Vehicle Detail

This is going to be long a long description. Basically though, this would make a very nice Project, for someone who already is familiar with 1800's, and is willing to do the work. All the parts are there. Or, the parts could be a great help, on several other 1800 projects. Eleven years ago, I bought a 1973 Volvbo 1800es, with a blown-engine (a rod was sticking out through the block). My plan was to build a new engine, and replace the Auto-Trans with a Manual, do a little fix-up work, customize it a bit, and drive it. It didn't quite work out that way. I discovered lots of rust under the chrome parts. So, I decided a complerte tear-down andrebuild of the car, would make a great project. I did not want to "restore" it to factory original (there are already lots of those around). I am more into "custom" builds, and wanted something original. I striped the car down pretty bare, pulled and disposed of the blown engine Block, keeping only the Head, Valve. I worked on it off-and-on (mostly off), for several years (no work since 2009) At the same time, I started remodeling an 80 year-old house. And, the two different projects fought each other! To make a long story short: I tore the car apart and bought lots of new parts, and worked on it for a while. But, I became more interested in working on the house, and the Volvo project got side-lined. I am getting older now, and my time is more valuable. So, I have decided it is best to let someone else take over this project. I am selling the car, all my parts, along with my information collection. I am not interesting in selling individual items separately. It must all go together. I will give a list below, of what I have done so far. If you are already into old Volvos, this could be a good opportunity to ad to your parts collection. If you are new to old Volvos, my collection of information and books, should help you get started. I am showing just a few of my photos here, but I have plenty more to share, if you contact me. Thanks for reading this. Body The body does not have any noticeable dents, and is all there. I have uncovered all the rusty areas, and sprayed a little primer on them. I also ground out some bad areas, which will need patched (see photos), nothing that would require new body-parts though. I removed a lot of the chrome-trim, which are still in good condition. I saved it all, except for the two front-fender, two door-side pieces of trim. These were dented up too bad to save. (stupid place to have chrome anyway!) I was just going to fill-in the holes, along the sides. I did save the two short rear-side trim-pieces though. The Hood is strait and dent-free. It did collect a lot of surface-rust, in the last 8 years though(under a car-cover?). I have removed the worst of it, and sprayed some primer on. The Roof also needs sanding. All the glass is good, doors open and close OK, Rear hatch is also good, and I installed two new Struts on it. The roof-rack in the photo, is not installed (just sitting up there). I bought it later, and was thinking about mounting it later (would hate to drill holes in the roof though). It is included in the auction. Engine: I got a good start on building a new Engine. Block: I obtained 1972 B20 1990cc Block. I had it Line-bored, Block-Decked, and Over-Bored .50cc ( to accept B21 Heads, for a 2150cc total) I obtained an 9-Bolt Crank & Flywheel. I had the Crank Polished (no grinding was necessary) I obtained a set of B21 Rods, Pistons with new Rings and Bearings. I obtained a new IPD Street-Torque Cam I Assembled the Short-Block with the new Bearings and new 24mm Piston Pins. Head: I kept the original B20-F Head (fuel-injection type), but have did no work to it. Previous owner had it rebuilt 60,000 miles ago, so some work will be needed.. I bought an IPD Big-Bore Head-gasket for it, It is also extra-thick to reduce the compression ratio, when installed over-bored engine (very hard to find now!). I also have a Factory standard Head-gasket I never used). I obtained used Chrome Valve-cover, and Oil-filler cap, but also still have originals. I have 2 new Valve cover gaskets (1 is Rubber, 1 is Cork) Carb: When I pulled the old engine, I sold all the Fuel-Injection parts on eBay. I obtained a used Weber 32/36 Progressive two-barrel carb, and Manifold (with new gasket). I do have a new Weber Rebuild-kit (2K1136), Weber Fuel Cable-conversion-kit (2K1252), and Weber Linkage-kit (2K1202). Transmissions When I obtained the car it a rebuilt Automatic transmission, which I was told worked perfectly. My plan was to switch to a 4-speed w/OD M41. I pulled the Auto out and saved it. Then, I bought a used M41 w/OD transmission with all necessary install-parts( Pedals, brackets, etc) from Don Thibault Volvo parts in Maine. I also have a new heavy-duty German-made Clutch Plate So, I now have the original Auto-Trans, plus the Manual M41 w/OD. I am including both in this auction. Interior I gutted the entire interior, except for the roof-liner, to expose any rust. But, I kept the stripped pieces, and still have them. While I was at Don Thibault's to pick up the M41, I bought two of his Rebuilt 1800 Front-Seats, in new Black leather. They look just like new. except for one small area on the lower part of one seat-back. I got some white paint on it, and while removing the paint, caused a rub-area on the leather (see pic of seats). ( I did have to leave him my two old worn seats, as a trade-in though. The backseats are original Vinyl and in good condition, but are in a Tan color. All the interior vinyl panels are also a Tan color. (I had planned on staining them all Black, with a can of vinyl-stain.) The carpet was a nice color brown, and in good shape, except for a couple small pieces, which are sun-bleached. (see photo) The Rear cargo-area had an extra Green piece of carpet, over the brown, which kept the brown carpet. protected? This extra piece is also sun-bleached, and stained. Tires & Wheels Since I wanted a custom-look, I sold the original rusty-wheels and worn-tires. I was able to locate and buy 6 Volvo Virgo Wheels, originally from a Volvo 240 GT. These are the newest Volvo wheels that will fit 1800 bolt-patterns. I figured if I bought all 6, I would have at least 4 good ones, and 2 spares, in case they were ever needed. All 6 are included in this auction. I also have a like-new Spare tire (all season), mounted on an original wheel. Then, I bought 4 new Bridgestone Directional-Potenza RE950 ( 205/60HR15) tires from Tire from Tire Rack. I had them mounted, and just put them on the car last week. The tires have "0" miles on them. Misc. Items This car did come with factory-AC. Unfortunately, The Compressor was seized-up, when I bought it, and I discarded it. All other AC items are still there though, so a person could install a new one if wanted? The Radiator is almost like new, since the previous had already replaced it. The Front Grill also looks great (and that's rare) The exhaust system is all there, and in good condition. It was replaced by previous owner. This car has 4-wheel duel-piston disk brakes. That is pretty rare for a 40 year old car. Work Done I did spend about a month, a couple years ago, working under the rear-end (hard and dirty work!). I removed the rear-drive assembly (Axle, Dif, Brakes, etc.) I also removed the Gas-tank, Springs, Shocks, etc.). I under-coated the entire rear under-side. I scrubbed all the grease & oil, from the removed parts. I repainted and installed the rear-drive assembly with all new Bushings & Straps, except for the Brake-rotors & pads. I still have the original Rotors though.. I painted the gas-tank, and laid it back in place. (not bolted yet). I installed a new set of Billstein Shocks, and IPD Overload Springs. The old springs were shot, so I discarded them. But, the new springs seem too stiff! a set of "'new" Original ones, would probably better? In addition to all the "Old" parts that I saved, I will try and list most of the "New" items I have here (bought over the years), that I have not already mentioned above. I know I will miss a few items though (just too many). So, you will probably get more than is listed here. IPD Heavy-duty Oil Pump with High Pressure Spring. Still in box. IPD Rebuilt Front Engine Housing with Silicon Seal. Not installed yet. IPD Rebuilt Rear Engine Housing with Silicon Seal. Loosely attached to Engine. Since I never bought one, I put the original wheel back on yesterday. The bad news is, I can't locate the large nut, that secures it? I suspect that it is the car some where (among the lots of junk). If not it will show up somewhere in the boxes full of parts I have? I never threw it away. That's it. Contact me, at wva4u@yahoo.com to receive 24 more photos, and if you have any questions? On Sep-12-13 at 23:32:55 PDT, seller added the following information: Important Note: Anyone bidding on this car, should really contact me first, to receive my other 25 photos. These extra photos show more Details and Parts, than I was able to show in the original listing. They will give you a more complete understanding of what to expect. ThanksOn Sep-14-13 at 09:25:02 PDT, seller added the following information: Two little things that I forgot to mention: The short Distributer-to-camshaft drive-shaft, has gear-damage (came from the blown-engine), and you will need a new one. Also, you will need an engine Pulley-Bolt, for the front-end of the 9-Bolt Crank-shaft (it is larger than the original bolt). You can obtain both of these from Don Thilbaults. On Sep-15-13 at 16:16:00 PDT, seller added the following information: I just remembered two more items (but these are good ones). When I assembled the new engine-block, I installed "new" set of Steel Timing-gears on the front-end (these are not cheap or easy to find!). Also, when I had the rear-end out of the car, I installed a new Oil-Seal to the drive-shaft output. On Sep-15-13 at 23:41:36 PDT, seller added the following information: Remembered another item that's needs mentioned: Although the wheels are mounted on the car, There are no Brake-Disk mounted. The two Rear-Disc (with Parking-Drums), are lying inside the car. I discarded the two Front-Disk, since I had planned on buying new ones. That's it for now?
