Vehicle Detail
1940 Ford Deluxe - Hot Rod - 1950's-60's This is a REAL Deal Hot Rod pretty much in hibernation for over 35 years at least, not on the road for 40+. This is the kind of car, that people are trying to reproduce by building Traditional Hot Rods today, when you find a real one built in the day this is always a real treat. This car was built in the late 1950's early 60's, originally built as a show car. It was built down in Southern California, was brought up here in Oregon, to a town called Mill City. Gentleman went down to California bought it and drove it back. A friend of mine, used to cruise in it around the Salem, and Portland area, in the mid to late 1960's. The car ended up parked in the early 1970's. The gentleman went through a divorce, and his ex-wife got the car. She parked it out with a for sale sign on it, along hwy 22. My friend wanted to get out there and try and buy it, but he was to late. A guy that built race cars here in Salem, bought it to flip it. My friend about a month later bought it from him. He bought the car in the late 70's, at that time it was not running had been parked, last tagged in 1978. He owned the car for 25 years, parked in his shop, and never touched it because of time and money, plus all his other projects. Around 2003 he decided to sell the car. Next owner bought it owned it for 10 years, and did not touch it til last year. He had someserious health problems, in his 70's, and he decided to get it running while he could. So he did various things to it, so he could hear it run, and get it back on the road. His plan was to fix it all up, paint it, and build a street rod. Thank goodness, he decided to let it go, because a car like this, needs to be kept as close to this configuration as possible. This car truly has not been touched in more then 35 years, when it comes to what it looks like. The engine is a 1956 322 Buick Nailhead which has been in it, since it left California, custom headers, the exit through the body and the fenders, with Smithy Mufflers still on it. The interior is in very good shape, you would want to keep it in this car, because this is the original interior from when this car was built, a lot of time was spent on this interior. If you want to put it back together, it had loop carpet, dye the loop on the doors, and back of the seats. 35 years ago, it had Pipe Organ Speaker Covers in the rear, they were removed when my friend got it in the 1970's, and misplaced, they someone is making them again today. Overall, very solid car, yes it does run, I have some videos of it, but it will need gone through, in general, brakes, gaskets, etc, because it had not run for over 40 years. With that said, it will start right up, it does not blow any blue smoke, and you can drive it on a trailer, the clutch works, and the car will move good, I have just moved it around in the driveway, just no brakes. The body on the car is very sound, it is not rusty, it is in good shape. Most of the paint on it looks to be original, especially the body and roof itself. There are some primer spots on it in various areas. The gentleman I got it from, did some work on the rear fender, and some primer on it, and on the quarter panel. The rockers look good, no rust holes, or weak spots. The roof looks very good. Hood and front fenders are in good shape. The hood hinge on the drivers side, has some issues, and is sprung a little. When I got the car, a lot of the chrome was taken off the front of it, emblems etc. It does have a lot of undercoating in truck and wheel wells put on a long time ago, looks painted on, they were very generous with it. The gentleman had saved it all tagged it, and bagged everything so that was good, we just put it all back on. The undercarriage is in very good shape, no rust issues that I can see, floor boards look very good from inside of the car and under the car. The frame is in really good shape, and is original. VIN is stamped on the drivers side frame rail and matches the title. The only rust repair done to it, that I am aware of is, the rear, apron below the bumper, it is just stitched welded on there, not a real hot job, but the gentleman I got it from was in pretty bad health, and was trying his best when he did it. Other wise, the body is great. I just washed all the dust off of it and called it good. Interior is in pretty good shape, no rips in the vinyl, all the little buttons are chrome, some of them have some rust pitting on them, if you really wanted to, you could have the chrome buttons replaced, it is up to you. Rear seat is in good shape, no rips in it, it needs some of the buttons tied back down, because the inner strings have let go, and the seat is puffy looking, on the seat bottom. The headliner, is awesome, looks like new, door and quarter panels are in good shape. The black loop carpet needs to be redyed, and new carpet will need to be put in the car. Other then that, you can basically see what it needs in the interior, I would leave most of it, and clean and upgrade with original parts. There was a Sun Tach on the Dash, but it ended up missing through the years. The drivers and passenger door glass will need to be replaced as well, drivers is really cracked, and the passenger is separated. The rest of the glass in the car is in very good shape. Overall the interior needs some detail, but the really important stuff, is in very good shape for what it is, and will keep the nostalgia of the car for sure. The drivetrain seems to be in good shape as far as I can tell. The gentleman had it running, off a gas can when I got it, he put on a new water pump, and various things, plugs etc. I put on an electric fuel pump, the original Buick one is not working, but I will include it with the car. The Carb is a 1956 correct for this engine as well. The carb is missing the Choke plate, so when you start it up cold, you got to keep giving it a little gas until she warms up. Engine sounds healthy, it is not blowing any blue smoke or anything, pretty clean running actually. No signs of any oil leaks either. If it were me, if I was planning to take this car and drive it, I would take the engine out, and put new gaskets on it, head gaskets, oil pan, rear main, it would be the smart thing to do, since this car has not been on the road for 40 years. At the same time put a new clutch and throw out bearing, etc. The engine sounds good, and will idle, but sitting for so long, something might or might not happen, you never know. Radiator seems to be in good shape, no leaks in it, we have let it sit for 5-10 min just idling a few times. My next step was to do the brakes on it, but I have not gotten that far, I would love to drive it down the street for sure, and cruise it before I took the motor out and really checked everything. But it is time to let her go to the next guy who really wants to get into it. I have lots of projects right now, plus this is what I do, I find them, keep them a bit and sell them, so she needs a new home. The transmission is a Stock Ford 3 spd, with Aluminum bell housing, not sure the brand, and stock rear end. The engine has HURST motor mounts on it, not sure when they were installed on the car. The gentleman that I go the car from was also working on the steering box, his friend helped him fab it and reinstall the mounting of it. I am not sure what wheels and tires were on it when it came out of California, my friend remembers when he drove in it in the 60's, he thought it had ET Wheels like on the front all the way around it, but not sure. When he got it the ET wheels were on the front like you see it today. Not sure were the rear wheels and tires came into play during its life. Anyways, the rear cheater slicks are MH Drag slicks. I love the custom headers, I would try to keep them for sure on the car. It will need a short pipe connected to the passenger side exhaust. The Valve Covers, with Thompson Breathers are in really good shape. As for electrical, have not really checked anything out yet, I know the generator is not working currently.
