Vehicle Detail

This auction is for a 1973 VW Bus. This has been my bus for over 12 years and has provided many great memories. It is a great running bus that is a blast to take camping. The interior of the bus is in good shape, but the exterior needs some work. My plan was to work on it over the next few years, but I just don’t have the time. I have decided that I would rather someone else get this bus and clean it up and use it instead of it rusting away. My loss is someone else’s gain. The interior is a full Westy camper with almost everything that came with it in 73. All the cabinets are there, the footstool, ice box, sink, etc. The cushions have all been covered in a nice velour material by the previous owner. The door panels are covered with the same material, but the door clips need a little work, they are loose. The wood ceiling panel is in great shape. The pop top canvas is in decent shape, it was replaced about 5 years ago. The upper cot is ripped. It was replaced several years ago, but the kids got a little rough and ended up falling through it one day. There is also a baby cot, but I think it might be original and I would not trust it with my kids..... The front seat covers are old ones that would need to be replaced, but they still work fine. The dash is in decent shape, but the top of it is worn. The previous owner added some 12 volt charging outlets on the side of the ice box and also some switches that control the additional interior lights that have been added. The last time I checked, the pump sink worked fine, but I have not checked it in several years. Check the pictures for close ups of everything. Exterior is where all the work is needed. The body is not really in that bad of shape, most of the rust is just surface rust. I started to work on the surface rust and found it fairly easy to clean up, but decided that I just did not have the time to finish it. Where I have worked, I have covered the rust spots with POR 15 to stop it from rusting any more. I did this to the left rear quarter panel and covered the primer with some rattle can orange. This is why the paint looks different than the rest of the bus. There are places that it has rust all the way through. Under the windshield is rusted and would need to be replaced or reworked. The driver side rear quarter panel has a rust hole that needs to be repaired. I believe under the battery has some rust and also the area you step on when entering the passenger side of the bus. That area looks like the previous owner did some work on it with fiberglass and it has held up well over the past 12 years that I have had it. Other than those places, I think the rest is all surface rust. No guarantee since I have not stripped every rust spot. The camper pop top is in great shape and really looks good for having never been painted. I just removed the windshield wiper system and greased everything and replaced what was worn out. They now have new wiper arms and blades and work great. The horn is not working and I have not had time to check this out. This is the only thing keeping this bus from passing inspection in VA. The bus runs great. It has a 1700 CC engine and it starts up fast and runs great at idle and going down the road. It will easily cruise at 65 - 70 mph. It is a great bus to drive. The engine has no issues that I know of. It had a single weber carb, but I went back to the stock dual carbs years ago. The exhaust is in good shape. I just purchased a new battery isolator because I think that the one in the bus is defective. I have not installed the new one, but it will go with the bus. I also have one piece of engine tin that needs to be installed in the bus, but I think the engine needs to be removed to install it. The bus also comes with a great condition BN6 heater. This heater goes under the belly of the bus and uses the existing heat duct work. I have all the wiring, timer, etc for the heater, but I have never fired it up. I never installed it or tested it, but it is all there. This would be a great addition to the bus and they are hard to come by in this great condition. I have a brand new pair of Koni shocks for it, new in the box. Also put a new set of Vanco tires on it several years ago and they have very little wear. The wheels were stripped down to bare metal and covered in POR 15 before being painted silver. This was done 5 years ago and they still look great. I have some other parts around that I will round up and give with the bus. Manuals come with it. I have a book that lists all the maintenance that the previous owner did to the bus and all the places that they drove it. It is fun to look at this and imagine all the fun they had driving all over the US. Recap of above: The good: Interior is completeGreat tires BN6 gas heater Runs great Windshield wipers just removed and lubricated Mosquito screen for back door New Koni shocks Front baby cot Extra 12 volt charger ports on side of fridge New relay for dual battery charging Locking Gas cap Left rear quarter window was removed and full length window installed 110 volt exterior hookup cable included Manuals Some of the history of the bus and the maintenance included in a log book. Cloth privacy curtain that goes inside of bus across front window. Vinyl privacy cover that goes on outside of front and side windows. Made for an rv, but fits this bus just fine. The bad: Needs some work to the surface rust on the outside. Windshield area needs metal repair Left rear quarter panel needs some metal repair Battery boxes might need some repair Horn does not work Upper cot canvas needs to be replaced There is surface rust under the front mats, but it is not rusted through. Check the pics, it is solid despite the surface rust. Whoever gets this bus will be getting a great running bus with little work needed to go enjoy it now. The bodywork needs to be done, but it does not stop the bus from being enjoyed. I hate to see it go, but I hate to see if rusting away and not being used. I require a $200 deposit within 48 hours after the end of the auction. This needs to be done with paypal or cash. Feel free to email me and ask questions.
