Vehicle Detail

I have a small collection of European classic cars and last year obtained this very nice 1972 BMW 2002 as part of a trade deal for another car from my collection. I've enjoyed driving it around town and taking it to our local Cars & Coffee. Now it's time for another new owner to enjoy. I do not have much of a recent history on the car except that for the past 15 years it was titled in South Carolina and then Virginia. I acquired the car from the Virginia owner who owned the car for 7 years. It now has a clear Virginia title in my name. I do however have some very interesting history on the car dating back to the late 1970's to mid 1980's when this particular 2002 was well known in the Boston area to BMW enthusiasts. It was owned by Al Cath, the owner of Beaconwood Motors BMW and Beaconwood Audio- a BMW service center and high end car audio specialist in Boston. One of the photos below shows the original 1975 Massachussets title for the car and some reprints from the BMW enthusiast magazine "Roundel" (June 1985 issue) and "Installation News" a car audio trade magazine (March 1986). Beaconwood did a full restoration on the car when it had about 48,000 miles on the clock. It was brought back to show quality condition and an $8,500 audio system was installed. For many years afterward this car primarily sat on the Beaconwood Audio showroom floor and was featured at trade shows as a "mobile listening room" to showcase for customers the ultimate in "state of the art" car audio. Some vestiges of that audio system are still in the car (multiple speakers custom built into both doors and rear deck lid). There are two high end pre-amps still in the trunk and can be seen in the photos. Today the car has a modern Alpine am/fm/cd stereo in the dash. It appears from the 1975 Massachusetts title that the car was eventually transferred in 2000 (with 106,000 miles). The previous owner estimated that the car now has about 123,000 miles and that's what I put on my title application, though the working odometer says 116k. Here's info on the car as it was represented by Beaconwood BMW after the restoration when it had 54,000 miles: Rebuilt 4-speed transmission with new bearings and synchrosAlpina limited slip differential, 75% locking effect, 3:90:1Bilstein suspension modified by Beaconwood BMWAlpina quick ratio steeringBMW momo steering wheelAlpina wood shift knobVintage replacement chrome bumpers (from a 1973 2002) I was told by the owner from whom I acquired the car that a newly rebuilt 138 hp tii engine was swapped in for the base engine at around 85,000 miles (so numbers obviously do not match) and the engine in this car now has about 40k miles on it since it was rebuilt. Engine has a chrome plated BMW cylinder head and stainless fuel lines. The original interior was swapped out for a like new tan cloth interior from a similar vintage Alpina along with new carpet and BMW mats. These seats have high bolsters and are much more comfortable than stock. The car now rides on a nice set of Hankook tires on early 1980's 325e vintage BMW bottle cap wheels. Full spare with the original 1972 wheel and jack. The years have resulted in typical wear on the repaint from 1985 (Agave green) but as you can see from the photo's it still looks like near show quality from 15 feet. There is minor surface rust along the edge of the trunk lid and the roof near the sunroof edge. Both areas have been treated with POR15 and painted. There were small areas of rust (about the size of a half dollar) in the usual areas near the front lower fenders/door...both have been cosmetically repaired with bondo and painted. I wanted a nice driver- not a show car. The next owner may decide, like I did, to leave it as-is... or take care of these rust issues and repaint. I wanted a nice driver not a show car. The shock towers, spare tire well and trunk tub are clean and rust-free. It's also very clean underneath and I have no oil drips on my garage floor. All windows are clear and crank up and down as they should. The sunroof opens and closes effortlessly. The headliner is good, with some minor discoloration and stains. This 2002 rides like it's on rails. The 4-speed transmission shifts easily with no noises and the engine idles and revs as it should. No disappointments. There is one crack on the dash in the usual place near the bump for the speedo and tach, and the lower passenger corner of the windshield has a small (1 inch) area that is delaminated/glazed. In short, for the purist looking for a pristine all-original 2002 show-car, this isn't what you want. If you're looking for a nicely restored car with tasteful mods and a great, sorted driver- you'll be hard pressed to find a better example. Priced to sell. Originally listed earlier this winter for $16,950 but spring is coming and I will be needing the garage space soon for a new acquisition in my collection. I've researched BMW 2002 prices of this vintage and condition for several months and believe you will not find another that is a better value for the money. Serious buyers only please. If you have feedback of less than "10" on Ebay, email me before you make an offer or hit the "buy it now". If you have negative feedback- email me first or I will ignore your offer. The car is garaged at my home, a few miles from the airport in Charlottesville, Va., about 2 hours southwest from Washington D.C. Fly in and drive home if you'd like, or I will be happy to help load for your shipper. **IMPORTANT: please note that I will be traveling and out of the country from 3/17-3/27. I will not be able to show the car or answer any questions by phone during that time but I will have regular access to email and can answer any questions by email within 24 hours.
