PRICE JUST LOWERED $1,000 for fast sale...GREAT INVESTMENT- ULTRA RARE- TOTALLY UNIQUE Up for sale is my 1966 Toyota Stout 1900 half ton pickup truck. These trucks were quite rare in the states but popular workhorse trucks in places like Thailand and South Africa. First introduced in Japan as the "Toyopet RK" in 1954, Toyota renamed it the Stout in 1959 and in 1960 introduced a re-styled second generation truck. Stout's weren't sold in the U.S. until 1964, and even then only four were sold in that first year. By 1969 Toyota replaced the Stout with the popular Hilux. The Vin# on this Stout shows this is #8 off the production line in 1966. Before buying this truck I needed to do a bit of research since, like most people, I had never seen one in person before. I discovered that, of the very few Stout's that have ever come up for sale, they tend to be either expensive full restorations or rusted out project trucks. This one is in that rare sweet spot...an affordable combination of partially restored, mechanically sorted with a few upgrades and great patina. These are sturdy, durable trucks with a empty weight of over 3,100 lbs and were rated as half ton trucks. Originally equipped with a stock 1.9 litre 4-cylinder 3R engine and 4-speed column shift transmission, a previous owner upgraded both with a rebuilt Toyota 18R-c 2 litre engine with a matching 4 speed transmission (with floor shifter) sourced from a 1972 Toyota Hilux. My go-to mechanic for my vintage cars checked this truck out when I bought it and said the conversion was professionally done. This Stout runs great and has so much more power than the original stock engine. It starts up and runs/shifts as it should and drives straight down the road. As best I've been able to determine, this truck first spent some time in California... and then Arizona, before coming east a few years ago. It is dry and solid...the only blemishes are surface rust spots and paint scrapes as can be seen in the photos. I recently had the cab interior restored but elected to leave the body exterior alone since it has a wonderful patina that you couldn't replicate if you tried. I believe the original color was a robbins egg blue. Many years ago it was painted the tan color it is today. There are areas, especially on the hood near the cowl, where some of the paint has peeled off...but, as mentioned earlier- if you appreciate the vintage patina look that seems to be popular right now, you'll want to leave it as-is as I have. The bed had some light surface rust and the usual dings. I lightly sanded it and then rattle-can painted it black for some contrast. The interior is all newly restored by a well known upholstery shop here in town... new black carpet over insulating padding (the floor pans were unblemished, very clean revealing the nice tan paint before the sun did its work), new seats, new matching door panels, new shifter boot and a new black headliner. The metal dash is in excellent shape with the original steering wheel being especially nice. New lap seat belts were installed this winter. All the gauges work but the speedometer stopped working last month. It's the metal ribbon style speedo with an orange bar that moves left to right across the instrument guage. It was very loud and rattling when I got the truck and then suddenly one day it got quiet and stopped working... There's also a newer small am/fm radio under the dash. The ride is excellent for an old vintage truck and the tires (215-75-14) look like they have at least 90% tread remaining. The dog dish style Stout hubcaps are original and quite rare. Brakes (drums all around) are excellent with new shoes last year. The emergency brake was removed when the new engine and transmission was installed. The original e-brake handle is still under the dash but the mechanism for the Stout e-brakeconfiguration at the engine side of the firewall did not fit with the new 18R engine configuration. There are alternate e-brake options but I've just left the car in gear when parked, or used a block on hills. In the past year, the following work was completed: new front clear directional/turn signal lensesreplaced and rebalanced center drive shaft bearingnew fuel pumpnew batterynew carburetornew spark plugs, points and wiresnew water pumpnew belts and hosesnew tiresnew brake shoesrebuilt master and slave wheel cylinders The first time I took this truck to our local Cars & Coffee it was the hit of the day- no one there had ever seen a Stout in person, much less ever heard of one. If you are looking for something mechanically sound and completely unique... this is your truck. I would also venture to say, with the recent popularity of vintage Japanese cars/trucks in the collector community, that the Stout will be an excellent investment for years to come. While I have confidence you could drive this cross-country tomorrow- it's that reliable... it's still a 50 year old truck, so shipping or trailering is highly recommended.
