Vehicle Detail

1969 AMX with strong, rebuilt 343 with smooth shifting 4-spd hurst shifter, power brakes, needs complete restoration but a good starting point. Purchased this vehicle about 3 years ago from a retired diesel mechanic who had relocated from New Jersey to Ormond Beach. Had intentions of complete restoration, but then purchased an already restored AMX and lost interest in this project. New fuel tank and sending unit, new rear tires (BF Goodrich Radial T/A - 245/60R14). Car has a New Jersey title dated 2002 and has been off the road for the last 10-20 years. The diesel mechanic purchased the car at some point around 2003 and began the slow process of restoration. Have some photos from his early efforts and receipts. Motor rebuild receipts from Performance Automotive Warehouse in Chatsworth, California from May, 2004. Less than 200 miles since motor rebuild. The former owner also stripped the car of trim, made minor rust repair panels at each lower quarter, hood nose, behind seat floorboards, and trunk area. He then rough painted the car blue to preserve the rest of the car during continued restoration processes. It appears the paint may be the correct blue (paint code 65A), but this rough spray was done about 10 years ago. Basically, this car need to be media blasted, body re-assessed and repaired correctly, and re-painted correctly. Should make for a reasonably easy restoration, and major mechanicals are in good shape. The following information is my assessment of the vehicle and it's deficiencies. Mechanicals Strong rebuilt engine, new battery, good clutch and shifter. Mild cam, Eldebrock manifold, bigger car (choke not connected). Guessing 350 hp for engine. Aftermarket oil and pressure gauges read accurately (40-60 psi oil and 180 degrees when warm). Tachometer bounces around 0 rpm and doesn't read. Light are not hooked up. Fuel gauge does not register although it has a brand new fuel tank and sending unit. Brakes grab quickly and excessively in front (disc), and rears don't seem to activate. The car can be started and driven onto a trailer or transport vehicle, but then needs to be towed home. Suspension seems pretty tight and responsive. Basically, you get good running gear with this vehicle. Included with car are parts an pieces to add back the A/C components. Exhaust system has been somewhat piecemealed together under the car, but sounds real good. At idle, there is an exhaust tick/leak coming from underside of driver side header. At 2,000 rpm and above, this goes away and/or you don't hear it. Hydraulic brake line has a cut-out switch for rear wheels indicating the car might have seen some drag-strip time, also might be why rear brakes don't seem to activate like front. Interior/Trunk Car does not have correct AMC seats. The seats in the car look like GM seats (maybe Oldsmobile) from the late 60's or early 70's (probably have some value). Needs complete interior kit including carpet, seats, door panels, and headliner. Need to remove dashboard, check all wiring, and reassemble. Front floorboards are solid with no signs of rust repair. Behind each seat, patch panels welded in (common water collection area for AMX'x). The trunk has a patch panel welded in across the back of the trunk and connects up with the rear valance panel. With a little work, you could make this look okay and get a reproduction carpet. This trunk repair was done before they started making trunk reproduction panels. All glass is good and comes with car. No chips/stars in windshield. Passenger glass is starting to separate from base of track, so that needs attention. Exterior This is a fairly rust free example of an AMX and you won't have to battle significant rust demons. The area around the rear window is very good and this is a common rust location for AMX's and difficult area to repair. As noted, the underside of the hood has evidence of fiberglass repair (common issue), the lower quarters have patch panels. The fenders, doors, and rockers are solid with no evidence of bondo. The passenger door sticks out at the lower bottom possibly due to the glass not aligning at the top. I recommend a new passenger door. The rough paint job has runs, sags, and surface rust - needs to be stripped completely. Evidence of racing stripe under paint on roof, or where it wasn't removed and sanded perfectly. Trunk lid is rust-free. Have front and rear bumpers (front bumper has a dent), several sets of taillights, badges, trim, good front grill, decent lens filler panel, assorted chrome, etc. None of the used trim pieces are top-notch show quality and will require polishing and/or replacement to be perfect. Cannot guarantee that have every exterior piece to complete, but it is a good start. Pricing Low reserve auction. Your bid is a contract. No tire kickers. Please, serious AMX bidders only and bring a trailer. $1,000 non-refundable deposit within 5 business days, balance due at pick-up of vehicle or before shipper arrives. Thanks for looking!
