Vehicle Detail
1979 Pontiac Trans Am Thank you for viewing my 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. I have owned many of these cars in the last few years, and being a Ford guy, they just make me smile, since Ford had nothing really to offer during the late 70's when it came to performance or style when it came to Muscle Cars. These are great driving cars they feel solid, and ride awesome for the times. This Trans Am, is a running driving project car. I got this from a gentleman who bought it in 2004, and he would work on it here and there as time allowed, hoping to eventually restore it. Just until recently he decided to let her go, and let someone else enjoy it and make it the car of their dreams. What I like about this Trans Am, is that it has a very solid body, underneath is very clean, no rust, floors and trunk area are very clean and solid. This is about my 12th Trans Am that I have owned, and as a project car, this is a good starting point for someone on a budget, due to the fact that it is not rusty. Someone over in the rust belt would consider this a real find. The rust that it does have is very minor a little in the bottom of doors, and trunk lid and a couple little pimples. The undercarriage and structure of the car is great. This is the original Sundance Yellow (code 51) color on the car, I do not know all its options but, Real Trans AM - W code in vin, Sundace Yellow, Carmine Red Cloth Interior (switched it to mostly Black), Red/Orange Firebird on hood, Air Conditioning, K - 403 Olds (now has a Olds 350). The paint on this car is in poor shape, has no gloss to it left, it has been repainted once from what I can see. The Fiberglass spoilers and original pieces seem to be in decent shape, but need restored. The doors are solid, passenger side in the bottom corner has a little bit of rust coming through. Drivers door looks solid, has a few small dents in it. Both fenders have some little pimples starting in the passenger one, the drivers side has a little rust coming through. The hood is in good condition. The quarter panels are very solid, the wheel lips look great, not rusty, and behind the wheels on quarters are very good. This car has its original quarters and sheet metal on the car which is a good thing few small creases and dents. Around the rear window is in good shape no rust. The glass is all intact as well no chips or cracks in it. If you restore, you will put new gaskets around windows, and seal them. The rubber gaskets on doors, trunk all need replaced, they are old and lets say retired. The rear quarters are factory, if you look inside the flange about 18" on top has been trimmed to put larger tires on it. If you put original wheels on it, you could fix the flange, or just leave it, because the actual wheel openings are still factory and have not been touched, no one would know unless they were underneath the car, just letting you know, pretty common on these on these old 70's cars, everyone wanted a huge pair of meats on the rear, just like this car has, if I grew a mustache and could grow hair again, I would look the part, but no one likes a Bald guy with a mullet. Overall the body condition, is decent, but look at the pictures, you will see minor dings and small creases here and there, roof is very good not dented. Please, hear me, the paint is shot, so you are not going to go home and buff it out, it is old. Overall the exterior needs a very good restoration, but from 30-40' feet away, she looks great as you come closer you realize she need to be repainted. As for filler on the car, it probably has some, but I do not see any bondo cracks or any abuse on it actually, it seems pretty clean. Someone started sanding on the hood, this is were you can see the original paint, and the 1 repaint. The interior was original Carmine Red Cloth interior. My only guess is, that someone did not want the red interior, or the seats were in bad shape, they had or found a parts car, with decent black interior and switched out, good guess because that what it looks like. The carpet needs replaced you can see some remnants of the red still there. The Dash is original to the car. The seats, and Console (if you notice has PW switch, and 8 Track option in it) are black. The seats are actually in pretty good shape, but the drivers seat has a split on the bottom cushion and a tear were the seat belt comes through on top. Back seat is very nice. The dash pad is in excellent shape, which is amazing, No cracks. The steering wheel is original, but the rubber around the edge is bad. So the gauges, what works and what doesn't. The Speedo and Odometer work, Wipers Work, Rear Defogger works, Heater blow works, Amp and Oil Pressure Gauge work. The Radio is not hooked up, Clock does not work, Tach does not work, and Dome Light is not working. Headliner, is not factory is some type of fuzzy headliner, but is in okay shape, missing one visor. The rear package tray needs replaced. The console is in good shape overall, the door on top of it, needs attached, it just comes off, needs its hardware. Windshield wipers work, but will need new blades Overall in a nut shell that interior is what it is, useable, but needs restored. As for driving, it does start right up idles nicely, a little cold blooded let it warm up first. It has a Olds 350 in it, not sure the year, I think it is a 1977 from the small pad on the drivers of black. It has 3A heads on it, and an Olds 350 Aluminum 4V intake manifold. It had leaky valve cover gaskets, so I put on some new gaskets on it, and lightly sanded and cleaned the valve covers and repainted them, not professional paint, just made them look nicer under the hood. The Carb is a Edelbrock 600cfm 4V, with Automatic choke, very nice carb, about 1 year old, with very little miles, still looks pretty new. Holley Track Flow - Air Filter with Edelbrock Chrome cover. The engine starts right up, and does not blow smoke, has a nice sound to it, still has its Original Trans Am dual rear tips on it. This is a vehicle that you can run and drive, go to the store, drive back and forth to work, take to the local cruise in or just park in the garage and work on it. I do not know anything about the engine in general as far as what it is out of, rebuilds, miles etc, underneath the valve covers were fairly clean, no issues that noticed, rockers all looked pretty clean. Overall, the engine looks to be in good shape as far as I can tell, and has decent power. The transmission seams to be in good shape, not sure if it is original to the car, never really looked. It does shift good, no noise, the kick down works as well. The brakes work good on the car as well. This car was a factory AC car, but needs the pump and hoses, the main unit is still on the firewall, and the dash area. The wheels are 15X7 and 15X10 Cragers look pretty cool if you like that old school look. I do have a set of Snowflakes, Caps and Lugs, NOT INCLUDED IN SALE, they need restored, the Caps and Lugs are excellent though, if the Winner of the auction to buy them, $400, just an option if you want to make it look original. Overall, mechanically it seems to be in good shape. It also has a brand new Battery in it as well. It will need new shocks all the way around, it is pretty bouncy, and feels like a boat going down, likes to float around, the bigger tires make it feel like that as well, but because of its age obviously needs front end bushing and stuff like that. Tires are in good shape, 85% I would say all the way around, no cracks in them, BFG upfront P235/70/15 and Grand Am Radial GT P275/60/15 in the rear. The undercarriage is in great shape, very clean floors, frame rails are very clean. I pulled the front carpet up as well, and very nice original floors, with no rust. As I mentioned before the valve cover gaskets were shot, and were dripping a lot through the years in the back bottom corners, so there is a lot of oil residue under the car, which probably helped preserve this old girl underneath. Everything else looks in order underneath. No signs of any damage, or wrecks. Inside the trunk area, is in good shape, floor in trunk is very solid. It has some over spray, and some light surface rust, very light no pitting, just residue from the old mat, I painted it black, to make it look better, but actually you can actually see what it looks like better actually. Original quarter panels, very clean inside and across the taillight panel is clean. Overall the structure and bone of this car are very impressive. Yes it needs a restore, yes, she need some work, but overall it is a decent project. All the exterior lights are working, except the lic plate light, horn works though.
