Vehicle Detail
I'm selling my rare 1966 Ford Galaxie 500XL after 2 years of painstaking restoration. I'm selling the Galaxie because I'm interested in purchasing a 7 Liter Galaxie with an automatic transmission for I can no longer drive a manual transmission because of a recent injury. Let's start, I purchased the car 2 years ago on eBay from a Gentleman in Florida. The car was listed as a real nice car that needed little work to make mint. Included in the gentlemans listing was pictures of the car in different stages at the body shop. It was described as a Texas car, built originally in California and the car had no rust to speak of when it was shipped to bare metal. Very little filler was used in only a few spots. Well I won the car and had the car shipped to me in MA. When the car arrived it would not start even with a jump. We pushed it in my garage and started assessing its real condition. My mouth dropped when I took the car out of the garage a had a good look at it. Needless to say the Galaxie was a mess. I decided to start from scratch. I started with a new battery, starter, solenoid, and battery cables. Finally got the Galaxie started and the engine had a lifter noise, took the top end apart and found 2 bent pushrods,I decided to change all the pushrods while I had it apart. Compression reading were taken on all cylinders and were within factory specs.I started the car and the noise was gone and the idle was ok but had a little stumble, I took the carb off and had it professionally rebuilt, installed it and it ran perfect. Next I removed the interior, headliner, and dash pads. I installed Dyna Mat on the floors and sealing and replaced the headliner and dash pads. Carpet was in good shape and seats had just been recovered unfortunately drivers seat has a slight rip on the seam as the foam padding was never replaced and sags in the center. Next I checked all the suspension and replaced the lower ball joint bushings and front and rear shocks. The brakes are in great shape as are the 4 drums ( no power brakes). I then removed the bad chrome wheels that came with the car and changed them with period correct steel wheels and poverty caps( a set of Galaxie rally caps come with the car) brand new Brigestone WW tires were then installed. Next, the wiring was all gone through and corrected with all lights and factory gauges operational including all dash lights, speedo, and am radio. The dual exhaust in in good shape but has some surface rust, I cleaned them up the best I could and painted the tailpipes high heat silver. The console stainless top was all pitted so that was replaced. The shifter that was in the car was a Mr Gasket shifter that had a short handle that was hard to reach when shifting and did not like to go in reverse. I bought and installed a Hurst shifter, adapter plate, and rods that was for this model and year Galaxie. It works perfect. I detailed the engine bay by removing all the terrible aftermarket accessories and replaced them with all stock parts.I took the car out of the garage a few wheels ago and noticed some paint bubbles in the front of the left rear quarter, the front lower part of the passenger door and a little spot on the c pillar near the roof. I ground down the paint on the left quarter and found some minor rust holes so I purchased a new quarter panel to replace that section( I will include the quarter panel in the sale). The car has fiberglass bumpers that were yellow when I got the car but I had them painted black which in my opinion looks better. I was told the car had power steering but it didn't, it was difficult to steer so I installed power steering with an NOS pump, new hoses, and new rag joint. I could go on forever but I would like to remind everybody that the Galaxie is great mechanically, has its stock appearance restored and is a very hard car to find in a 4 speed. Parts that I have that do not come with the car but can be purchased separately are as follows: Front and rear rechromed bumpers4 15'' Ford Galaxie spoke with spinner hubcapsComplete new mandrel bent exhaust systemRebuilt factory stock shifter assemble with reverse lockout New electronic ignition kit with new coilRefinished rocker moldings Refinished trunk moldings Other repairs I forgot to mention is the gas tank was removed, cleaned, tested and replaced as was the radiator. Door data plate reads: 63C (body), 8 (color), 86 (trim), 01B (date), 75 (dso), 4 (axle), 5 (trans). This tag shows the car is an XL fastback, springtime yellow, crinkle black bucket seats, built in Feb of 1966, field office in Phoenix AZ, and 4 speed with console. Thank you for looking, if you have any questions please contact me through eBay . Buyer will be responsible for shipping. I also reserve the right to end the sale as the car is listed locally.
