Vehicle Detail
1960 Chevrolet El Camino NO RESERVE Thanks for checking out my 1960 Chevy El Camino, I am a Ford guy in general, but these 1st Gen El Camino's when it comes to Ute's are the best, out of the El Camino's and Ranchero's in my opinion, hopefully non of my Ford friends see me writing this. My first love for the early El Caminos were way back, my mom drove one of these back and forth to high school in 1965. My grandparents, owned the Desert Hills Motel, in Kennewick, WA, and their El Camino, wings and all, was painted bright yellow, with the logo on the door, it was my moms cruiser. I always wanted one of these rigs, to many projects right now to pursue this one. After some research, I never realized that the 1960 El Camino were the lowest in production made. 1959 Total was 22,246, and 1960 was only 14,163. 2nd gen El Camino's stared in 1964 and continued til 87, but the 59-60 models are in a league of their own. You rarely see these rigs around, and now I know why, many of them have not survived. Now I know when I see one for $5K, that is sitting in the weeds, rusting away with out a drivetrain that they are pretty valuable. This El Camino, is actually in pretty good shape considering what it is, it does have some rust that needs to be repaired, but the bones of it are in actually very good shape, plus you can drive it right now and enjoy it this summer. Your not looking at a restored car, you are looking at an El Camino, that has been built into driver, a Rat Rod if you want to call it that, it has the look for sure. This car could be easily transformed if someone wanted to, take it down do the repairs, and build it back to original, I think it is a pretty good car. I bought a 1966 Nova Super Sport, and this was there with the Nova, and I liked the looks of it, I liked the potential, I liked the memories from the past of my grandparents, so I had to bring it home with me as well, I buy and sell, but I buy what makes me feel good. There are not many cars that I pass up on, especially when I get sentimental. Anyways, in this auction you are going to see the good and the bad on this car, you are going to see over 75 photos of it. At the end of the day, you can keep it just like this and tinker with it. Lets talk about the body of it first. These cars in general suffered a lot from rust, it is very hard to find one today as I mentioned. They are know for having rusty floors, rockers, and rear quarters panels and the bed is usually gone. The frame on this car original X frame, in very nice shape, no signs of rust on it, no signs of any rust repairs that I could see, no signs of any accident damage or frame damage. It will need a full floor pan, from front to back, from were you put your feet, to the section under the front part of bed. The gentleman we got it from, just wanted to drive it and enjoy it instead of sitting and looking at it in the driveway, he did not have the funds to do it right, so he made due, which I think is fine as long as it is reversible. The floors are bad, so what he did to is put patches on top of the floors under carpet, and screwed and riveted the panels in on top to reinforce the floors. He did not weld them in, because he was going to replace them at some point in the future, so good that he screwed them in. The rear quarters behind the wheels, which are always rusty, with this car no exception. Basically, he just cut some of the rust away, and filled the areas with bondo and some spray foam, not the right way to do it, I know, but he was building a low budget hot rod, and when time and money came around, he could just cut the quarters out correctly, and have new ones welded back in. Do I like the quarters, no, but it is not the end of the world, I show pictures, they are what the are, and they work for now, most people wouldn't have a clue until I showed them. So the floors and the quarters behind the wheels, on the wheel lip on drivers side need replaced. The bottom of the tailgate does have some rust as well. But other then that, the floors, rear quarters, the El Camino is pretty solid, it has very nice rockers, actually pretty amazing, inner framing all looks very solid as well. I am actually pretty impressed with this car in general after having it on my lift, even with the ugly things I already new about, it has really good bones. The inner door jams are very good, all the way around. The roof gutters are good as well. The bed area is actually really nice no rust issues, very clean, I am impressed with it actually. The paint is a Hot Rod Black Epoxy, nothing special, it was just scuffed down, the body was fairly straight, a few areas filled in, the guy was pretty honest about the repairs that he made like the floors etc. The doors shut very nice and open, the hood and tailgate shut nicely and line up nice. The body does have small waves in it, and imperfections in the paint, but it was done around 5-6 years ago, it is showing its age, but has some patina, it sits outside most of the time, and is driven often, so the paint has aged. It has very nice pinstripes on it, painted on, and the car just has a great look to it. These cars are very rare, and restored can bring a lot of money done right, this car has potential. This is the best part of about this El Camino. It drives awesome, the 350 starts right up, has a very nice tune, backed by the Chevy T10 4spd, the car just feels great out on the road. My first time behind the wheel, with all its flaws that it has, just made me smile, because it is just a great little driver, and every where you drive it, it just turns heads, many people don't even know what it is. The engine from what I have found online from the Stamp Pad V0131CKR is a 1973-77 350 4V, engine. It was built about 10 years ago, has a 480 lift Cam in it, ported cylinder heads, GM Aluminum 4V intake, Rochester 4v Carb, Long tube headers, MSD HEI Ignition. The engine starts right up, it does not blow any smoke, pretty clean running little motor. Idles nicely as well, and has decent power, very nice cruising car, but it does have some get up and go, especially with the T10 4spd, which makes life just a little more interesting. The transmission does shift nice, it stays in gear, clutch feels very good. The brakes work great, notice the highend Chrome Power brake booster, this is very nice, installed recently, still running drums all the away around, but ready for disc upfront. The wheels are steel wheels, 1960 Impala Racing Flag Hubcaps. the tires are good tires, they are BFG tires, that have been rubbed back to expose the white wall under the black. The are decent, good tires, when you get up close to the white wall, along the edge of the rim and white section, he touched it up a little with white paint, you have to look close, you see the white paint cracking a little, not the Tire, it is good, just the touch up he did. They look great from 10-20 feet away, most people would not pay attention, if you point it out, they look closer and notice. I think it looks great with the white walls though, just has a great look, tires have about 75% tread on them. Mechanically, the drivability of it is great, we have had it out on the freeway, and it is a hoot to drive. So it does need some tinkering. The Speedometer and odometer do work, but the speedometer is way off, maybe because of the lower profile tires, it reads 75mph when you are going 50mph. There are some after market gauges below the dash, they do work. None of the other gauges work on the dash, no fuel gauge either, not working. The heater blower does not turn on, never looked into what is wrong, because the heater core is bad, and has been by passed inside the engine compartment. Interior is pleasant to drive in but as you can see it has some needs. The seat is from a 1969 Chevelle I think, it has good springs, the bottom of the seat, I have never looked, it is covered, but I know it has some rips in it, and needs repaired, personally I would just find a 60 impala seat have it covered, or do the Mexican blanket thing and call it good. Door panels are bad, dash area is good, but just needs restored. No headliner, it is gone. The drivers window, needs to be taken apart, it keeps coming off track, and you have to mess with it, when you are rolling it up and just get it just right to put it back up. When it leaves, I will make sure it is up. Until you roll it down and experience for yourself there is no way to explain it, besides it needs fixed. There are no door keys for the lock cylinders. The windshield wipers are not working, the dash lights don't work or horn, it needs a lot of tinkering in the dash components, some might be fuses, some might be switches, never looked to be honest, I just drive. Exterior lights are working, except the lic plate light. Headlights work, running lights are working, but there is a little switch under the dash, on steering column that is affecting the blinkers, need to get under and look, if I put my and down below, they start working something might be loose and affecting the brake lights and turnsignals, I may not have time to get them working correctly. As you can see the interior needs a little work, one of the major issues, that needs to be addressed , is the window seals, around the front windshield (which has some chips and wiper wear), and the rear window, the gaskets are cracked, and in heavy rain, the carpet gets wet. If you do not have time to fix them, a little window gasket sealant might be helpful for time being, there is none on it currently.
