Vehicle Detail

For sale: A real piece of history. This dry high desert 62 Travelette crew cab C-120 4x4 with 8000lb Ramsey PTO winch was originally used by the USAF to haul Minuteman missile crews and gear around north central Montana during the cold war. After it was retired from military duty, it was purchased by the Museum of the Rockies for use as a dinosaur hunting vehicle on Egg Mountain, where Jack Horner of Jurassic Park fame made his important fossil discoveries. It was used there during the 1980s and then purchased by an alumni of the paleontology field school in the 1990s, and I bought it from him, so there were three owners that I am aware of before me - and all performed very regular maintenance. The truck is in good survivor condition with no rot and only very minor surface rust. Here in the land of sagebrush and prickly pear cactus, we only see 10 inches of total moisture per year and no salt is used on the roads. The truck is ready to use as is, or restore for the next Scottsdale auction. I'll do my best to describe this very special truck below - THE DINOSAUR HUNTER. History: I have an affidavit from the previous owner confirming the truck's use and also emails from Jack Horner and the current director of the field school. The signage on the doors was intact when I got the vehicle, the Triceratops stickers are the originals from 30 years ago. I had the lettering touched up in a few spots as it was pretty faded. I have the original owners manuals. The director told me that this truck was used to haul water, personnel and gear up Egg Mountain. The school had another similar 4x4 Travellete that was rolled down the mountain by a staff member, and that truck had low mileage, so the engine from the rolled truck was transplanted to this truck, since it had higher mileage. It runs great and is a blast to drive. I can only imagine the impact this truck would have at cruise night a the Steak and Shake, or Cars and Coffee! Exterior: Perfect survivor patina. Looks like the truck was repainted once in it's life. No major rust issues, I'd say 98 percent rust free. There is some surface rust around front park lights (shown) and at bottom of passenger fender, but we don't just don't see major rust or rot issues in this arid country- there's just no moisture. There is surface rust in the floor of the box .No rust even in tailgate or lower rear box corners! There are dents in the hood, and a spot where filler is cracking at front rear box panel. Really an honest rig, you can see that it's very straight and dry overall. I don't see any rust underneath at all, I will upload pics when I get to a hoist, but it's super clean. Glass is all in good condition including windshield, which has one small chip. Door key lock on driver side is not installed, but is included in glovebox. Not sure the door key lock works on the other side. The passenger rear cab mount area is broken around the mount, and that cab corner sags a bit. A hasty field repair was attempted, but it needs to be re-welded around that cab mount - will upload pics. Grille and stainless is good with no pitting whatsoever, There is a hole in passenger side box where CB antenna was. The original 102 inch whip antenna is still mounted to the cab and the original Motorola PA speaker is under the dash. Interior: All original except front seat, which was recovered, and very presentable and ready to use as is. Factory IH branded spotlight works. Dash in good shape. Original floor mats are not torn up. Steering wheel has a cracked out area near horn button. Door panels and rear panels need repainted, and driver armrest is missing. Headliner is warped in a few spots. Everything seems to work except horn and radio. Gauges all work but fuel and temp seem to read low. Weatherstrips are all pretty dried out. Overall really nice shape for a truck of this age and no issues to drive and use. Mechanical: I took the Dinosaur Hunter to a professional mechanic to be thoroughly checked over. The fuel system was completely drained and the carb rebuilt and the brakes and clutch systems bled. Complete service and lube was performed and the rear u-joint replaced. As stated above, the original 266 was replaced by this lower mileage motor out of the other truck. Starts, runs, drives out well. No major issues - engine runs very smooth and pulls hard and trans shifts well. Most IH V8's seem to have lifter noise, this one has none. Purrs like a sewing machine. No noticeable smoke or major leaks. The short rubber fuel filler hose from the filler neck is weathered and will need to be replaced - it will drip gas while filling the truck. I tested the transfer case and the low range works fine. The previous owner told me the winch works great but I never tested it. Also the right rear brake will lock up sometimes if you stand on the brakes hard. Tires have good tread but there are weather cracks so they will need replacement at some point. They are tube type, so I think they can be driven on safely for a while as is. I've put a couple hundred miles on and from what I can tell it's ready to use and enjoy. It does have a very noticeable tire shake above 55mph, I suspect it's a bent rim. I only putted to work in the truck, and never took it out on the highway. The spare wheel looks good, so it could be swapped on. Pricing/Misc: I got a good deal on this rig and you will too. This is a very special truck, and I'd like to see it go to a serious IHC fan or fossil collector or museum. I am only selling because I bought a similar IH 4x4 truck with 20k actual miles and prefer it. I'm not looking to get rich on this truck, although I suspect there may be a market for it as the next specialty theme vehicle at Barrett Jackson. The War Wagon themed 66 Travelall when well over $100k, but this truck is listed with a reserve under $5k for quick sale. Title is clear and in my name. GOOD LUCK! Keep in mind that with all cars, THEY LOOK BETTER IN PICTURES THAN IN PERSON. THANK YOU************** On May-26-14 at 21:14:49 PDT, seller added the following information: *****************Ok as promised here is the link to the underside pics and the rear passenger cab mount. Found only very minor rust behind both rear wheels where mud built up, and some at each footwell where the window seal leaked down into that area. (all shown). NO RUST that I can see under bed, in floors, frame, rockers, cab mounts, cab drop-offs, etc. About as clean as they come for an IH of this era. Looks like what happened with the cab mount is that the support above it broke at the factory weld, and as shown in pic from inside a hasty repair was attempted. What needs to happen is the corner of the cab needs to be jacked up and the support re-welded properly. The rest of the mounts look fine. I don't think I have ever seen another C series without rust in the driver floor or tailgate or rear box drop-offs. Any questions please ask well before the auction ends as I will be traveling the Saturday before. THANKS******* http://s261.photobucket.com/user/burgundyamx/library/Travelette?sort=3&page=1
