Vehicle Detail
1975 Ford F-100 Custom 4x4 From the estate of a meticulous motorcycle collector, this 1975 Ford Custom F-100 4x4 was mechanically and cosmetically restored about five years ago, and has seen few miles since. Starting point was a sound 80,000-mile truck that was mechanically freshened then handed over to an expert body man. After the largely rust-free body was prepped and treated to a coat of deep maroon paint, all the brightwork – fenders to hubcaps, side trim to mirrors – was replaced with NOS, refinished or high-quality reproduction pieces. Inside the clean & tidy engine bay is a 351 V-8 hooked up to a 4-speed manual transmission with super-low granny first gear. Bare galvanized inner fender wells bracket the engine. Power brakes & power steering are useful options. Though the dash’s temperature gauge is one of the few things on this truck that doesn’t work as it should, the engine runs cool and has no overheating problems. Clutch take-up is smooth. The chassis is amazingly rust-free, with just a few spots visible in the passenger footwell. No patches or previous repairs are evident (see photo 24). The suspension was fitted with new Monroe Magnum shocks all-round, while chunky BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A tires fill up the wheel openings. The interior was kept largely stock with new rubber flooring and a reupholstered & recovered bench seat in black vinyl. A nice period touch is the Realistic CB radio, while a modern retro-looking AM/FM radio with CD hookup resides in the stock location and plays through a pair of auxiliary speakers hung unobtrusively under the dash. Though super-clean, the interior does show some use, with minor scratches here & there, and a small rip in the shifter boot. Never intended to be a showpiece, this authentic, honest truck nonetheless has to be of the nicest examples around, with much money & effort spent on its restoration. It is currently registered, has a clear California title and is available for inspection by appointment in Aliso Viejo, California.
