle to top-mount the draglink, which unless done perfectly, introduces play to the mount and can lead to steering problems. We took a much more costly and time-consuming route. We replaced the factory knuckles with high-steer knuckles and replaced the ball joints with the best available items from Rare Parts. We also added Steer Smarts Griffin attenuator to their heavy-duty draglink. Here is what we replaced for the suspension and steering: * Tom Woods 1310 front driveshaft * Synergy 8058-30 3" Rear Bump Stop Spacers * Synergy 8063-20 3" Front Coil Springs * Synergy 8064-20 3" Rear Coil Springs * Synergy 8057-30 3" Front Bump Stop Spacers * Synergy 8059 Front Sway Bar Links * Synergy 8060 Rear Sway Bar Links * Synergy 8066 Front/Rear Brake Line Kit * Synergy 8056 Rear Track Bar Bracket * Synergy 8055 Front Track Bar Bracket * Synergy 8001 Drag Link * Synergy 2228012 Flip Adapter * Synergy 8046 Fixed Rear Lower Control Arms * Synergy 8047 Fixed Front Lower Control Arms * Synergy 8053 Adj Front Upper Control Arms * Synergy 8054 Adj Rear Upper Control Arms * Synergy 8074 Rear Lower Shock Mounts * Synergy 8073 Front Lower Shock Mounts * Synergy 8097 Rear Coil Wedges * Fox 2.0 Performance Series Reservoir - FOX-985-24-015 * Fox 2.0 Performance Series Reservoir - FOX-985-24-016 * Fox 2.0 Performance Series Stabilizer ATS * Steering Smarts Yeti Extreme tie rod * Steering Smarts Yeti XD top-mount draglink with Griffin XD Attenuator * Rancho RS62100 High-Steering Knuckle * Rare Parts RP12573 Ball Joint Kit - Adjustable * Installation for lift, driveshaft, etc * Installation for knuckles, ball joints and alignment Wheels & Tires We chose the BFG KO2 37” tire because it is great for Colorado where we can get rock, dirt and snow all in one day. The KO2s are siped, mud and snow rated, virtually bulletproof and wear slowly. We also considered the Cooper STT Pros and Nitto Trail Grapplers, but the KO2s are by far the best on the highway and still almost as good on the type of off-road terrain we encounter in Colorado. The AEV Salta wheels have an offset that is much closer to factory than most aftermarket wheels. The concern here is rubbing the frame, but of course we went with Synergy’s lower control arms, which are designed to provide additional tire clearance. The result is excellent suspension geometry, excellent ride and handling, and absolutely no rubbing. Very few Jeeps achieve this while maintaining near-to-factory steering geometry. Here is what we replaced for the wheels and tires: * 5x AEV Salta matte black wheels * 37" BFG K02 tires * Black wheels studs * Teraflex Tire carrier * Installation and shipping for tire carrier, etc Exterior & Lighting To fit the tires, we needed extra clearance in the fenders, so the factory fenders had to go. We conducted a lot of research and finally decided on Crawler Conceptz. The founder of CC was previously a key member of the Poison Spyder team, so he really knows his Jeeps. We had everything black powder coated with a UV-safe coating. The Crawler Conceptz front bumper is a work of art. It has a recessed housing for the winch, a nice small bumper bar, tabs and great clearance for the front wheels. We added a Warn Zeon 10S winch with Spydura rope. It’s a little overkill for a 2-door, but keep in mind winch ratings don’t apply uniformly to the entire coil of rope. So we wanted to make sure this winch was strong enough for all situations. The rear bumper includes a tow hitch, which is higher up than the factory hitch. We have skinny front fenders to match the bumper and regular rears. These items are very tough; they can hold the weight of a Jeep on its side and you can easily stand on them without any worry. We also trimmed the rock rails for extra tire clearance in the rear. The trimming is very neat and the factory caps fit back on perfectly. As for the lights, the headlights, taillights and fog lights were all replaced with JW Speaker LED lights. They are much much better than the factory lights and better than anything I have seen on any factory car. We did not plan on too much night off-roading, so we did not add light bars or auxiliary lighting. We have taken the Jeep camping and at night the current lights are more than enough for driving off-road. Here is what we replaced for the exterior and lighting: * Crawler Conceptz Ultra Mid Width Front Bumper w/ Recessed Winch Mount With Bar/Tabs * Crawler Conceptz Ultra Series JK Rear Bumper with Tabs * Crawler Conceptz Ultra Series Skinny Front Fender * Crawler Conceptz Ultra Series Rear Flare * Crawler Conceptz Ultra Series Turn Signals * Powercoating all Crawler Conceptz parts * Warn Zeon 10-S Winch w/100' Spydura Synth Rope * JW Speaker 8700 Evolution J LED headlights * JW Speaker front fog lights * JW Speaker rear lights * Installation for Crawler Conceptz and Warn parts * Installation for lighting Radio With the CB radio, we again conducted a lot of research and tested and changed our install until everything was right. The antenna is front mounted for optimal reception and we used a unique Midland radio that can both be used as a portable handheld (comes with a battery pack) and as an in-car system wired to the antenna. It is more flexible than any system on the market. Here is what we installed for the radio: * Midland 75-822 40 Channel CB-Way Radio w/ Battery Pack * Firestik FS CB Antenna * Jeep JK CB Antenna Fender Mount * AntennaX Black Billet (7-inch) Antenna for (07 thru 17) Recovery No good Jeep setup is complete without great recovery gear. In addition to the Warn winch mentioned above, we have a genuine Jeep carry bag filled with essential recovery gear. Here is what the recovery gear includes: * Genuine Jeep recovery gear bag * Gloves * Warn tow rope * D shackles * Snatch block * Tree saver Condition This Jeep is in excellent condition. The only noticeable blemishes are on the wheels and windscreen. The wheels have a number of scuffs and the windscreen has a very small chip, which could be easily fixed. The interior and exterior are in otherwise excellent condition. This Jeep has never been rocked crawled, only driven off-road for camping and other activities. Although we built this Jeep to be awesome off-road, we never really intended to take it on 4x4 trips. Rather, we built it to explore Colorado for hiking, camping, biking, kayaking, etc. Summary The total cost of this Jeep was well over $60,000, not including time for researching, testing, adjusting and changing items. It’s difficult to value that additional time, but the Jeep is a lot better as a result. Much of the difficult work was professionally completed at All Seasons 4x4 in Colorado with the help of steering, alignment and tire specialists. We are sad to see the Jeep go, but we need to sell it to help buy a home. Nonetheless, much of the fun of this project was in the research and building and our loss is your gain. This is truly a special Jeep. Please contact me for an inspection. Note: I re-listed this auction on July 18 because the location was incorrect (the jeep is in Boulder, CO not California) and I couldn't upload more pictures due to Ebay errors/bugs.
