Vehicle Detail
You're always welcome to do a VIN CarFAX search but I'll save you the time and give you the good, bad, and the ugly right here. You cannot drive this car away; it must be pushed/pulled/towed/transported when you pick it up. The car is sold "as-is". If you bid and win, be prepared to finish the purchase and pick it up. My ebay ID looks new (no feedback), but my regular ebay ID is "beernose", search that and you'll find I'm a 17 year veteran of this site. I've always been an honest buyer and seller. The new ebay ID has to do with listing fees, long story, I'm happy to share by message or by phone. This car was flooded during Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012. The car was totalled by Allstate insurance, sold at auction. I did a VIN search at time of purchase and found it was regularly serviced by a NYC area Volvo dealer about every 6-8 months so there was a regular record of mileage. The last service was done about 6 months prior to Hurricane Sandy, putting the mileage on the car right around 77,000 miles. Transparency and honesty are the foundation of any vehicle sale. I have nothing to hide. I'm not passing off a junk vehicle. Since I have 3 working vehicles and only 2 drivers in the household, I'm just not motivated to work on this car anymore. Is it repairable? Yes, with some replacement parts, some determination, and some familiarity with Volvos. Is it a walk in the park? No. Don't expect that for this kind of car at this price. I fully expect that anyone purchasing this car may disassemble and part it out, swap in another car's interior for any damaged modules, or use it strictly for the drivetrain (the 6-speed manual trans with AWD is not easy to find). As the pictures show, this exterior of this car is mechanically very nice. No body rust. This car has the unique Volvo "Dynamic Trim Package" which includes the lower body mouldings and rear spoiler. Windows are tinted all around (looks like 35% tint all around which is now legal in Illinois). There are a couple minor door dings, but no dents. The prior owner must've parked near some trees because there are spots of tree sap, but those come off with but & tar remover and a little patience (I removed several but didn't get to all of them). The drivetrain is T5 turbo engine (218HP), 6-speed manual transmission with All-Wheel-Drive (unique combination for this car in the U.S.). Engine and transmission look good (engine dipstick showed normal oil level, engine wasn't flooded and transmission oil level was also normal indicating the transmission wasn't flooded). During my inspection I removed the spark plugs and put a camera into the cylinders, all of them looked normal (none of cylinders were flooded). I also removed the turbocharger pipes near the intercooler and at the throttle and there was no evidence of water inside them so the engine was definitely not running when it was flooded. Tread on the tires is about 5/32". One of the rims has a sizeable curb hit; rim doesn't appear bent and its holding air fine. I bought the car from a wholesaler shortly after the hurricane hoping to take my time disassembling and drying out the interior. I did that. The entire interior (short of the upper part of the dashboard which contains the HVAC) has been completely removed, dried out, and reassembled. I was able to determine the flood water reached about waist height when sitting in the car (lower than the steering wheel, about as high as the shifter). Unfortunately, it was salt water. So while the exterior of the car is designed to be exposed to water and corrosion, the interior electronics are not, so any electrical items lower than the shifter did not fare well. This car has not run since it was flooded. It's Allstate's policy never to apply power to a flooded vehicle so it arrived to me with no power. I did NOT apply power either to prevent damage to any electrical components until it was dried out and inspected. During my inspection, I found that the CEM (Central Electronic Module; Volvo's version of a "smart" fusebox) was damaged by the floodwater. Without it, nothing gets power, and none of the internal systems will "talk" (thus, you can't even try to start the engine). The Volvo CEM part number is #31327215. Dealer list price is $648.60, you can find it online (including eBay) for anywhere from $474 to $537. However, it MUST be programmed by the dealer or a Volvo authorized service center before it will be operational. Items that I've verified or inspected:Battery power was NEVER supplied to the car after it was flooded (ie no new battery nor jumper cables)Airbags - driver and passenger dash bags are intact, they were above the flood level. Curtain airbags are OK. Airbags built into the seats are questionable, the lower part of the seat back was below water levelPower window/lock switches - OK, above the flood levelPower seat motors - under the seat and corroded, I doubt they'll ever work againPower window control modules inside door panel - No good. Below flood level. However, I believe the power window motors themselves were ABOVE the water lineRear tailgate release - Works but was cracked when getting hatch opened. Still works and usable, but the top portion was cracked.Door speakers were below water level, no good.CEM Module (fusebox) - Below flood level, no good. See paragraph above concerning this itemHID Headlights - You can see evidence that there was some flood water in them, but inspection of the insides is inconclusive, the components didn't show the same floodwater evidence. So assume the headlight assembly is OK, but the HID module inside is still questionable.Gauge cluster (DIM module) - OK, above flood levelClimate module (CCM) - I know that the bottom portion of it (some of the pushbuttons and maybe the bottom knobs) were close to the flood line. I didn't disassemble the CCM, so I can't comment on whether its 100% or not.Radio display / CD player - OK, above flood level.Taillights - OK, no evidence of flood waterWiper motors - both front and rear OK, above flood levelHeated seats - the relays are located under the seat (below flood level) and at least the bottom heating element were below flood level so assume its not likely12V power outlet (cigarette socket) - Corroded - (OEM Volvo replacement is inexpensive)Side mirrors / motors - above flood levelBrake rotors/calipers - Sitting for over a year without being driven results in heavy rust on the rotors. The brakes DO work when I was moving the car around.Parking break - fully functional, hasn't been sticking when I've used itEngine air filter - needs a new air-filter - bottom half of it was exposed to flood waterSpare tire/jack - all in-tact and goodExhaust/muffler - has surface corrosion inside the tail-pipe, but much of the muffler and pipes are stainlessEngine condition - everything else in the engine room appears fine. Hoses and belts are good. No coolant leaks, radiator is ok. Nothing is visibly destroyed or damaged. Air conditioner - without a running car, I can't judge whether the AC works. However a quick press of the schraeder valve gave a hiss so its holding some pressure and there are no visible leaks from any of the couplings.Comes with OEM floormats (rubber, custom molded)If you have a question that I haven' t answered here, contact me and I'll be happy to provide you an honest answer. The car is available to view prior to purchase if you live in the Midwest. I live in one of the suburbs of northwest Chicago. Send me a message with your phone number if you'd like to see the car. I'll say it again, you cannot drive this car away; it must be pushed/pulled/towed/transported when you pick it up. The steering is not locked and the brakes do work. Please don't message me asking if the car is safe to drive back to your home state.
