Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is this 1970 International Harvester Scout 4WD (800A), limited-edition Aristocrat model. There were only 2,500 made of this model. According to the Line Setting Ticket, this was number 3 off the assembly line, manufactured in October of 1969. I am the original owner; I bought it new off the show room floor from a dealer in Northern California in the Spring of 1970. At my request, the dealer swapped in a 4-speed transmission (T-45) out of another Scout, to replace the 3-speed it was manufactured with. It has a limited-slip differential. The engine is the 232 CI inline 6-cylinder. I have had it professionally re-built twice, most recently less than 2,500 miles ago. It really isn’t broken in yet! I had a slightly milder cam installed to try to get better gas mileage. For most of its life, it has gotten about 16 MPG on the highway; with the new cam it appears to be getting about 17 MPG before even being completely broken in. I had the original points and condenser replaced with a magnetically activated Pertronix Ignitor. It runs and idles smoothly. It has a dealer-installed roll bar, covered with foam and tape, and attached shoulder harnesses. Because the vacuum-actuated windshield wipers have always been problematic when climbing a hill, I added a vacuum reservoir and 12V vacuum pump to assist the fuel pump in supplying adequate vacuum under full throttle. I had new shocks installed by Sears about 5 years ago, and the Wal-Mart battery is relatively new. There is still a lot of good rubber on the oversize mud and snow tires, mounted on original factory chrome wheels. The tires are 30X9.50 R15 tubeless radials with 4-ply treads (2 polyester + 2 steel) and 2-ply sidewalls. There are snow-chains for all four wheels. It has a lifetime Midas muffler on it that was installed about 5 years ago, but it has split a seam at the top and will need to be replaced; the exhaust manifold and tubing was replaced at the same time. There is a new, aftermarket polyethylene gas tank on the passenger side that was installed last Summer. It does not have the original rear bumper; I replaced it with an aftermarket Barden bumper, with a trailer hitch. The interior of the car is very clean, considering that the car is 44 years old. The upholstery is in very good condition, although the front carpets need to be replaced. Basically, everything still works, although perhaps not like new. The vehicle is low on the left side because of a buckling body mount. This is a California car that had no rust on it when I drove it out here to Ohio 10 years ago. However, despite being zinc-dipped and undercoated at the factory, salt on the roads has taken its toll, and being retired, I have neither the incentive nor money to properly remediate the salt damage. Before it gets any worse, I thought that I would see if someone wanted to use this as either a restoration project or as parts for another Aristocrat. See the pictures for details of the condition. It comes with miscellaneous spare parts, including fuel pump, alternator, and carburetor. I have the original IH shop manual along with other literature about the Aristocrat, including the original owner’s manual in the glove compartment. I’m not certain about the total mileage because the odometer has rolled over at least three times; I have lost track. It currently says 95030. However, my best guess is that it is close to about 500,000 total miles. I strongly encourage you to inspect and drive it. Please ask before bidding if you have any concerns or questions. You will be expected to pick it up at my house. I will only accept payment with a certified or cashier’s check; no cash. Because the transferred registration will need to be notarized, pick-up will have to take place during business hours during the week, or on Saturday morning when my credit union is open. Sale is final with no returns.
