Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is my 2004 Freightliner/Dodge Sprinter. This van is in need of an engine rebuild or replacement. I simply cannot afford to do the repair myself and am therefore offering my van at a bargain price for someone to fix or replace the engine and enjoy many more years of adventures! I love my sprinter, and have spent probably over 200 hours on the build out and fabrication of the living space. Keep in mind that this is not a professional build out, but it is beautiful and cozy. I have experience in building but there are small errors and imperfections throughout. The overall impression however is that it is a pleasant and inviting space that has received many compliments from curious strangers and visitors. Here's some of the details:-New Radiator and hoses-New Alternator-New Battery-New belt and pulleys-New top end of Motor (Head, head gasket, glow plugs, etc.)-New Harmonic balancer-Former service vehicle for MedStar with all maintenance and oil changes performed on timeCamper conversion Features-Three range propane stove with 20 lb tank- Fold out couch to double bed200 watt solar panel and controllerDeep cycle accessory battery3000 watt power inverter12v and 110v fridge12v water with 20 gallon tank110v track lighting with LED lighting22 inch I-mac with wireless keyboard/mouse110v brand new Air Conditioner110v electrical outlets throughout with fuse box and outside plugaftermarket stereo and speakerscustom roof rack and access laddercustom shelving and cabinets throughoutair vent above cooking spacePartition wall between living and storage space with removable plexiglass windowsStorage space walls covered in pegboard for easy organizationCrawl space access door (doggie door) cut between cab and camper-surfboard hanging hardware mounted to ceiling of camperWalls and roof insulated with organic wool fiber (stays toasty in winter, cool in summer!)The engine has a bad number four piston. The engine starts and the van drives but the tapping noise is plain to hear upon starting. I had two shops look at it and one pulled the injector and it tested good so the piston is definitely at fault. Here are the quotes I received for the repair so that you know your options.Pull engine and rebuild bottom end. New pistons, connecting rods, piston rings, valve job and head gasket+bolts -$7000. (this estimate came from a commercial diesel mechanic who is very good but has high labor hours. This is largely all labor cost and with another mechanic I feel you could get the rebuild done for around $5000)Replace with a rebuilt engine from an online source. I found rebuilt engines with a warranty for $4600. With the install about $6000-Replace with a new engine. This is a complete motor with new everything and a two year 24k mile warranty. $10,000 All this work could be performed by one of the two shops here in Vegas and be ready in a week to 10 days. Mechanically there is absolutely nothing else wrong with this vehicle. I have driven it 30k miles this year alone for work and travel, and have felt very comfortable about its driving condition. The only trouble we have had has been with the motor. The head and radiator were replaced back in March, and the radiator blew due to pressure build up from the cracked head. The van has done around 20k miles since then with no issues other than the harmonic balancer, which is related to the engine issue. Transport shipping is very cheap from Vegas. The windshield has a crack through the middle but it doesn't impair vision and should still pass inspection. On the inside there are some scratches on the paint and a couple of holes in the wall where I was going to install lights but didn't. Some of the cuts that I made were not perfect and not all the wall panels line up perfectly. Like I said it is not a professional job but anyone with a little gumption and DIY attitude could finish this van off to make it look very very good. The pictures speak for themselves, and anyone who is interested is more than welcome to take a look!
